Barbara Ritchie leaves a little to be desired, maybe. But Brubeck backing her is almost like a parallel universe Monk! That spoken introduction is a faux-erudite reference to autumn, therefore "September Song". It's annoying as fuck, that kind of thing, but Nat Hentoff a few years later does the same type thing only more fluently (which is even more annoying!). Is there anything else on either side of the disc?

You bought more of his records than I did.

I'll see your Les Baxter 101 Strings and call it with the Nelson Riddle Same: The first time I heard that record, it kinda fucked me up, because, you know, 101 Strings and shit. And then...Nelson Riddle had a melancholy streak that was more like a canyon...reading his biography, it appears that at root he was a very sad man. Then again, with a middle name like Smock...

Memory returns - it was Carol Burnett, not Merv Griffin! Merv often had Mrs. Miller in the audience, so, same thing, only very different.

Nobody's going to make it disappear, so keep using it as you see fit.

It's what I'm listening to now. Tired of segregation. I'll do vinyl, because that's about format, not music. But otherwise, "what are you listening to now?" is the question of this thread. Besides, I really don't know what "classical" music is these days, any more than I do what "jazz" is these days. And except for academic and/or sociological concerns, as Dan Gould says, DKDC.

Sounds right to me. Even at that, though, infinitely preferable to Howard Stern,

Alright, Barbara Ritchie it is! And Jimmy Lyons likely as the host, on KNBC (radio): https://bayarearadio.org/sf-radio-history/kpo On the off chance it was an early TV thing, the SF NBC station was KRON: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KRON-TV James Harrod is one serious cat!

How dumb it would have been to have not released Slice whole.

If Louis had not recorded "Hello Dolly", would anybody else have been able to make it that big a hit? Or a real hit at all?
-
Where is this actually confirmed?

Would be nice to hear anyway...you never know...especially if it's off a TV show. One name or place might be all it takes to get the ball rolling. As far as TV shows...early local TV was a trip. They needed programming, and if somebody like Brubeck, who would have then been making a little noise in the area, wanted to come in a play a tune or two, no problem. Apparently Jerry Lester in NYC would have guys on like this, isn't there a story of Bird coming on and jamming "Almost Like Being In Love" over the closing credits, something like that? Just saying - assume nothing about what might or might not be nonsense unless/until you have a solid multi-planar frame of reference from which to so do! Ok, are you sure it's TV and not radio? Either way, I don't know Jimmy Lyons' voice well enough to tell if it's him, but that would be a logical "first guess" as to who the host is, right?

I have no way to connect Barbara Ritchie & Barbara Baxley. But searching for "Barbara Ritchie" from a lot of different angles leads nowhere. If you want to, post the audio and stuff from the other side. There might be clues there.

That's "Shine On Harvest Moon". You might have something there.... . This might be that Barbara: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Baxley

Are there any box bargains currently available?
JSngry replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Found another one for $175, been wanting this one since it was released. Have "copies" of discs and book alike, but something like this, I want an original, just because. If there's a little wear, oh well. Here's one for $199.99: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Duke-Ellington-The-Centennial-Edition-Complete-RCA-Victor-Recordings/153772761855?epid=3313123&hash=item23cd9222ff:g:IuIAAOSwFZNeAUQK It may well be that prices will continue to drop as the perceived market for anything CD-related continues to drop, but I'll take mine now, thank you. -
Those are damn good records. Does Ace own these legitimately now? If so, can plz we hz this, yes?

Included - as pictured - free as a bonus in a completely unrelated Discogs order. Never heard of Gene Mayl or his band but although it ain't "great", it don't exactly suck either. There's a good, spirited trumpeter, drummer, and kinda to my surprise, banjoist on board, and they carry on just nicely, I guess this is the record jacket: CD reissue on Delmark, who knew?!?!? Dixieland, live in Waukesha. Whole 'nother world, at least for me.

Partially - but only partially - reissued on Xanadu 203.

A bit sobering to think that it's already 10 years old...seems like no more than half that... -
On the whole, yeah, but there's enough spread across the later albums (especially Rejuvenation) that make me happy to get them on CD in a packaging such as this. AFAIC, Zig is one of the greatest drummers of the 20th Century. He was one of the main guys to get my head out of my ass about the whole "swing is a jazz thing" nonsense. No - swing is a human thing, period, and New Orleans swing only sometimes occurs in "jazz" (and sometimes not there at all!) Zig...that shit runs deep! He wasn't the first, nor will he be the last. But he was one who grabbed me and pulled me into it all the way. (Al Jackson, that's another one...the list goes on...)

Looked to see, before ordering, how much Meters I had on (legit) CD and was shocked/horrified to find out that all I had was LPs and 45s. A damn good number of those,. but no CDs??? WTF?!?!?!? Anyway, looks to be a dream set, and this outfit is legit AFAIK, so "problem" solved. https://soulmusic.com/article/soulmusic-records-meters-gettin-funkier-all-time
