Family sticks together!

Dude, you oughta just say "Screw it" to the notion of permanent residency and hook up with Clem on his nomadic peregrinations. The two of you would cut a swath across this great land of ours the likes of which have not been seen since Sonny Stitts left the planet. Do it now, while you're young, energetic, and still capable of consuming mass quantities. I'm kidding, but I'm not, if you know what I mean.

That would be those listed as by the Castle Orchestra or some such, right? I've been looking in vain for any kind of retail compilation of that stuff for years now. Any suggestions other than going the file-sharing route? FWIW, I included a 1919 Reese cut ("On Patrol In No Man's Land") on my BFT. Reactions were decidedly mixed, which I expected. It came from the Memphis Archives release, which I was able to find online at a good price a few years ago. The booklet alon is worth the cost of admission. However, I wonder about the quality of the transfers, as there's a Real Audio file of the same cut on the net (http://www.redhotjazz.com/hellfighters.html ) that is significantly more vivid in sound and detail, so I'm wondering just how different the sound of the IAJC collection of this material is, and in what ways.

Up. Are there no New Englanders, at least, familiar w/Yavani? This is some good stuff. It needs to be heard!

You mean the other way around, right? Or were you kidding? I'm procrastinating leaving for work and am in a transitional state of reality percepttion right now, and can't really tell for sure... This wasn't "The Glenn Miller Story", btw this was the Miller Army Air Force Band. An pretty darn interesting outfit at times, if only at times... But yeah, I knew that. Somewhere here (I think it's here), there's a thread I started (and got some great info from) about the origins of "Moon Beams", including the positing the possibility that Gil might have heard this seeminigly obscure sonf while in tha Army, on a Miller AAFB broadcast. Seems that Margaret Whiting had recorded it as well, iirc. Still the highlight of the collection for me, that and "Godchild", but like I said, the others are slowly but surely growing on me. Why it's taking so long, I'll probably have to wait until later to post about, becuase right now, I gotta run.

Yep. Good luck, though. From what I understand, it's a bit of a "cult classic".

Well now, talk about ambitious, and I go to "Moon Dreams". The ending always stood out to/fascinated me, but while rummaging through my parent's old RCA box of the Glen Miller AAFB stuff a few years ago, I was shocked/delighted to find a version of "Moon Dreams", a vocal by Johnny Desmond (and a great one at that). Hearing that song as a "song" and then comparing it to Gil's reworking of it (it's in a lower key, for one thing, and the harmonies are, not surprisingly significantly more altered) was a real eye/ear-opener.

We ain't heavyweights, we're just big-boned. Yeah, that first Calliman is some cool shit, but IAPETUS is another thing entirely. Not at all like that first one. Actually, there's nothing else quite like it by anybody, ever, not really. But Chuck's points are also well-taken. CRANKIN' for instance, could have been a much better record than it was with some better preparation and supervison. And that's not the only example. Still, it's definitely a catalog not without items of interest. Chuck disagrees with me on this, I believe, but what with us both being big-boned and all, we WILL survive.

A belated but nonetheless enthusiastic congratulations! -
Quoth the Bastarded Ones ( http://www.dustygroove.com/jazzcd2.htm#378606 ): Jumpin R&B work from the mighty Griffin Brothers -- one of the best set's we've ever seen to collect their key early singles for Dot! At the time, the group were one of the hottest things going on the DC scene -- working in a rough, post-swing style that had plenty of jazz in the mix -- but which was also done in a harder, heavier R&B mode overall. Vocalists Margie Day and Tommy Brown sing with the group on a number of these tunes -- but even the instrumental ones stand out nicely, thanks to some searing sax work and a really tightly vamping rhythm section. Titles include "Griff's Boogie", "Little Red Rooster", "Hot Pepper", "I'll Get A Deal", "House Near The Railroad Track", "Ace In The Hole", "Weepin & Cryin", "One Steady Baby", "The Clock Song", "Tra La La", "Sadie Green", and "Blues With A Beat". 23 tracks in all! Checked out the AMG samples, and they all sound freakin' GREAT, especially the one called "The Teaser", which iall by itself s gonna make me order this puppy tomorrow. Y'all GOTTA check out this tenor player! Oh HELL yeah! Never heard of these guys myself, but I've got a lot to learn. Any of our many dwwp R&B fans here got some detail about these guys. I did find this on the web: http://home.earthlink.net/~jaymar41/combotwo.html but any thing additional and/or more detailed would certainly be welcome.

Which alto player sounded the most like Bird?
JSngry replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Lots of people sounded like parts of Bird, but nobody sounded like the whole thing. -
Your list does not include Hadley Calliman's IAPETUS, so I assume that you have not yet come across it. You need to!

Still working on this one after all these years. Other than the Gil charts, I tend to respect it and appreciate it more than love it. But the love grows every year, if only slightly, so I keep listening. Now as for the black/white thing mentioned by Chuck, that is indeed a major and meaty point for consideration.

Lawmaker Seeks to End Sexy Cheerleading

Believe me, it's very common, and so is the name of the girl being on the ass. -
Face it dude, we're OLD now!

Under noraml circumstances, this is Universal Musician Sign Language to tell the sound technician that one is not able to hear one's self the way that oine would like to, and could you, misterormissus soundperson, please remedy the situation by brining me up in the monitor mix. Please. This is inevitably followed by an intricate pantomime on the part of the sound technician in which the brow is furrowed, furious knob turning/slider adjustments appear to be made, a series yearning and sincere looks are thrown to the bandstand, and everything stays exactly like it was.

Word. Yeah, like you guys would run away if the opportunity presented itself. Puh-LEE-se!

On #10, I'd just like to add that although the organist is swell, the guitarist is even more sweller.
