  1. I also much prefer early Waits. It is not often mentioned but I love the soundtrack to 'One From the Heart' by Waits and Crystal Gayle. It has a great late night vibe and features Teddy Edwards, Jack Sheldon and Shelly Manne among others.
  2. The Capitol albums badly need revisiting, I think. I'd like to see a boxed set along the lines of the upcoming Beatles ones: new mono and stereo remasters in mini LP sleeves. The RCA, Columbia and Reprise albums have all been handled perfectly in their respective boxed sets, but EMI's neglect of the Capitol albums stands out a mile. Well, they did do the Concepts and Singles boxes, which pretty well reissued everything. One can certainly argue with the quality of the sound (though it mostly sounds pretty good to me), and it would be way cool to have the mono pressings from the early stereo era, but those still strike me as pretty good boxes. Is your problem with the sound? greg mo Not to mention the 21 CD British 'Capitol Years' box which is generally regarded as having the best sound of all the Capitol CD releases.
  3. It's a 5-disc set due out in November: Sinatra: New York Thanks for this. Sounds great, I have Hollywood and Vegas and will buy this too when the price is right.
  4. The article in question. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405...=googlenews_wsj
  5. What a steal! Wish I'd known that earlier, I would've lumped it in. Oh well, there's always this alternative which started yesterday: I guess 4-CD box sets don't count as 4 CDs. Any recommendations on what the other three should be? I see there are a couple of Joe Henderson 'Milestone Years' boxes available at $23.99.
  6. I am a fan, great voice and some really good songs with a jazzy vibe. Saw her live at a small club in Tokyo in early 1985 just as 'Diamond Life' was becoming a big hit. Stood just a few feet away from her and thought she was gorgeous. I remember she walked back to her hotel after the show with one of the band, a friend and I followed with the intention of inviting her for a drink but never quite worked up the courage.
  7. Debut Records Story box set is another bargain at $8.97. http://www.secondspin.com/music/product-detail.jsp?id=890182
  8. Thanks guys! Just ordered Fearless Leader and Interplay for a total of $33.58 delivered to Japan.
  9. For those who still don't have this set, it is available on Amazon UK for 8.79 pounds (around $14.50). If ordering from outside Europe 15% VAT would be deducted from this price.
  10. The Wallander novels by Henning Mankell are superb, among the best in the genre.
  11. Nancy and Frank. So 60's, so cool!
  12. Disk Union in Tokyo (various branches). I only buy CD's but they also have thousands of used jazz records. I am no expert on vinyl but the prices seem reasonable and the selection great.
  13. 'The House That Trane Built: The Story of Impulse Records' The 4CD box set cost around $7.50 on eBay UK including postage. Seems like a bargain, probably spelling Trane as Tane didn't help .
  14. Despite its camp appeal and the presence of the great William Shatner, to me the original is by far the weakest Star Trek Series. Love DS9, NG and Voyager.
  15. Murray? What is he then? Roadkill? Ha! Actually, if he loses he is Scottish. If he actually manages to win then he is British.
  16. 'Jack Johnson' box is now down to 9.99 pounds at HMV.com. Just ordered a copy!
  17. The world is watching "House": http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090612/ts_al..._20090612112217 Season 4 just started here.
  18. Very true! This song was all the rage when I first visited.
  19. My brother lives in Bangkok and I have been there many times. One of my favourite cities in the world. Nowhere quite like Soi Cowboy to start an evening out with a few friends.
  20. Does the Mingus have anything on it which wasn't on the great 3CD set that came out several years ago? Is there really any reason for me to buy it or Sketches if I already have the Mingus box set and the Davis/Evans box? thx Not only does the Mingus not have anything that wasn't on the 3CD set, it appears to be missing the three alternates from Mingus Dynasty that were on disc 3 of that set. I guess they could not fit the entire earlier set onto 2 CD's. Given this, I see no reason to buy the new legacy edition, even if the mastering is slightly different and the notes are nice (which they also were on the 3CD set).
  21. If the lack of original cover art weren't enough, here's another reason to avoid Mosaic. We get it. Unlike most around here, you don't like Mosaic. Good luck with persuading others to avoid them.
  22. Not to split hairs but MJ was drafted in 1984 and the Bulls won their first title in 1991, so 7 years. Still, point taken!
  23. Have to disagree there! She is gorgeous just the way she is, but then again my taste in women is one of the reasons I am still in Tokyo!
  24. The Scorsese Dylan documentary "No Direction Home". Over 200 minutes long but quite riveting.
