  1. I think I'm becoming priggishly conservative in my standards, increasingly less tolerance for halfassedness of any sort, but all the while becoming downright slutty in WHAT I will listen to. Life's too short to listen to slack, but it's also too short to not listen to good stuff regardless of origin. Although...I anticipate that there will come a time when life will be too short for "listening" at all. It will all be one state of consciousness and it will have neither beginning nor end. "Music" will be something for and from the previously inhabited finite space and time, and "jazz" will be some sliver of some sliver of some sliver. But until then...
  2. Did they sample and slow "Boogie Woogie Waltz" for the drum beat?
  3. I'm not at all convinced of that. Yesterday's New Quintet, THAT'S intentional (and delightfully so). This is... They very consciously tied their outcome to a very specific piece of music. Aggressive marketing mindset at work here in service of a clearly, imo, inferiorly executed experiment. How about just releasing it in the wild and leave Interstellar Space out of it? Stand on your own two feet, digital they may be.
  4. I have no idea and don't really care, to be honest. It's not a contest! I can hear it because I liked it (a lot) from the very first listening and kept digging into it over the years. I did the work because I liked the work, simple as that! If you don't like something at all, then ok. Let it be. No crime in that. But that's you not liking it, nothing more. Own your own tastes, right? But for something to present itself as somehow "scientific" when it's clearly ignorant of the subject... how an I supposed to trust "them"? Impossible. The honest thing would be to keep that initial failure of the AI to yourself and keep practicing until you got it right. Because... that's kinda the way music works.

Still not a Beatles song. History matters, right?
  7. You would think that it would be a lot better. Interstellar space is very "mathematical" music, very clearly and cleanly. My hunch is that the programmers had no grasp of the actual music and did this as a "stunt" thinking that nobody could tell the difference. Well, the joke is on them

Stop it. You have better things to do, I hope
  9. That AI take on Interstellar Space is just silly. It sounds more like a tape being played in reverse than it does a tenor. And there is no architecture. None. I'll not blame the program, I'll blame the programmers.

Nope. But the outrage has been formally recognized.

We have just had a formal complaint lodged against the pedophilic insinuations from four months ago.
  12. Not really interested here either.
  13. Meet the new Dick Tracy villain - Type Face.
  14. All I want is zone. I don't care how it gets there. Just get there. Without zone, it's just replaceable labor with a mechanical end.
  15. Johnny Mathis has been severely undervalued by history. Only a very little bit of that is understandable, and even less of it is excusable, imo.
  16. Glenn Osser. Seems to have been the de facto Mathis guy in those days. Totally competent, but maybe teetering just a teensy bit towards a lack of real personality. But jeez, on something like that, Mathis is so intense it's personality enough for the whole song. All the arrangement has to do is to, above all, not suck and then just keep the runway lit. Mission accomplished then.
  17. This much weight is more befitting death than breakup ..
  18. I think this would work just as well with bongos. Or you know, if you're going to have a drunken Polynesian orgy, get all the ladies in on it:

  20. I only know Corey Wilkes from a few records, but on those records, he's in venerable company and certainly justifies his presence. But there's more to it than that, I take it?
