IIRC, for a couple of years after the Concord liquidation, the US vendor Newbury Comics had many sales and was the "go to" destination for OJC CDs...I wonder if Newbury Comics is still around; haven't noticed them for many years.

Incredible resemblance between Clark Terry and Bud Powell! I had no idea, thanks for pointing that out. I think the "Mumbles" thing, which was even a single, first appeared on the 1964 album (don't know which was released first, single or album). I always had the impression it became a schtick that he would often perform. I'm pretty sure I saw it long ago on TV...

Funny thing about this reissue: they made Kenny the headliner (dropped "Continuum" and listed personnel in alphabetical order?) but neglected to spell his surname correctly. 🤣 [Error in jazz album cover / notes? How unusual...]

Looking at discogs, it seems to be a reissue of a 1982 Tadd Dameron tribute Mad About Tadd by a group called Continuum (including Kenny Barron). I've considered buying the 2003 CD release of that name, but never did. Claims to have been recorded at Van Gelder Studio and mixed at Fantasy Studios. Allmusic says it was released on an obscure independent label. The original LP releases were on the Quicksilver and Palo Alto labels, both based in California, but I know nothing of those labels. Mystery to me. Might be an interesting story behind it (Van Gelder Studio?). I think it's probably legit, but am not certain.

The topic goes back to an earlier thread, in which several posters asserted that the Eagles started out by carrying on with the "California sound" but gradually went downhill. I'm inclined to agree with that, but my only exposure is the singles. On the other hand, I heard Tom Waits doing "Ol' 55" on the radio the other day, and my knee-jerk reaction was that I preferred the Eagles' rendition (granted I've heard that one a hundred times more often than Waits's). 😄

I vaguely recall two or three Don Henley quasi-hit singles that I heard on the radio and thought sucked less than the Eagles. Had to check allmusic... "Dirty Laundry" and "Boys of Summer" are in that category. However, the tunes are pretty Eagles-like iirc. But I never owned any recordings by either.

That's the same release I got. Agreed, fine record. The Message from the Tribe disc (2nd version - the first version has completely different tracks than later editions) is also outstanding. There have been a lot of great Japanese reissues of late...I'm going to have to stop looking at Dusty Groove's site in order to keep the budget within reason.🙄

Not sure exactly what type of sleeves you have in mind. The above, which looks similar to inner sleeves used by Ogun and some Japanese reissue labels, are all over the place. The pic comes from Sleevecity site, but they've gotta be on Amazon, eBay and other sites as well.

There are some decent record stores scattered around the Mid-Hudson Valley, NY. Big recent growth has been in vinyl, afaict. For instance, I've found reasonably priced OJC CDs every time I've looked in Kingston, NY the past few years. Never left the shop empty-handed, visit about 3 times per year.

That Nistico CD example is bizarre, because even freakin' eBay 🤔 has the Just Jazz release much cheaper than DG's price. Maybe your theory is right.

FWIW, the set is offered at $60 + $4.99 domestic US shipping on discogs, so that DG price is consistent. (Based on a limited sample. 😄)

Don't think it's been mentioned, but I have a soft spot for Fuchsia Swing Song on the Sam Rivers album of the same title. You know right away it's not a run-of-the-mill Blue Note release, and the immediately recognizable Jaki Byard isn't on many Blue Notes.

I saw BH live when he was 75 and was stunned at how young he looked (didn't even have gray hair then iirc).
