42 Mosaic Boxes at Bob's Blues & Jazz Mart
JSngry replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I wish he was younger and not looking at retirement...he really has been the soul of that business, imo. Like Lon said, a fan, first and foremost, and a fan with big ears and a big mind, big enough to see the total pictures of the music. His stepping back has had a shockingly evident impact on the business. But....that's life. -
Very interesting choices, but afraid not correct as IDs of the tracks. I can tell you, though, that the composer of #8 is a member of the group on #1.

Looks like the Rahsaan Barker Mosaic will be out before the Joe Henderson Mosaic!

Ted Gioia article on ECM
JSngry replied to cliffpeterson's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Yeah, I mean, "jazz"... what does that have to do with ECM? ECM is a record label run by one guy who records stuff he likes. Sometimes it's "jazz", sometimes it's not. Who cares? Especially in 2021, who cares? Tell me, who cares? "Jazz" is a product now, not real life. What little real life is left is going to be dead soon. What will be left is career strategies. That's mostly what there is now anyway. Sorry, but this article misses the point altogether. Should have written it about ECM music, not ECM jazz. Would've been a helluva lot more relevant story. -

Duke was gone the first time I looked, which was yesterday AM. Snooze/looze/etc. -

The Clayton was one of those that got both LP & CD issue. I wonder what the LP version is going for these days? About the same as the CD? the price was very good, I'd have paid that without hesitancy. But somebody else got there first. Oh well! -

I remember sleeping on it when it was out, already having the Piano Reflections material and thinking/knowing that the Capitol period was just all kinds of...discouraging...can you imagine the indignity of Duke being signed to a label whose standard bearer of significant jazz was Stan Kenton? Not that Kenton's noise was not relevant, but Duke was definitely not a real consideration at the label, even if "Satin Doll" was a hit. So I was like, eh, I don't want this one too much, and then it went OOP, and that was fine by me. But that was then...time has passed and now I know that Ellington gonna Ellington no matter what, no matter who the drummer was, no matter who the lead alto was, no matter who was gonna be doing what, in the end it all came out Ellington, and in the end it all matters. So now, yes, I want it. I just ain't paying no stupid price for it, that's all. We will meet some day, this set and I. Until then...just gotta wait my turn and be ready when I find myself at the front of the line, that's all. -

The Ellington/Capitol was long gone by the first time I looked at the page. Seems to be the ongoing story of my chasing that one...but it will come someday. I ain't worried about it, I just need to live long enough and get to the right place at the right time and have the money to pay a fair but not stoopid price. -
A mid-point(ish) review shows mostly favorable responses, for which I am certainly grateful! A look at the individual tracks: TRACK ONE - not identified, but a lot of listeners are hearing elements/components of what went into the piece. The group's repertoire is anything but monolithic though! TRACK TWO - Band, tune, tenor soloist and venue(?) all identified. I think Mike Weil summed it up best - "wild"! TRACK THREE - Still not identified. Legendary group and lead singer...perhaps a crypto-clue is in order - Riverdale's Archie sitting behind Mockingbird's Foxx, both travelling together n Tizol's tour group. TRACK FOUR - The record itself got bumped into by Dub Modal, but its actual content/context has not yet really been identified. It's interesting in a few ways, further sleuthing will coax it out. TRACK FIVE - Almost immediately identified (Felser would know!), so let everyday be one where it can be said, c'mon Vince, play your vibes! TRACK SIX - Tune identified, band not. A lot of speculations pointing in the right way, though! TRACK SEVEN - BillF cracked the composer code right away, which was really all that was expected, although if anybody can go deeper on the ID, bonus points! TRACK EIGHT - A lot of positive response to this one (whew!), not yet identified though. A hint - the composer has won both a Pulitzer and a Grammy, has not yet turned 40, and is in no way slowing down. Still got half the month left, so anybody who still wants to participate, please do. Be it further responses or initial impressions, it's all good. Y'all come!

closed a few more gaps...got a few left, primarily the Ellington Capitol set, but a deal comes around eventually, it always does. And if it doesn't, oh well! -

Fans of Smile, take note...and wipe that smile off your face. That was then, this is now. Every day, surviving death, we send out our horses. They don’t come back. Here the dry river’s a place not to camp, the night a place not to be. An army gathers rattling its pans, thinking of home, an army that will turn your head to a fire in the sand where those who've survived this wait out of time in the dust and the gold, with the horse you thought was gone.

You might have forgotten this one: Other than the Rota album, this is the one I think actually works in ways that the others don't/don't quite. and so forth. a study in contrasts... It's one of those records that justifies itself simply by having been done.

I learned a long time ago that in Texas, you take gotta be ready care of yourself at all times. Getting help when needed is always a wonderful thing, getting effective, coordinated organized help is even more wonderful. But in these parts, not everybody feels that way (and some are outright hostile to the notion) , so...every tub on its own bottom, as they say/said, even if you're not a tub.

wouldn't want to assume that...Laswell ahs always struck me as a pack-rat-y kind of guy for some reason. Maybe all the remixes, just seems like the kind of guy who keeps stuff around. I could be totally wrong.
