  1. Happy birthday! Say "hi" to The Father & The Son for we, will ya'?
  2. Hmmm....not at all a turn-on for me...
  3. I got a 45 of wounded rabbit sounds, or something like that. Found it at a thrift shop. Looks like it was sold as part of a system for hunters. Some of my favorite "oddities" are various "motivational" 45s I've picked up over the years again at thrift shops. These are by people who are not exactly..."reknowned" in their fields, and the "messages" are, shall we say, "quaint" in thier awkward content and delivery. Then there's the records made by and for some sub-Avon-esque comapny & it's field reps from the early '60. These things tout the new product lines in a way that must be heard to be appreciated, especially the "Army" line of bath items for the boys...Again found at thrift shops. And last but not least, there's a few jingle records I've picked up. Most of these are generic things like "Your Wonderful Radio" and stuff like that on LP that seem to represent some really twisted entrepreneurial spirit ("Hey - why don't we make jingles about how great radio is and then sell it to radio stations. YEAH!"), but I did find one 78 that was straight from a pressing plant (or so it seems) with 2 jingles for GE light bulbs. Again from the thrift shops.
  4. Glad you came, glad you stayed. glad you did all you did. A life based on doing and getting done, it seems. My respects to you, sir!

  6. That sucks, man. Had it happen to me twice, the last time being almost 30 years ago. I'm still anal about locking doors & windows, leaving lights on, shit like that. Not that that's bad, but the rest of the family doesn't really understand why. Maybe my son will, now that he's had his car broken into about a month ago... Cash....gotta be really clever with cash, like inside something that's inside something else that's underneath something that's in some place where nobody would even know is there. For years, I kept mine inside an envelope inside an LP copy of Money Jungle. Figured that if anybody was either hip enough or lucky enough to go there, then hey. Nowadays, I ain't got no cash, so it's not an issue... Here's hoping that the punk(s) get caught and you get your stuff back. Very glad to hear that nobody was hurt,
  7. Anthony Braxton's supposedly quite the chess player. Next time he's in your area, you oughta look him up for a game.
  8. What does that sound like? Sorry, I removed my post. Need to think about this some more. If the music keeps playing, then that means you've transcended the need for an instrument. And believe it or not, that's a very beautiful thing. Seriously.
  9. Supposedly no two snowflakes are alike. So theoretically, every snowflake should be the source of a surprise. But yeah, right, and oh well. How into that one you're likely to be at any given time depends on a lot more than the wonder of nature or something like that. "Surprise" is ultimately just one part of a lenghty equation that = "compelling experience", something that somehow hits you where you live and doesn't just pass through barely, if at all, noticed. And "comfort" can also figure in that equation as easily as "surprise", especially if the comfort is a deep, primal one. In fact, sometimes I find surprise in just how deep, how primal, the comfort that I find in certain things are. In fact, at this point, that's where most of the "surprises" I find are - not so much in music itself, but in what it stirs in me. Balliet turned a clever phrase, and in many ways it was a useful one. But it ain't the whole picture, not by a long shot.
  10. It's a Texas thing too - gigs are getting sparser, smaller, and cheaper. In the past 3 years or so, I've gone from having my "straight job" being a "safety net" in terms of income to it being by far and away my main source of income. That hurts - and deeply - in a lot of ways, but bottom line for me is that I got skills besides music and I got responsibilities to honor besides "pure art". Life's a bitch sometimes, but consider the alternative... Also going on here as well - CD stores are down to the chains. There might be a handfull of indie shops in the entire DFW area now. as opposed to 5-10 years ago, when every city had 3-4 or more such outlets. I don't even bother any more. Online shopping is now more fun, an more rewarding, than running after nothing.
  11. Real estate?

  13. That was not a good sign as to how this team's character is going to develop. Not at all. Nor was the decision to go for three in the 4th.
  14. You've not heard me say, nor will you anytime soon, if ever. anything other than that Dallas is finally heading in a better direction. There's finally focus, direction, chemistry, and some raw skills that rise above mere "potential". That however, is just the beginning. The very begiining. Many of my fellow Cowboys fans are still stuck with delusions of Manifest Destiny dancing in their head. We've always had those types, and they have always been fools of the basest order. Now is no different. Let me see where this team is in another 2-3 years, and then I might get more "confident". Right now, baby's just taken his first fall after some really...unexpectedly delightful first steps.

  16. He should save "ecstatic" for if/when they beat Indy in a few weeks. This was simply a case of an established dynasty taking care of a team that's finally turned some much needed to be turned corners but still has a loooong way to go.
  17. Some local fans were expecting this to be an evenly matched game, but they were suffering from Reality Deficit Disorder (kinda like the people who think that Bond didn't juice....). Hopefully this took care of that.
  18. Or else...
  19. If the Cowboys lose by 10 or less, I'll consider it a positive sign as to where this team is right now. Sure, we go into it 5-0, but it's a damn soft 5-0. Lots of work has been done with fine results, but even more remains to be done. This game will go a long way towards identifying what/where that is to all concerned.
  20. So I've got "Cherry" and "Goodbye" - is the other one "Sunflower"? MG One. The other is Olinga. Sunflower has the "dreaded" CTI production in full force, but for my money, it's one of, if not the tastiest/most musical example of it. Add to that the fact that everybody is playing at a very high level, and you got that somewhat rare bird - a "crossover" album chock full of top-shelf music. Olinga is the exact opposite in terms of production, but again, everybody plays outstandingly.

  23. I think his 3 CTI dates are just dandy.
  24. He's not. He really digs Bob Ralston. The Hammond's just a front - he's really a Thomas man.
