  1. Wow. That definitely sounds like Larry. I think we have a winner. COOL! Yes to all!
  2. Please, sir, this is a blinding reeferend'em with globbal implacations. I would respectfully ask you to take the question seriously.
  3. Please, can we settle this once and for all?

I dunno, man, the stuff w/Odean starts strong but kinda tapers off over the years, but the stuff w/Billy Harper hits MIGHTY hard. Bad choice of phrase in the context of this thread, perhaps, but nevertheless...

    My assumption as well.

Maren, we all know you're the real "voice of reason" on this board!
  7. "Glad" to hear that it was apparently internal problems and not enforced legal intimidation that is the problem. those estate lawyers got pretty heavy-handed there for a while from what I hear. In a way, I can understand their position, but still... Hope the organization resurfaces eventually. I was never organized enough to participate, but through "the kindness of strangers" was able to get a taste of some of their output. Quite worthy efforts, I think, and nothing that would prevent purchasing legitimate issues of the same material should same ever come about. In fact, I feel much better about this sort of thing than the various "gray market" labels that have offered some of the same stuff over the years.
  8. If you decide to kee the shrinkwrap on for whatever reason (not a good idea at all, imo), do it in such a way that the "stress" created by it is dissipated, which usually means splitting the top and/or seams way, WAY back. More trouble than it's worth, really. The stuff is pretty much harmless as long as it stays sealed, but once it's opened, the pressure is unevely distributed, and, yes, it will cause warpage.
  9. Agreed, but this is from a time when he had the benefit of a very active patronage of a label on an ongoing basis. Seems that Lion had an "open door" policy for him, more or less.
  10. Wow, I had only listened to the first track, but the suggestion that it's LArry young made me go back and listen to the second one. Sure sounds like Grant & Larry on that one... Hell, it's probably Dick Hyman.
  11. Yeah, that's the period. Seems odd in a way, one stretch of frequent activity, a big gap, and then another stretch of frequent activity. Wondering if this was a time of "chilling out" for Andrew.

Qouth Charlie, just now: "Dad, I've already been to the ninjatune website." These kids today, I tell ya.... (but there's other sites linked here he's NOT been to, so hey...)
  13. Well, here's the thing about that: The only reason people come to this club is to hear good live music. It ain't for the ambiance, let me tell you. We had people begging us to keep playing when we were taking breaks, begging us for encores, etc. They want to dance and that's why they come. Half the place was filled with people who came just to see us. And the manager knows it. The management also decided that I can't play music during the breaks... they play the music now. I had lots people complaining to me, "Why aren't you playing the dance music?" because I play disco/funk stuff inbetween to keep people dancing. I said, "Go complain to the manager. It's his call." We're a frickin' R&B, soul band and people came out to see us and the house jukebox was playing stupid Pat Benatar and country tunes. Makes a lot of sense. You know how many clubs go under because they fuck up a good thing? Lots. Changing the break music, to the clientele's obvious displeasure, is a BIG "red flag" AFAIC. This sounds like a classic case of fixing what ain't broke. Look - club owners might be scum, but they ain't dumb, at least when it comes to being bastards. If a rival room gets wind of "dissatisfaction" and even thinks they smell blood, they'll make a move to pull people away, and probably succeed to one degree or another. NEt result - the room you're working at still does good enough business, but not at the level it once did. This equal decreased gross, which will translate to "cost-cutting", which from the sound of it means a bigger dig trying to get up in y'alls ass (not that there's anything WRONG with that...) If there are options to take the "old vibe" to another venue, I'd sure as hell do so, and ASAP. Staying afloat more often than not is nothing more than a matter of you turning the corner before the corner turns you. Bust a move, brother.
  14. Does anybody have any info as to why there was an 11 month gap in Andrew's BN recording schedule? Seems unusual, to say the least.

Thanks for that link, John. I'll hip Charlie to it, and see what he pulls up. I kinda like having my kid hip me to cool stuff. Makes us both feel good.
  17. Hey, two tunes is enough to merit a hype, especially on a soundtrack album. This IS the Record Business we're talking about, ya' know?
  18. Hey, JazzKat - don't let the razzing bug you. Mangione's sort of an ongoing joke these days (even on King of the Hill!) but anybody who knows thier stuff will recognize that Mangione had a respectable track record prior to his commercial success. And anybody who's ever been there as a young player knows the importance that an experience such as yours has to fanning the flames of the desire to keep playing and to get better. Eight years old, eh? That must've been a HUGE thrill! LOVE the McCoy story, Marcello! Mike - YOU LUCKY DOG! to all!
  19. That's what I was thinking... But geez, Jimmy was a star on Verve in 1965, you'd think that Verve would hype his appearance. Maybe it's that Jimmy Smith soundalike guy that Chuck was talking about in another thread? The plot does indeed thicken!
  20. I can see how some might view the CHAINED session as "wandering", but it didn't stike me that we at all. "Roaming", yeah, but not "wandering. The difference for me is that I hear a consistent attention to thematic exploration throught the pieces. No loss of focus, just a lot of looking at the same idea from a lot of different ways in the course of a performance. And Teddy Robinson's rapport w/Hill on these cuts is damn near telepathic. What a discovery!

Thanks, John. I can go there sometimes, actually. My son is a BIG fan of Jaga Jazzist, and what I've heard of them has not been unattracitve.
  22. I heard a bit of him on a Marain McPartland show (admittedly not always the best showcase for a young player, pretty bare-bones format), and he sounded more or less "competent" if not particularly "deep". Again, in the realm of "entertainment", this is all it takes (that and being able to project a "pesonality", which is not as easy a feat as it may seem), so take that for what it's worth.
  23. I'd also think that Byrd's early mid-70s success in R&B circles would have at least heightend Smoke's awareness of Byrd. Can't overlook a possible James Jamerson link either. Wasn't Jamerson an active jazz player before he started doing the Motown thing? Played w/Yusef Lateef for a bit, didn't he?
  24. Not really familiar with his pianism, but his singing that I've heard so far has really irked me. As Connick is to Sinatra, this guy seems to be to Connick. But then again, as "entertainment", such considerations don't always apply, at least in the moment of being entertained. The guy definitely seems to have a lot of poise, so I'm sure it'll be a "good show", which in the realm of entertainment is the object of the game, after all. Report back, please!
  25. From the anecdotal evidence I've heard, I'd say that KD came to the test desiring to flunk!
