  1. Cannonball was the next Bird! Really, what is so insidious about that? The man was running a business, lost a leading asset, and didn't want for that market to vaporize. Pretty straightforward if you ask me. The irony is that once he got Benson, he never maximized his return on investment. He didn't know what to do with him once he got him. There were some good (and better) records, but Benson wanted more. So Tommy LiPuma made him a deal and everybody got what they wanted. If this was the most sordid chapter in the history of the American record business, this would truly be a wonderful world.
  2. How is this any different? It's not, really. "Jazz fans" displaying antipathy towards a vernacular of pop music for which they have a generic hostility, nothing at all new there, sadly. Or maybe not sadly. It is what it is, and what it always has been. The time for sadness is long past.
  3. Cano is there too.
  4. In Dubai, Kung Fu Panda hit a 6-Run home run: https://www.si.com/fannation/mlb/fastball/news/former-mlb-all-star-pablo-sandoval-6-run-home-run-highlights-wild-action-in-dubai-league-baseball-united?source=thewindup_newsletter&campaign=8314057
  5. Seriously. George Benson's singing, like there's a raging battle underway for the soul of the jazz public? In 2023? I think minds have long been made up, no matter how. Is this how irrelevancy eats itself into extinction?
  6. And the problem with that is....what, exactly? On the circuits where I played it, it was always done for slow dancing, cuddle time.
  7. Why don't they have a way to record orders that came in before the deadline but after the stock was out? Is that complicated or something?
  8. Taste is subjective of course, but things like pitch and time are totally quantifiable. If you seriously think that's a "bad singer" then I question both your ears and your objective judgement. Seriously. Bobby Bland shows were much like that, at least the ones with African-American audiences. Good for him! God forbid that people have both skill and ambition that find reward...
  9. Falton Stinkwell - From The Pits Of My Despair
  10. This is hardly religious, but I think it might have been the first cover of the song? Flip side of "Rainy Days & Mondays" iirc. My sister had the 45 for some reason.
  11. This makes no sense. America's Got Talent began in 2006. Benson was semi-retired by then. Maybe you're saying that he was decades ahead of his time, in which case, no, not really.
  12. Jake Sock & Flem - Pup Tent!!!
  13. Still time for new/further impressions!
  14. Louis Armstrong, Hellraiser Supreme
  15. IMO, the biggest enemy of a longer program is sameness of style. With multiple contributors like we're looking at, that's far less likely to be an issue? Also, the 7 minute max is just a suggestion, not a requirement. It would be radical to have 20 submissions and have the whole thing come in at 60 minutes LOL!!!
  16. I think we can handle more than 12 or 13, within reason of course. The retro CD capacity thing is not really relevant the days unless that's how you get your tunes to Thom Maybe set a deadline instead of a max # of submissions? Would Nov 30 be ok? One more week. Just a suggestion. But this is a celebration!!!
  17. The Ella/Louis collabs are exquisite and are also packaged in multiple manners.
  18. "What Love" is just an expansion/extrapolation of "What Is This Thing Called Love".
  19. Larry has been ill.
