Oh, btw, that site also has a bulletin board. Might try there too. Then again, maybe you already know about all this, in which case, never mind. l)

Just a guess- According to this site http://microgroove.jp/mercury/MGE26006.shtml the album was recorded for Mercury in 1960, but not released until about 1965, which would've been right about the time that Buddy's then-new big band was creating a stir. So it's possible that the album might have been "lost in the shuffle" and never recieved the the public attention that it might have otherwise. Fast forward a few decades, and now Mercury is part of the vast Universal/Vivendi holdings. They're a group whose reissue choices have been questioned by many people over the years. It's possible that they don't even know about this album, or that if they do, they don't think there's a market for it. The above-mentioned site makes it sound none too shabby. Irving “Markie” Markowitz (tp), Willie Dennis (tb), Seldon Powell (ts), Mike Mainieri (vib), Dave McKenna (p), Earl May (b), Buddy Rich (ds). Recorded at Fine Recording Studios, New York City on April 7 & 8, 1960. Produced by Jack Tracy. Supervised by Hal Mooney. Arranged by Ernie Wilkins. SIDE-A Brainwashed (E. Wilkins - B. Rich) 5:00 A Swinging Serenade (E. Wilkins) 4:05 Big Leg Mary (E. Wilkins - B. Rich) 5:45 Straight, No Chaser (J. Adderley T. Monk) 4:20 SIDE-B Bloddy Mary (E. Wilkins) 6:30 A Night In Tunisia (J. “Dizzy” Gillespie - F. Paparelli) 6:05 Miss Bessie's Cookin' (E. Wilkins - B. Rich) 5:15 In my humble opinion, this LP surely is Buddy Rich's best album among his Mercury releases (which includes drum battles against Max Roach, moody bigband featuring his own voice, ordinary bigband session with studio musicians). This is probably because the LP was based on his own road band at the time. Hard-driving, swingy and unique. Another highlight of this LP is the inclusion of young Mike Mainiere on vibraphone, who plays very nice. As to how to raise Verve's consciousness about the existence/worth of this album, good luck. They used to have a bulletin board, but no more. Send e-mails and keep preaching to the grass roots is the only advice I can offer.

Kari, exactly what is meant by the term "nu-jazz"? I'm interested!
-
Vesala & Juhani Aaltonen are the only two names I'm readily familiar with. Both are players who have consistently delivered compelling music. Recommendations of other players' work of such a calibre are certainly welcome!

Ok, here it is: Max Roach has spent a great portion of his adult life being a loathsome human being. Beating Abbey Lincoln is only a part of it, if you want to know the truth. However, the rest of his adult life has been spent making powerful music, and creating a public persona that is an inspiration for many of us who seek to maintain a shred of dignity while making music that goes against the commercial pressures, not just of the industry, but of society as a whole. Now, do you think that I'm so stupid as to think that the second excuses the first? Or that the the first invalidates the second? Or that to acknowledge the reality of the private life lessens the inspiration created by the public one? Trust me, I'm not. I'm also not so perpetually shook up over the conflict between the two realities that I have to qualify every discussion of Max Roach with one sort of disclaimer or another. You meet a lot of imperfect people in life, people whose nastiness and beauty co-exists in frighteningly large amounts, and in frighteningly equal measures. You kearn to deal with it. To negate either the good or the bad is dishonest. But you choose which to react to under any given circumstance. And as long as the discussion is on the "public" Max Roach, I show the love, because that is what motivates the love. If we were to discuss his loathsome personal habits (and, really, why would we on an ongoing basis, unless we were involved in them ourselves?), then that's another matter entirely. Life is love, and love ain't no fairy tale.

OFF THE FUCKIN' METER, DOG!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not important. It's just fun (or more accurately, "fun") for a quick minute. Then, life goes on.
-
Indeed. I'm outta this lovefest.

Oh REALLY? Hmmmmm... Indeed it does, and that certainly was one of them. But as a rule, when I check in there, I'm usually in and out in less than five minutes, unless there's a good topic going in the Musician's Forum (which is for me the most interesting place there. Lots of "newbie" players looking for advice, and not of the "Tell me I'm ok! Don't SCARE me!" type). Again, purely personal preference, which in either case, I see no need to defend or belittle. Again, I suggested no such thing. That is entirely your interpretation, and it is totally wrong. What I suggested is that those wanting a less "intense" atmosphere would probably find AAJ more to their liking. And frankly, your characterizations of the atmosphere at AAJ seems to suggest that my assessment is correct. Well, if you interpret it the way you do, yes, it does. But if I choose to interpret the sun as a curse because it causes skin cancer, well, whose fault it that? Mine, or the sun's for not being what I think it should be? Should I expect the sun to change, or should I just learn what it is and deal with it, even if it means staying inside during the day? A poor analogy, to be sure, and not to compare Organissimo to the sun or anything like that, but still, the point remains - not everything is going to be a good fit for everybody, and those who don't find a good fit in Place A would be better served by looking for said good fit elsewhere, rather than bitching and moaning about how Place A won't come to a grinding halt and remodel itself in their image. Life's too short, ya' know? And as glorious as the Whiny Adolescent Years are in some aspects, they're really not well-suited for carrying out adult affairs in the adult world. Although, the last few years have got me reconsidering that one... I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, but not for what was said. If you choose to continue misinterpreting the whole thing, that is, of course, your perogative.

Exactly.

Cool! Now start doing it!
-
How ANYBODY could keep up with that drummer is beyond me...
-
So what are you going to do, run away, or stick around and find out if they really are? The choice is entirely your own. But trust me, I'm a pussycat. REALLY!

That's a question that only you can answer.

Let me put it another way and see if this deflects the erroneous assupmptions... Both boards have a personality of thier own. That personality has not been pre-ordained by anybody or anything. It is the result of people naturally gravitating to communities in which they feel more comfortable. My comments about the nature of each were based on what I think is an objective analysis of each board's current "personality". No value judgements were implied, period. Also, the personalities of boards can change over time. If Organissimo ever gets tot eh point where there's nothing interesting to me personally on an ongoing basis, I'll look for someplace where there is. As do all members of all boards. But as of right now, the guidelines I suggested are based on what this place is now. If it's to your likeing, PLEASE stay and contribute. If ti's not, no hard feelings, hope you find someplace that offers you what you want. Now, if any of these comments "offend" or "put off" Bev or anybody else, I'm sorry that the offense occured. But I stick by what I said, and the spirit which it was intended. I accept responsibility only for what I say and how I intend for it to be taken. Anybody who takes offense by reason of assuming/projecting a different intent and/or meaning, one entirely of their own doing, and expects an apology and/or reconsideration is gonna be s.o.l. Add THAT to the list!

You might enjoy Lil Green's version of "Romance In The Dark" at least as much as those you've already heard. Or not. But it's worth a shot!
-
Bev, you know I dig you, but really, that last response of yours is reading/projecting an attitude into what I said that does not exist. Spin it anyway you want, through whatever lens you want, but I promise you, your "class resentment", or whatever Anglo-baggage you've got going on whenever you rage against assumed superiority, is being put to use on a target that, in this case, is all in your mind. Like I said, I dig you, and still do, but really, man, you're way off base here.

No shit.

If nominated, I will not run. If elected, I will not serve. I will, however, accept any and all contributions, no questions asked, no refunds given. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS!

If you want to go cheap and wait for the new car (and if your car has a cassette player), you can always get a portable player, a car kit (a faux-cassette that plugs from the portable's headphone jack into the tape player and transmits the CD signal accordingly), and a power adapter. Not necessarily "hi-fi", but it gets the job done well enough, and for under $100, easily.

Didn't catch any advance notice of this. Probably my fault, don't look at the papers much anymore. But nothing on KNTU that I heard (no surprise, really...). I'm gigging tonight, but could/would have made last night's show if I had known in advance. Oh well... Interesting to see that he's carrying on the "family band" thing that his father had going. Beautiful. Moffett's last CD is pretty damn good.

Bummer. Legal intimidation, perhaps? -
Sure wish I had a counter top right now...

Well, he's been dead for a few years now, and funerals are just SO expensive...
