Fresh Sounds did a 2 CD issue of Wardell's sole LP coupled with the two Evans Bradshaw Riverside LPs. I find Wardell's material more, for lack of a better term, "compelling" than Bradshaw's two, so me, I found all of it on the blogosphere, captured it all and then kept what I wanted. Since it's Fresh Sounds, hey, I did what they did without inconveniencing them. Still waiting for the Thank You Note, but I know they got their hands full, so I'm not upset about not getting it yet, at least not right now.

Yeah, the fearless-corporate-warrior thing is a sucker's game for sure. You can't grow what you can't defend, and you can't defend what you don't protect, and you can't protect what you carelessly expose to unnecessary risk. What was that Richard Pryor line, you don't get to be old bein' no fool. Well yeah - that. Real life is not a Marvel Movie. Just sayin'... -
What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

Ace kept the name alive in a variety of increasingly irrelevant locations for a good while, but the main downtown store closed up sometimes in the late 1970s/early 1980s, if memory serves. Jazz record trivia - if you wonder about that run of titles by people like James Moody and a few others that got released on Paula, that was part of a deal that Paul Serrano made to distribute sessions he had made on spec. Chuck would know the details better than me (he's who I learned them from, actually), but Prestige was also in the mix, which in retrospect explains why there for a while, the downtown Stan's had promo copies of all the new Prestige albums in their cutout bins. And this was a time when Prestige was crankin' 'em out in good measure, so...I made as many trips to the big city as I could get my parents to make (this was before I was driving). I get the impression that Stan Lewis was a bit (or more) of a "wheeler-dealer", if you know what I mean. And the whole Jewl/Paula/Ronn thing was still active not TOO terrible long ago. When I went through my period of getting, uh..."certain musics" from truck stops, their product was a big player in that mix. And somewhere, I think I still have a copy of the mail-order catalogue they put out from that same time, which was chock full of musics and videos that I think it's safe to say were not even remotely targeted to any audences other than Southern Black People (And Those Who Knew Them Well). There's no doubt a story or two (thousand) to be had there, and truthfully, it will most likely never be fully told. It's too regional, too ethnic, and probably too many bodies missing to ever get full sunlight. Which is probably as it should be and was always meant to be. -

The birds might be telling us that spring is on the way? Talking abut "beauty in life", I've started working from home for two weeks as a precaution, and I can't tell you how great it is to be back at a place (ie - the kitchen table) that has windows aplenty. We have a couple of bird feeders out back, one of them right next to a nice tall window, and there's a steady parade of cardinals and blue jays and sparrows (like a Doo Wop World Series!) pretty much all day. Totally delightful! -
I've got that Riverside program and like it a good lot. it was part of the Cannonball Adderley Presentation series, all of which were very enlightening records. He has kind of an Elmo Hope-ish "focus" thing going on, and the non-Standards have titles that suggest that he was hearing the call of Elijah Muhammed, as were so many other jazz musicians of the time. On this record, anyway, it sounds like he had a lot of creative energy bundled up inside. Definitely worth checking out. Not sure that you have him on the Amy Select, though?

Originally recorded for Columbia. Sony has kept the Shostakovich in print, but not the Bartok, which is the premier recording of the piece.

Yes, forgive me for taking a few minutes to shake the cobwebs loose and realize that this is not Vinnie Bell we're talking about.

Do they have ANY performance video they can stream? Or could they work with their artist roster to get some? Have a Big Ears Channel or something? Or did they get exponentially popular in a way that they didn't really think about that in time? no blame if so, just saying, this year sounded like it was going to be a pivotal one in terms of broader visibility, would hate for that to be totally wasted.

For a while... Whatever ever else "comes next", I am waiting to see what, if any, audience outreach/growing/etc/whatever results from this. Like the rest of all things digital, perhaps now is the time to get going or else be left behind. and like the rest of all things digital, enjoy it in its "pure" form while it lasts. I mean, I remember when Bravo did not interrupt any of their shows with commercials! Part of me ants to hope that if enough people realize that so much of their "musical entertainment" these days is less rooted in actual music than it is cultural pathofleastresistance-ism, they might start getting a craving for something a little more, uh...pointed in intent (and result). Then again, probably not, not in the post Tik-Tok era. Oh well, let's see!

First(?), the Metropolitan Opera puts up free nightly streaming. Today, I get an email from TACA (a regional arts group), promoting streaming platforms for the following local : The Dallas Opera Livestream Recital American Art Songs & Excepts from Don Carlo Lucas Meachem, Baritone Irina Meachem, Piano Avant Chamber Ballet 360° World Premiere video of 19th Amendment from February 15, 2020 at City Performance Hall Katie Puder, Choreographer Quinn Mason, Composer American Baroque Opera Company La Serva Padrona by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi Watch ABOC's full-length production free on YouTube! Dallas Museum of Art The Collection More than 25,000 works of art from all culture and time periods available online for free, anytime. Dallas Symphony Orchestra #keepthemusicgoing on Facebook Listen to DSO musicians as they play along with each other from the comfort of their own homes. Lumedia Musicworks Short Films/Music Videos In tandem with their live programming, Lumedia also produces music videos that are presented both online and at select shows. How many of these platforms/events are a specific repsonse/reaction to the ongoing outbreak, I can't tell you. Some, maybe? Definitely not all. But we were talking about what Big Ears (and probably by extension, all creative improvisational-centric music, jazz and otherwise) does to cope with this most immediately impactful situation. Here's one way to respond. How are things in your town?

Take care, Felser, best wishes to you and yours. It seems to me that right now, the only thing we civilians can do is to look at this in the most basic mathematical terms - everybody just limit (or if possible, eliminate) the number of optional opportunities of/for exposure (initial or further) you have, period. And then, just....wait. Solve this particular equation by eliminating all the variables. What is left is the answer. The fewer variables left, the closer to an answer we are. The more variables remaining...the farther we are from an answer. Doing/Thinking anything else is just (at best) hope, which as great as it is for many things, is definitely not a strategy. -
I do remember her (but not as "her", specifically) as a lively and welcome contributer. Sad to hear this and please convey condolences if possible.

That bottom picture is rather, uh...unsettling. Especially since it looks like there are electric cords connected to the chair. -

Did you spend time in Shreveport? It was about an hour away from the town where I grew up, actually closer than Dallas. So when the family "went to the city" it was almost always Shreveport. Pluse, we lived there from 1962-1965, my dad worked for Texaco and they had a big office there. Stan's was one of those record stores that always had records blaring. The Jewel/Paula offices were literally nest door, and there was always a "contingent" of some kind or another around. And it was also, ca. 1971, where I discovered that promo copies were sold in some places for significantly less than list price! Only saw Stan Lewis in the store a few times, but his brother Ace ran a satellite sore out in the outer city. Ace was a really hip guy, a real jazz fan, and always had good jazz playing in his store on a top-quality system. I guess Shreveport has been pretty much a broken shadow for several decades now. but between it and the "notorious" Bossier City across the river...there used to be a palpable energy there. -

Let's stick to personally known/provable facts here and keep our opinions for elsewhere. This is not a music or sports thread, so please, adjust the "banter" accordingly and appropriately. Y'all know who y'all are, ok? -
Let's take a Windows-y approach to this and uninstall the existing iteration of the app and then install a new one, from scratch. No guarantees that that's a fix, but being a Windows user means never having to not be ready to say "hey fuck it, let's just start the whole damn thing over".And for some perverse reason, I feel comfortable with that reality. And you doctor only uses Facetime, no other video conferencing application(s), like Skype, or Duo?
