LF: Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams Mosaic set
JSngry replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Offering and Looking For...
Bank to bank = interbank. Intermediaries who don't charge a fee do not affect the outcome. The money I spend at Kroger goes from my bank to Kroger's bank, I'm pretty sure (and am also willing to be proven wrong), not to the Kroger store itself for them to then put into their bank. I don't know what the legalities are in terms of defining who's what, but the practical result is the same. Apart from the debit card system, though, most banks do offer their own bill paying services where you simply "write a check" from your online banking account to whoever you're paying, and then it's a straight EFT, the money goes from your account to theirs. The recipient has to provide you with some kind of ID, if not their actual account #, then some other kind of code so the computer knows where to move the money. We as a country might well be naive about how fluidly money moves electronically these days, but boy, does it ever! -

Maybe not as a concept, but as a reality, it happens damn near every time you use a debit card or otherwise authorize any other EFT. Might not be familiar with the mechanics, but the reality is how almost everybody gets paid for pretty much everything. Pay your bills online, through your band's site? Like, you pay Joe's Yard Service every month when they send you an invoice and you choose to use your bank's bill-pay service rather than Joe's? That's exactly what that is. -
Strange BN lp on ebay: re- John Patton

Too bad there's not better pictures of the entire record. A 50 year old promo that has no sleeve would surely be at least a little scuffy by now? If this is real, though, I do like the possibility that the record was supposed to be named "Split" instead of "Spirit". That makes just a little more sense? -

So you think they were getting not just master tapes from America, but stampers from Rudy as well? -
The only Carter CTI that really worked for me was the one with Joe. The others...too much icing, not enough cake. Agreed on Uptown Conversation, though, and I did like that first record with him as the lead instrument, what was it, Piccolo? Pegleg? Both? The piccolo bass band, that worked in a nuevo-Chico Hamilton sort of way for me. The guy has certainly made a lot of leader dates, but...

Simulated (Strat-O-Matic) 2020 MLB Season

Can't readily find any recordings of McLendon's simulated live games, just this reminiscence by Ol' Wink: The sound effects, needless to say, were cheesy beyond description, at least they were on the imitator I heard, -

The Made In Germany stamp seems to be a lot deeper than does the Van Gelder one. How easy would it be to after-market the latter? Just a superficial applying of a hot stamp or something? Or vice-versa? -

Does Vegas have a book on this? Is that a Gordon McLendon reference? I never heard McLendon, but he inspired some imitators. I did hear one such fellow on a local radio station, omce. It was surreal, and probably totally without the express written consent of anybody. -

China's government not fully forthcoming? I'm shocked, I tell you. SHOCKED! -
Well, now I can say that I've heard it.

I like how they paid attention and actually DID "see it coming". -
Heard it and tried it, on the "Moonglow" solo from that 1957 Newport record. It sounded like Bird in every way but the tone and accents...pretty big differences there, but if the intended point was just to point out that Hawk was ahead of the curve in terms of introducing an element of chromaticism into jazz improvisation(and as a result altering the length and contours of the lines), then it's a sound point that can be applied beginning several decades earlier!

Here's a story about planning, listening, anticipating, and not fucking up after so doing: https://www.texasmonthly.com/food/heb-prepared-coronavirus-pandemic/?utm_source=pocket-newtab -

See, that would be all the incentive it would take for me to either feign deafness or else learn the shit outta the stuff. Wither way, if she's hellbound to nag you about something, it won't be THAT! -
Oh yeah, I got memories! and yes, that is Harry Kallas... Why yes, he does!

From that document: BOB WILBER NYC. ca. 1960/61 Personnel including Bob Wilber (ts?, comp, arr), Seldon Powell (ts), Hilton Jefferson, Jerome Richardson, (as) and others. Eight titles were recorded for Music Minus One 4006 (cannot find this in Lord), issued as “For Saxes Only!”. Lots of tenorsax playing here, but difficult to note down, and who is it? Seems to be the same artist on all items. No, not that difficult. One side of the LP is "minus" alto, and all tenor solos are heard naturally. Wilber plays some, Powell plays some. Their styles are not hard to distinguish. Judging by how they "minus" the instruments, It seems like they had mikes on everybody and then pulled down whichever one was playing the "minus"-ed part. Sometimes it's the lead alto, sometimes the 2nd. Same thing with the tenor side, sometimes you're playing Wilber's part, sometime Powell's. The cool (kinda) thing is that there's enough occasional leakage on the each side that you can confirm 100% that it's the same performances on both sides. That, and the solos that you, the at-home player, are being asked to play are transcribed and notated in the play-along chart. So if you want to learn a Powell, solo, you just listen to the "minus alto" side and boom, there it is. I mean, you can still hear it on the minus tenor side but just as leakage. On the minus alto side, it's there, just like a regular record. Listen to one side, read the part from the chart for the other side. Minus tenor (and this is one where Powell solos, so he's not hear hear, you play his part): Now, same performance, minus alto, with Powell heard fully:

Working thru the Art Farmer BS/SN box, these records being ones that I've been either unfamiliar or under-impressed with. The recent Tommy Offer made it more that easy to get the bunch and engage. So far... Nice enough, but I doubt I'll be revisiting anytime soon. This one, otoh, haha YES! Definitely getting another spin or two before EOD, and not just because Sahib Shihab is in top form here, he's not the only one!

It will still open in Excel (as long as you don't have something else set up to handle it, but yeah, that can get really wonky, especially with names. But if you're the type of person who enjoys cracking something open as much if not more than doing something with it afterwards, hey, GAME ON!!!!

It's a potentially deeply rewarding thing, studying theory and learning what the "rules" are, and then what happens when those rules get broken in ways that either do or do not work - and then, why, what new "rules" come out of breaking the old ones. Endless, really, and eventually it merges with physics, anthropology, sociology, philosophy, theology, psychoacoustics, life, really, because in the end, music is nothing if not life. Have fun with it!

If it's in a CSV file, try formatting it as a table, then put in filters on every row column so you can sort how you like. And then save it as an Excel workbook/worksheet instead of a CSV file. THAT point is critical, because a CSV file don't wanna hear about all that fancy "formatting", CSV don't play that. Might also be a good time to learn about Text-To-Column functionality too, and Format Painter. Hell, between being retired and sheltering in place, you can use this time to reinvent yourself as a You Tube character, the old guy who teaches other old guys how to make Excel work for them rather than against them. I mean, there's a market. I work with Excel all day long, and started out not knowing one damn thing about it. I still don't know more than a few damn things about it, but they're the type of things that, like, when you get a bunch of nastyass data from somebody who think that "formatting" is something you do to place settings or something, instead of going to their desk and deathraying them, now it's possible to just mentally eviscerate them and then go about getting that data the way you need it to be. Just saying, it's a process, and there is a learning curve. But dude - you passed the bar, right? You can do this too. And if you like solving puzzles, hey, Excel is JUST the toy for you to learn to play with at this point in your life!
