I like Garbarek quite a bit actually. Very soulful player, if one can expand one's concept of "soul" beyond certain pre-programmed sociological perceptions of what it "is".
Finally saw the film a few years ago, and in more tahn a few spots, the soundtrack sounded like there had been studio players none to skillfully dubbed over Ellington's own players. There were two simulataneous layers of sound - that of the Ellingtonians, and that of the studio players. Different recording sounds for each. The results were disorienting, to put it mildly.
The film itself was ok, nothing special.
My daughter is into that stuff (she calls it "J-Rock", is there a difference? Dir en grey is her favotrite...), and, yeah, I hear ya'...
Then again, I'm an old fart, so waht am I supposed to think about it?
