  1. The Scorsese Dylan documentary "No Direction Home". Over 200 minutes long but quite riveting.
  2. Have to disagree there, perhaps a little Liverpool bias showing . United thoroughly deserved to win and Porto never really troubled them.
  3. I thought this was also too good to be buried in the YouTube thread. Never judge a book by the cover! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY
  4. I love Bilko, never fails to make me laugh! I must check what is available on DVD. Btw, I believe that Phil Silvers wrote the lyrics to "Nancy (With the Laughing Face)" while visiting Sinatra with Jimmy Van Heusen
  5. Oh ye of little faith, don't think it's cut and dry yet for Chelski, wait until after the weekend games to see who's still available for Tuesday. Chelsea were so superior that it is difficult to see any way back for Liverpool. They were made to look very ordinary and it will be interesting to see how they respond in the premier league.
  6. Much like Sven and England or, come to think of it, Sven and anyone.
  7. Trying to listen to more (relatively) recent jazz, so: Ben Allison - Little Things Run the World Thomas Chapin - Sky Piece Marc Copland - Haunted Heart and other Ballads
  8. Thanks for the heads up! Have the Art Pepper box but just bought the Joe Henderson Milestone and Debut Records Story boxes for a grand total of $21.88 delivered to Japan. The free shipping is just icing on the cake!
  9. Just finished watching on DVD the BBC production of Le Carre's cold war spy classic "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy". Just as great as I remember it being all those years ago and Alec Guiness is just perfect as George Smiley. A highpoint for BBC drama. Will follow up with "Smiley's People" this weekend.
  10. Over the New Year I noticed a Tete Montoliu CD in one of the Tokyo Disk Union shops for the very reasonable price of 105,000 yen (around $1,150 at current exchange rates). I think that is the highest price I have seen there for a single CD (unfortunately I can't recall the title).
  11. Reading this thread makes me realize how lucky I am to be living in Tokyo! Tower and HMV still have excellent jazz sections while Disk Union has to be the best used store anywhere in terms of both selection and price (they have several stores around Tokyo).
  12. Not Kanji MG but Katakana, the Japanese writing system used for foreign words and names.
  13. Nice article from todays Guardian. http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2008/nov/21...mond-de-felitta
  14. I see Jimmie Smith in Roppongi once in a while. Must tell him about this thread!
  15. I agree. Lou should be much higher on the list!
  16. A & B downtown is now gone. The "Albion" you refer to on Main is actually Adagio. You describe the atmosphere in there brilliantly. It and another Main St. shop, Red Cat Records, have really expanded their vinyl selection. Sikora's and Scrape (metal) seem to be thriving; the rest are surviving. HMV has lowered its prices to the extent that buying there now seems like a business transaction as opposed to being robbed. Vancouver is not known for its clubs unless you like big screen TVs and vomiting low-brows. The Cellar on Broadway is a nice jazz place, however. Harold Mabern plays there every year or so. I was, very briefly, in Vancouver in September and was staying near the main HMV store. Some of their prices were indeed reasonable and they had a number of jazz discs at C$15 for two (I bought a couple of Keepnews Collection CD's at this price).
  17. Calgary 60 points
  18. Amazing, 12 out of 12! Beginners luck I guess.
  19. PM sent.
  20. Have 'A Night in the Life', featuring Chris Potter, which is excellent. Unfortunately out of print but available used on Amazon Marketplace, although quite pricey.
  21. Agree with everybody else, keep on posting Chris! The thread is hugely enjoyable and a fine example of what makes Organissimo such a great board.
  22. Thanks, John. I will be in Tokyo from at least 9/29 to 10/2. We are also planning to go to Kyoto and possibly Nara before heading to Hanoi, but our plans aren't set for that part of the trip yet. Meeting up would be great if the dates work out for you. Will be out of Japan from 9/6-9/21 but will be around the dates you mention so let's touch bases later in September. Actually, it would be great to meet Kinuta too, I am sure his Japanese is much better than mine! You may already know this, but the website for Metropolis, the main free Tokyo weekly, has a lot of information about upcoming events and other stuff. Here is the link: http://metropolis.co.jp/default.asp
  23. I would also recommend Shibuya over Roppongi. Better transportation links, great for CD shopping (HMV, Tower, Disc Union, Reco) and plenty of places to eat and drink. I live in Azabu and know Roppongi pretty well, still great for really late drinking options but pretty sleazy these days. Depending when you will be here, would be happy to meet up at that time. Shinjuku is great but is just a few minutes from Shibuya on the Yamanote line.
  24. From a little store across the street: Barney Wilen- French Story Hard to beat the price on this CD, 100 yen (just below $1)!
  25. My package arrived in Tokyo yesterday. Quick shipping! Will listen at the weekend. Thanks Jim.
