  1. Frankie Frisch I could believe.
  2. To shit eighth notes?
  3. Which one married the widow Kovacks?
  4. Who IS Jimmy Clanton's coroner, anyway?
  5. Just two? We have an entire BAND that's formed their own agency and does exactly that. Plus, they sucker bands into signing "exclusive representation" contracts. Then they advertise them in promo materials and web sites. THEN, when a prospective client for these other groups call, they hear that the group they called about is already booked or otherwise unavbailable, and would they be interested in the group that owns the agency? Now, if it turns out that the client is not really deep-pocketed or otherwise unlucrative, the client recieves a call back in a few days that the group they originally asked about has suddenly come available, and AT A REDUCED PRICE! To make matters worse, each member of the core band/agency has satellite bands that all have the same book and go out under the same name. So on any given night, there are five bands working under the same name, playing the same book, with all the net going back into the core group's agency. That's just smart business (and hardly unprecedented), but the signing of other bands to exclusive representation contracts and then screwing them like that is plain ol' slimy, if not exactly unprecedented. There's at least four other musician/agencies in this town who play the "call for them/end up booking me" game, but none have gone so far as to play the exclusive representation game. Yet. A big reason why my commercial work is down is because I was working with bands that didn't hook up with these sharks. The strangulation of the work flow took its toll, and most of these bands gave up. I've been called a few times to work for these fuckers, and have always been booked elsewhere. One time, they offered me double what I was already making to cancel out of a gig at the very last minute. They were obviously (and I DO mean obviously...) trying to fuck with the "competition". This would have meant a $550 check, but I refused. just on principle. I don't back out of a previous commitment like that. Especially not on the day of the gig. Now, I've been "branded" as a wildcard of some sort, somebody who won't go along with the program and all that, and you know what that means - I'm now a sorry no-playing motherfucker who's unreliable and unprofessional. Yep, that's me! Guess that's why they offered me double to bust up that other band's gig... Oh well!
  6. Who's this Johnny Hartzfield, and did he record?
  7. I'll buy it just for the title!
  8. Wow... I bought an original pressing of this new in a cutout bin for 49 cents back in 1972 or so. It's a compilation of cuts on other albums, I think. Good stuff, though. On my cutout copy, the front cover was pasted on upside down. Does that make it more, or less, valuable. Or is it just more or less valuable?
  9. It is in one's notness that one finds one's areness. And it is in Gunsmoke that one finds James Arness. Drink responsibly, drive friendly, kiss the ladies, make them cry, and above all, brake for small animals. And fuck Johnny Maestro. The worst that could happen indeed! All has NOT been forgiven.
  10. I can think of lots of bookers and agents who would be worth a shot. Or two. Or threee. Ot how many ever it takes to get a clean hit.
  11. Yep. If you want a version w/an easily gras[ed melody for arrangement purposes, the LockGriff is good. But otherwise, the man's done called it.
  12. Lou Christie can kick Jimmy Clanton's ass with both feet tied behind his back. And Johnny Maestro, great as he was the first time around, irretrievably fell onto my shitlist with that abomination "The Worst That Could Happen". I can only hope that the name of the band was a cynical joke about being able to sell the Brooklyn Bridge. I expel a wamly bubbling puddle of stomach slime on the floor just thinking about it. Who's Gary? We're ALL Gary!
  13. Creepy indeed.
  14. Nice to have you aboard.
  15. Positional morality.
  16. If you want to incorporate jazz into "A Raisin in the Sun" , there's always tha Hughes/Mingus collaboration that uses the poem where the line originated (although way before this project, I think). I enjoyed my student teaching. It made me realize that teaching was not the career of my choice. But I did enjoy it.

  18. No prob. Life's a LOT more fun that way.
  19. METAMORPHOSIS is some heavy shit. Atilla Zollar, Richard Davis, & Joe Chambers on a nicely probing semi-free/semi-strutured date. Coulda been on Blue Note. SHOULD have been on Blue Note, given the main emphasis of Prestige at that time, which was not this kind of music...
  20. No, it's not just you. So, is it just us? Seriously, it's heartening to hear that that whole thing is beginning to seep its way out of its own little world and infiltrate others' little worlds. It should, and I've been hoping that it will. There's much meat there, even if not all the records bring it fully to the table.
  21. This guy need to be locked up once and for all. Seems like he kills people 3 or 4 people every year, if my e-mail is any indication...
  22. Yeah, Porter's cool. He makes his points fit the actual music, not the other way around. Gotta love that. And this Prez book is a dandy. Might, MIGHT, be a little too "technical" for the most analyticphobic reader, but lord knows it's on time and tells the truth about Lester Young's MUSIC. A little imagination and a bit of listening along is all it takes for the non-techinc reader to figure out waht he's talking about. Well worth the effort, I'd think.
  23. Could you favor us with a rendition?
  24. Is it refering to the students? If so, which ones? And in what way? I'm not Bobby Bland, but I smell trouble!
