  1. Wasn't sure if the Rollins was on the table for "official" discussion or not, but if it is, I'd like to say.... [B]WHOOOOOOOO BOY!!!!!
  2. Ok, the Atavistic disc reissues Dodd's classic 1946 Folkways recordings and includes 20 1954 pieces by two rural brass bands that first came out on a Folkways LP entitled "Music from The South". These brass band cuts are beyond "primitive". It's truly like hearing something from another universe. That's all I'm going to say (hell, that's all I can say, really), other than that the Dodds material is essential, the liner essay about the brass band stuff is pretty damn interesting, and that the Country Brass Band material will fuck you up big time. Other than that, you're on your own.
  3. You know, you could really make people go "WTF?" if you had that on a bumper sticker. Or not, but I like the idea anyway.
  4. I'd think that $5.99 booty would be pretty heavily worn myself, but I'm old school that way...
  5. I've heard bits of the Krupa over the years. Good writing, naturally, but the band is not as wholly bebop-oriented in flayvah as you maight hope for. Still, it's some good early Mulligan scores, and that alone is a reason to check it out in my book.
  6. This would appear to be the album in question: I'm thinking that at least $4 of that $5.99 is for the cover, cut corner or no...
  7. Oh my... Booty People -- Booty People . . . LP . . . $5.99 (Item: 36318) ABC, 1977 Condition: Very Good View Cart A great indication of the time-tested theory that the more a band tries to be "funky" in their name, the more they actually aren't. In other words, a group like the Booty People, who sound like they're going to be an all-out party, actually end up being some sort of weak fake funk outfit -- with kind of a third rate pop P-Funk groove. Not that they're totally terrible, it's just that in a list of essential funk records you should own, The Booty People would probably be somewhere right near the bottom. Tracks include "Booty People", "After The Rain", "Slappin Five", "Shoot To Kill", and "Anyway I'm Busted". (Cover has a cut corner and light wear.) http://www.dustygroove.com/warehouslp.htm#36318 Still, it seems to be worth $5.99....
  8. Yeah, the Dodds material is indeed classic, but the Brass Band stuff is the real ear-stretcher. You couldn't get a band today, no matter how "amateur", to sound like that no matter how hard they tried, which I suppose is sorta the point...
  9. No love for the Baby Dodds/Country Brass Bands side? Tell you what - spend a few hours listening to those Brass Band sides and then talk to me about "out"...
  10. I was wondering about that... Yeah, that CTI album is indeed "funny"!
  11. You're lucky that it didn't turn into the same mistake here! Seriously, as you've noticed elsewhere, I am not uninterested in the playing of Ned Goold. Here's hoping that the group and the gig(s) go off splendidly, and if you guys ever find a way to make it to Texas, let us know, ok?
  12. I dunno, Brad, that September release looks pretty good to me. The Ayler is one that I've long been curious about, will probably have deeply mixed feelings about, but will definitely buy asap. Probably his most controversial album, and in a career filled with controversy, that's saying something... I've listened to some samples of the Freda Payne (a mid-60s jazz vocal date) on AMG, and it sounds very nice. She used to sing with Basie, remember, so if all you know of her is "Band Of Gold" and such, this is anything but that. There's even a version of "Lonely Woman"! The Gato I remember from back in the day. It's just dandy, a continuation of his earlier Impulse! Latin work. So if you like Chapters 1 & 2... The only ones that I'm not too sure about are the Pharoah and the White, neither of which left much of an impression back in the day. But some of Pharoah's early 70s work sounds better to me now than it did then (although it's a question of degree...) so that one gets a "maybe" from me. We'll see how the money is then... The White turned me off mostly due to its recording quality, and it's semi-commercial trimmings. But it's got Prince Lasha & Cecil McBee, and White himself is a fine plyer, so again, we'll see how the money is in September. Your mileage will vary, of course, and Ayler is inevitably somebody for whom the mileage varies considerably, but for those who enjoy good jazz vocals with nice arrangements, the Freda Payne side will probably come as a most pleasant surprise. The one in the current series that completely snuck up on me is the Sittin' In thing. Paul Gonsalves? In a Granz mid-50s jam setting? Who knew? I'll be getting that one shortly, I guaranteee!
