  1. Do/did the MPB4 cop to being influenced by the Hi-Los in their harmonies? I sure hear it, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the influence was made.

I have a few of these, notably the excellent CORAL ROCK, on Prestige LPs, and although the production quality is often "rough", the music is full of vim, vigah, and vitaliky. I'll be looking forward to these! BTW - the Mingus stuff made it to a Prestige 24000 thing that I never picked up. It's from his "sedated" period, and didn't do too much for me then. But I'd love to have it now...

What about the two Mingus albums w/the Bobby Jones etc. lineup?
  4. I can relate to that...
  5. Do you collect Schwann catalogs too? When I was at NTSU and decided to go "up a notch" when it came to collecting, finding all the old Schwanns in the college library was a godsend.
  6. FWIW, the first few times I heard "SNC" were in numerous "advanced" jam sessions during my freshman year of college. I wasn't playing, these guys were way out of my league at the time, I was just listening and soaking it all in. Didn't even know what it was until I asked somebody. Had only heard "some" Monk, and definitely not that tune. Had definitely heard of it though. It took me about a week to realize that the head was actually in 4/4!
  7. Thanks!
  8. Found a rummage sale that had a bunch of Brazillian (as in actually FROM Brazil) LPs for sale @ $3 per, and I bought all that the cash in my wallet would allow for. I'm in no way knowledgeable about the music other than a general appreciation and an awareness of who the "names" are, and selected accordingly. I'd very much appreciate some informed commentary from those with a deeper knowledge than mine as to exactly what it is I bought - how these albums rate in the artist's overall output, how "rare" they may or may not be, if they've had American release, are any of them "important" artisticlly, etc. Ecerything's in Portugese, so liner notes ain't gonna help. Here's what I got: Gal Costa - QUARELADO BRASIL (Phillips) - seems to be a collection of Ary Barroso songs Gal Costa - PROFANA (RCA) - pretty kinky cover Edu Lobo/Chico Buaroque (Som Livre) - O GRANDE CIRCO MISTICO = seems to be an "all-star" affair Egberto Gismonti - FANTASIA (EMI)Caymmi - SETENTA ANOS (can't figure out what label) - a 2LP set. Toninho Horta Y Orchesra Fantasma - TERRA DOS PASSABOS (EMI) - only know the name. really cool packaging- Toquinho - CASA DE BRINQUEDOS (Ariola) - again, no idea. MPB4 - ADIMINHA O QUE E(Ariola) - never heard of these guys, but there's something about the way they look that says "jazzy", so hey. MPB4 - A ARTE DE (Fontana) - see above. 2 LP set. "Represenative", I'm guessing/hoping Hermeto Pascoal - & GRUPO (Som Dagente) - Hermeto I know about. Love him. Hermeto (again) - AO VIVO (Brazillian(?) Atlantic) - Live at Montreux. HAD to get this one! So like I said, any educated commentary (musical or otherwise) on this group of albums would be much appreciated. TIA!
  9. Les MCann's (vocal) version of "Please Send Me Someone To Love" is my favorite other than Mayfield's own.
  10. I best enjoyed Watts when he played alto w/Buddy Rich's band. It seemed like a good fit.
  11. Based on a true story, I guess. Haven't laughed this hard in years. BENTONVILLE, ARK (AP) -- Some Walmart customers soon will be able to sample a new discount item: Walmart's own brand of wine. The world's largest retail chain is teaming up with E&J Gallo Winery of Modesto, California, to produce the spirits at an affordable price, in the $2-5 range. While wine connoisseurs may not be inclined to throw a bottle of Walmart brand wine into their shopping carts, there is a market for cheap wine, said Kathy Micken, professor of marketing at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I. She said: "The right name is important." So, here we go: The top 12 suggested names for Walmart Wine: 12. Chateau Traileur Parc 11. White Trashfindel 10. Big Red Gulp 9. Grape Expectations 8. Domaine Wal-Mart "Merde du Pays" 7. NASCARbernet 6. Chef Boyardeaux 5. Peanut Noir 4. Chateau des Moines 3. I Can't Believe It's Not Vinegar! 2. World Championship Riesling And the number 1 name for Wal-Mart Wine ... 1. Nasti Spumante
  12. Best wishes, Ron!
  13. How do you suppose one would go about dancing The Gigi?
  14. POWER SWITCH????? Why in the year 2004, all homes will run on "always on" nucular energy! It's cheap, plentiful, and safe.
  15. That's to play racing games. Those guys really COULD see the future!
  16. Ah, I see. Check him out w/Mongo.
  17. FWIW, Woody openly admitted during his lifetime that his sojurn to the West Coast was marked by serious addiction problems. Joe, well... Make of that what you will as it pertains to any "raggedness" on this album. Love the Rhodes myself. Texture, flavor, a multi-octave kalimba almost, what's NOT to love when it's played well in the right context?
  18. I'm on a case-by-case basis with Laws myself, but when he connects, he does so strongly. Impeccable technique always, but only sometimes does he bring the music with it. But he can (or could, anyway), no doubt...
  19. So that's Jack? I'd never have guessed. Maybe I should listen again.
  20. Who was Hal Schaefer?
  21. Although I really dig Dean as an entertainer (LOVED his variety show as a kid), and am aware of his various musical goodies over the years, you have to hear this album to believe how dull it is. The talent is totally wasted. They're credited in pretty big type on the back cover, but it could be any scmuck doing what gets done here. Red Mitchell playing two-beat on BALLADS for crissakes, never walking, never filling, never doing nothing except roots and fifths. One song after another. They say that money talks and bullshit walks, but there's no walking on THIS record. THAT is bullshit my friends, and I'm calling this song just exactly what it is. Rock steady, baby.
  22. Alton Brown is the Bill Nye of food. And howzabout Mark Summers, whom I remember as host of Double Dare (along with the lovely Robin!), turning up now on Unwrapped? But neither one of them stir my imagination the way that Rachael Ray does.
  23. ...that includes Ken Lane & Irv Cottler (yawn) and Barney Kessell & Red Mitchell. It's called DREAM WITH DEAN, on Reprise, and I found it for $2.50 over the weekend. Is it good? Well, no. Short runthroughs of some old warhorses (along with the original version of "Everybody Loves Somebody", which is a good tune to blow on, believe it or not), all at the same tempo with basically the same arrangement. Dino's got a nice, full, rich voice, but is pretty much clueless about what to do with it in terms of phrasing and enunciation. And Kessell sounds like he has his watch face turned around so he can see it while he plays, if you know what I mean. The whole thing's not so much bad as it is useless. So why is this album going to be a prized item in my collection? Simple - whenever some poor naive soul wonders why so many jazz musicians are bitter, or self-destructive, or leave the country, or whatever, I'm going to put on this record and say, "You hear that fat-toned bass player playing roots and fifths on 1 # 3 and very little else the entire album? That's RED FUCKING MITCHELL, AND HE PROBABLY MADE MORE FOR THIS ONE THREE HOUR CRAP SESSION THAN HE DID ALL MONTH PLAYING JAZZ!!!" If they still don't get it, I will have every right to kill them and drink their blood while it's still warm. Oh yes I will.
