  1. Nice haul. What city are you in?This was at the little Köln shop. I've got some discs in my Amazon cart that I saw at "2001" for quite a bit less, so I may be springin' for those as well. God, what a habit... was at that little Köln shop, too, on Saturday and got Mal Waldron's Seagulls of Kristiansund (they have a number of Black Saint items at 9,99 currently (www.zweitausendeins.de))
  2. don't know much Flute with Organ, but one that i like a lot is Seldon Powell on some tracks of Johnny Hammond Smith's Open House
  3. So that's it. my experience with talented people who study, for instance, law is that they become extremely selfconfident; one might argue however that at 275 he wouldn't have encountered limitations anywhere (or was it 235? above 200 it certainly was)
  4. saw that one, too; only JiP jewel case I know; just listening to Eddy Louiss Bohemia after Dark; a big thanks to all who recommended it here; btw, i got this one and the Sonny Criss from amazon.de seller tangotienda; very cheap and reliable, but they are Argentinian editions which have slightly worse printing quality for the cover and have only the discographical info in the booklet, no liner notes...
  5. firstborn, lost my last bit of faith in IQ tests when my brother got 275 points in one - not that he isn't clever but 275... he studies law so he will never get to know his limitations (same for my even younger sister) (as a mathematician i know them too well to consider myself especially smart; although there have been two or three treasured instances where i really saw a thing a few seconds (not more) quicker than people who are obvious geniuses)
  6. no need for google anymore (at least on .org)
  7. last week was my first week away from this board (since i am here regularly)... and now it's like time stood still thank you so much Jim for putting all this effort into it! (btw what i am missing in the new and great looking version are the links to the "today's active topics" page in every thread... but i will get used to it!) (will try the search function next...)

    Frank Strozier

just had one of the steeplechases, "what's goin on" in the mail today, very first impression, it is fine, but somehow, one factor is mssing, which i really liked about the siamese children (and still find in the VeeJay stuff to a lesser extent), can't really put it in words, some sort of introvertedness which i found pretty unique is not so much here, instead there is something what i would naively call "post bop feel" (and a clear Coltrane influence) (not surprisingly it is much more similar to Little Red's Fantasy but I like that one better...) don't know, just a very first impression i have not yet heard all of it..., the cd reissue which seems to be available cheaply right now has alternate takes of all tunes (67 minutes)... how is the Chet Baker with Strozier?
  9. love this sentence thanks for the link!
  10. just took a short trip to the coffee machine, will now put on... Legends of Acid Jazz Don Patterson / Booker Ervin and am back in the game
  11. Eddy Louiss - Bohemia after dark (partial response to the Louiss thread) Walt Dickerson - To my queen
  12. unfortunately, our feelings are like this...
  13. weird, seems like he really did both, or am I seeing something wrong (or did they mirror all those images...)
  14. thank you; wonder whether Johnny Griffin had a lot of influence on the production process (the sound samples on amazon.de sound like him btw)
  15. WTF??? Who the Hell is that, Paul Whiteman? Not Whiteman. It's Johnny Richards! Did they mix up their Johnnys? What's with the bathrobe, I wonder. the remarkable photograph draws the attention first... but: (Question to the native English speakers) Does the album title make any sense?
  16. and i didn't even know about the fifty year rule for cars
  17. wonder how ebay will get around this problem (which keeps prices down)
  18. cool story! (btw as the link slightly mislead me: it's post 60)
  19. link to that recommendations thread http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...c=34704&hl=
  20. sounds "insanely good" to these ears... that those who regretted that Wayne Shorter didn't play more like Albert Ayler didn't enjoy it back then, ok... that not everyone loves the cover art as much as i do, ok (same with little red's fantasy btw) but it is insanely good, Shaw is great on it, Jack DeJohnette is great, and LaMont Johnson was a really nice surprise...
  21. i got jackie mcleans demon's dance for christmas and liked shaw so much on it that i got several of his leader cds since then, Blackstone Legacy, Little Red's Fantasy, Rosewood and Dr Chi... none of these I regret buying, but for me only Little Red's Fantasy comes close to Demon's Dance (followed by Blackstone Legacy, then Dr Chi and then Rosewood...) ( so my recommendation: get Demon's Dance)
  22. it isn't actually i see i almost spoilt the story by not mentioning that he actually was looking for "straight ahead jazz" (= anything that will never be recommended in a free jazz thread) but didn't buy anything earlier than 1990 because of the poor recording quality, he said, like he was on the watch for the latest Scott Hamilton record or so (and from all this you could tell that most likely he was not completely together allthough i am still not certain)
  23. out of curiosity: does that have some jazz aspect to it? (all i know by Korngold is an opera i once saw, liked it a lot but it sure wasn't "jazzy")
  24. happy birthday!
