  1. no, it's not. There's also Vivaldi & Couperin: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057937/reference
  2. For many years, viewers of the film who recognized the music thought that they were listening to the original recordings, though in fact they were new and had never been heard. Ok, having never seen the film, the leads me to wonder ift: They just used very brief extracts in the film (which the NPR article would appear to posit oteherwise) and/or people really don't pay attention to the details of what they're listening to...if you know a record well enough, you ought to have some kind of sense that, oh, this is different, at least if you get enough of it in one bite. and/or this statement itself is more or less bullshit, because how amny people (for many years, in fact!) even knew about this film and/or Coltrane's music found within?
  3. That picture looks like what so much of Mulligan's writing sounds like. Marvelous photo!
  4. It sounds like what anybody with musical integrity and personal awareness would say about damn near anybody who was coming from a different place but was still working towards getting to the same place.
  5. Oh, it's definitely now an Impulse release, but I'm not seeing any indication that it was originally recorded for/by Impulse!
  6. Oh, is this really an "Impulse! session"? Maybe not, eh?
  7. Ok, so this was a real movie, and at least some of this music was used in it: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057937/reference Seems like a sporadic/scattered releases in various countries, 1967 for the US: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057937/releaseinfo#akas So it seems that this is a full recording session dedicated to providing a base of music from which the film's producers/directors could extract what they wanted. I don't recall reading about Coltrane's music being used in this film in any of the biographies, much less that it was music recorded especially for the film. In that sense, this is a truly "historic" release. How the music will be, well...we'll see. Going to have to keep in mind the purpose behind the session, and evaluate it in those terms, as well as any other criteria that apply. But yeah, I'll bite.
  8. The hell I wouldn't, I LOVE to get the month of August off!
  9. articulation & timbre...her pitch is good enough, but what I've heard of her sounds like she's not yet got a grip on the differences between "jazz" and "R&B", which...that's an observation that can easily be misunderstood because Black Music covers both, and some might say that she's embracing the "bothness", but I don't know...developed singers or all entry points develop a way to not send "mixed messages", but to instead send "complex/layered/nuanced messages"...Cassandra Wilson never sounded just like a "jazz singer" (except when she wanted to!), but there's never any doubt that she's absorbed and processed that whole vocabulary. And so on... nothing wrong with a merge of "influences, in fact, that can be the best outcome of all. But when you call attention to one specific aspect and then deliver a not fully-formed exposition of it...people notice. Or not, hell, what do I know about that. I notice, for whatever that's worth. Absorbing and processing a vocabulary, fluently speaking a language. It ain't easy, and since very few people truly have it (jazz) as their "native tongue" these days, it's a more dedicated task than ever. But you can't just "claim" jazz, it's not a colonial conquest, not is it an anti-colonial uprising. The business of it is, most certainly, but the music...that shit is deeper than any of that, much deeper.
  10. So this was actually used in a movie? Or just recorded for it but not used? What's the deal about this?
  11. Yes, that worked!
  12. So parents get off when the kids are out of school? I want THT gig too!
  13. Scandalous!
  14. First, save the image, then upload it here. Do that by selecting "My Attachments" from the dropdown that comes from your login name/profile. Mine's in the upper right of the page, but on your phone, it might be elsewhere. After that, click the "Insert other media" button in the open posting box & engage the "insert existing attachment" process. It's not the simplest process in the world, but without a URL for the image, that's how it works. Let me know via PM if you'd like further assistance. It would mean sending me the photo to upload here, but I'm a safe, decent guy, some perceptions to the contrary!
  15. Wow, a whole month off. I want THAT gig! Seriously, thanks for the update, very much looking forward to getting these items!
  16. Saw her on Tavis Smiley, cringed more than a little. I love Betty Carter. Maybe she's grown. Hope so.
  17. How's this going, Tommy?
  18. Glad to see the bundle/set sale idea. I'm thinking about selling some stuff and have decided that if I do, that's how I'm doing it, one price for all of it. If I'm counting correctly, your offer is < $7.00 item, including S&H. Pretty good deal!
  19. Moods has the best Chris Potter solo on record, imo. Seriously.
  20. I find it a little sketchy that the only Google results for "Subri Moulin" (and for "Cawanda's Group") involve this music/record.
  21. That's what I see here.
  22. Yeah, if it was some good acid, I've no doubt that Crosby thought that's what he saw. As to whether or not what he saw was actually there....
  23. Mulligan sure looked like his mother! https://www.gerrymulligan.com/autobiography/
  24. What kind of drugs are we talking here?
  25. Yeah, three blatant phallic symbols asking the scantily clad chick if she's ready. I'm sure she was ready - to get the fuck outta there. Love!
