Two generations of kora players
JSngry replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous Music
When the business needs the music in order to be able to survive, things are as they should be. When it gets to be the other way 'round, something's gone wrong somewhere. And when it gets all balanced out, well, enjoy it while it lasts. -

Matthew 25:14-30 (New International Version) The Parable of the Talents 14"Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. 15To one he gave five talents[a] of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. 17So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. 18But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money. 19"After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.' 21"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' 22"The man with the two talents also came. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.' 23"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' 24"Then the man who had received the one talent came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.' 26"His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. 28" 'Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. 29For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 30And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

This is one with some good, downright frisky in fact, CF playing in a "free" bag from 1978. For that matter, it's just a damn good record period, although some people can't hang for the duration of the 31 minute title tune.

"not technically capable on his horn, not good at things like chord changes when he tried, not good at more open forms..." That is a little harsh. The guy was thrust into the spotlight too early, imo, and was still developing when that happened. He definitely could have used more seasoning before coming out, but there were some skills present, and they developed as he went along. I don't think he ever had it in him to become a "giant", but he certainly became a notch or three better than "student" musician a few years after his debut. Problem is, he made a fair amount of records and got a lot of press before he got there...

Any word yet, Bob?

Hey, I'm certainly cool with everybody making as much as they can, especially musicians. And I'm all for labor being able to extract as much for their product as they can in any given marketplace. But this marketplace for this product at this particular time...

Yeah, I never really got all the buzz about Chico back in the day. A little of it, yeah. But...

That is indeed a most sane, sensible, and satisfactory explanation, even if it is a guess. Gracias beaucoup!

Comparing it to the clip on Amazon, yes it is! But on this YT clip: claims to be the CD version, and these versions differ significantly! Plus this site http://www.lukpac.org/~handmade/patio/misc/way_beyond.html does not mention how radically different they are, which means nothing in and of itself, but they're so anal about noting every minute difference, how could they miss a major difference like this? So what, are there three different versions off Ruben now? the LP, the radically differnt CD, and one which is not so radically different? This was never a favorite Mothers album of mine, so I've not bothered, but still...

Dear Ding - I know all that much. But the version on that YouTube clip has the vocal from the Ruben version, but not the exact backing track. The CD has redone bass & drum traxks (as well as some other changes), but this backing track is not grom either of those. So the question is more accurately phrased as "from whence issueth the backing track of the version hear on the YouTune clip?"

Don't know if it's great music-making, at least in the "traditional" sense, but it sure as hell shows a keen musical/historical thought-process. It's not about knowing everything, it's about having an instinct that knows right from wrong. If you have that and stay open as time goes by, the rest should take care of itself. To posit Beyonce's wonderous ass-shaking in the context of the Ellington Cotton Club vibe (where wondrous ass-shaking appears to have not been unheard of....) is not at all inappropriate. It's actually....pretty damn smart. Even if "Harlem Air Shaft" post-dates the Cotton Club era...not and totally besides the point. Keep in mind that different people did the mashup & the video. Both are pretty sharp if you ask me. If only more of the people "making" music in the "traditional" sense displayed this much sharpness!

"Falsification"? More like imagination. Nobody claims this to be anything other than an act of imagination. No?

Prithee, sir, in what kind of a world would this happen in any quantity of which to cause concern outside the realm of the hyper-literal? Besides, besides being a faboolus, no, ultrauber-faboolus, babe, Ms. Knowles does have some serious vocal skills. She ain't no lip-sink fixitinthemix producer's test tube baby, not even.

Cool, not a RickRoll thing, and yeah, pretty fuckin cool! Among other things, what I like about the whole mashup/remix thing is that all the lameass cover bands who don't dare deviate from the record even less of an excuse that they already have...
