    DORIS DAY

Horrible arrangement, but this tune should have been played more over the years:

    Is that Tony Oliva?
  3. I had not-so-good luck with US Polydor pressings, better luck w/US Warner Brothers ones. Others have told different stories, though.

    DORIS DAY

That and the fact that she, by her own admission, made her singing career secondary to her acting & as a result made a lot of bullshit records. But...

    DORIS DAY

The lady had skills, no doubt.
  6. Listening to Paul sing those high notes, he'd have been a great lead trumpeter. At least he sings like one.
  7. Jack had the Charles Lloyd gig, remember, so maybe he had outstanding obligations to fulfill before he could leave & join Miles. That was one helluva band...to follow their captured gigs in chronological sequence is like a musical acid trip...it keeps getting more and more intense and you wonder when it's all going to just explode and dissolve, but it never does....amazing music, all of it.

What would the session have been named? Kind of Right Kind of Nice Kind of Steamy Afterglowin with the Miles Davis Quintet I'm pretty sure you people can do better than this.. Sweetest Tabloo? Nah.... Besides, I'd have liked for Miles to have recorded with her, not the other way around!

I wish that Miles would have recorded with her. That would have been all kinds of right!

  11. This game is for grownups. Go to work today, listen for "basically", and imagined yourself shitfaced by 10:30. For real!
  12. Different game...how drunk do you want to get & how soon do you want to get there?
  13. Simple - every time you hear somebody use the word "basically" in conversation, direct or overheard, take a shot. Easy as that.
  14. The way they managed to get the ball back @ the end of the 1st half and get that 3 "anyway" was, to me, a sign of one of the most macro of macro-visions I've ever witnessed in a sporting event. Of course, it helped that the Colts went conservative when they got the ball back, a safe three-and-out, but the FG, and then the onside kick that led to the touchdown that they lost on 4th and goal from the quarter before, I mean, that's just not leaving any loose ends/unfinished business mentally or spiritually, and how often do you see that to that degree? Nothing dorpped w/o being picked up. Pretty damn impressive, I think.

  18. Ok, so I'm dense...I glanced at the copyright date on the CD, saw 1993 and thought, ok, this is not all that old, and it sounds freakin' great, individual voices, nice natural feels all araound, and, just a great big NICE everywhere for everything. Then I looked again and saw that it was recorded in 1978 and was being reissued in 1993. OOPS! Well, ok, whatever. Walton himself is not a "great" voice, but he's a solid player who put together a nice, very varied program ranging from CTI-ish electric piano funk to some late-60-ish "advanced hard bop" to some mildly "freeish" spots. All in all, reflective of a guy whose background entails both AACM & the American Conservatory of Music. Not radical or anything, but plenty of integrity & no cliches where it would be easy to have some/many. Gotta love that! Plus, hey - Ari Brown, Henry Threadgill, & Jodie Christian, all in fine form. 'Nuff said.
  19. Cool, so this IS in the right forum then! 1. Everything I've Got Belongs to You 2. Invitation to the Blues 3. I Didn't Know About You 4. I Dont Want to Cry Anymore 5. Lucky Day 6. Not an overdone song in the bunch, either ("You Took Advantage Of Me" is as close as it comes), not even 50+ years later.

  21. Yes! File this one away for the next "why don't the younger guys playing in the older styles do it for you any more?" debate.
  22. The swinging stuff is good too, but the ballads have a winsomely tough vulnerability that touches me at a deeper level. Oh shit...this should have been in Recommendations.
  23. It's Arnett Cobb. That's all you really need to know.
