  2. Jack Teagarden and Randy Crawford on that Leo Underhill airshot...
  3. I would confidently say "Jacob WHO???" If...
  4. The major shortcoming of the doc is that the talking heads are never identified(!), but there's a lady DJ who talks about showing up cold as a 22 year old jazz fan who loved the station asking for an on air gig, getting it, immediately beginning to play Don Cherry etc. records, getting a LOT of mail (pro and con), and not once being talked to about it. Don Cherry on American commercial AM radio out of a barge in Newport, Kentucky. Make America THAT kind of great again!!!
  5. https://larryshudra.wordpress.com/2011/03/06/wnop-the-jazz-ark-radio-free-newport/ Dig the air shots! The jingles! The real commercials! The Jazz!!! Commercial jazz radio is all but extinct, never mind commercial AM jazz radio. But like the neighborhood bars, it was once real, once common, and a totally different experience and way of experiencing this music and this life. Apparently they did this from 1963-2000, at which point they became an outlet for the local Catholic Diocese. My God would prefer the jazz, but that's just me. There's been a documentary of sorts made, and it's on this new BeBop streaming network. https://filmfreeway.com/radiofreenewport Every town should have one.
  6. And an interesting barometer of social trends, at least some of them. I think one ignores her at risk of missing out. Not musically, but it's her music that puts her in this place of influence to begin with.
  7. Taylor Swift is a pretty interesting person, imo. But Mingus made great music and was an interesting person AND had an evolving revolving cast of interesting players who were also interesting people. And no two records from the time suggested are really alike. So... yeah. This is not Taylor Swift we're talking about here, although again, she is a very interesting person
  8. A good starting guideline is if a Mingus record has Jimmy Knepper, Shafi Hadi, Booker Ervin, Eric Dolphy, Jacki Byard, or Clifford Jordan on it and you haven't heard it, then you now have an opportunity of which to avail yourself, and to good end. That's for starters, but it's a good start imo.
  9. You maybe have to learn to internalize the splices. Like, INTENSE/SPLICE/INTENSE/SPLICE But ultimately and quickly, oh well about that.
  10. He was a Paris regular.
  11. I especially fig how the cover photo makes a "HM". And I need to get on the stick and respond to the music. Sorry.
  12. I'd stretch that out a few years both ways, but yeah.
  13. Billy Harper used to sell t-shirts. I had one.
  14. I just added it to my Roku lineup. It's free! A LOT of "international independent" film, not a lot of "jazz", but a Billy Bang documentary at least. Also some dance stuff (as in modern dance, not club stuff) that I can watch with interest If you remember BET Jazz... This is definitely not that (thankfully?) What it IS... We will see. Right now..."jazz" is the least of its priorities, which has me wondering where/how/why about this pretty sizable library of content that is not at all "Jazz" related. Stay tuned, maybe..
  15. None of it is that. You would need to go back to labels like Xanadu, Stash, Spotlite, labels that pulled a lot of stuff out from deep collector's world and gave it a little valuable daylight for a quick minute or two. Oh yeah, Uptown, who actually discovered something. Not sure about that ESP price point, but this is essential music. If you don't have it...
  16. Poots Lavelli - Introducing Poots Lavelli!!!
  17. Sœur Sourire Dominique Wilkins Fats Domino
  18. I like Adams just fine. He's always good for a well-defined statement. At least, once he gained his footing.
  19. Hi Resolution? Download?
  20. Larettia Dixton - Sweet Tender Love
