    Frank Strozier

just had one of the steeplechases, "what's goin on" in the mail today, very first impression, it is fine, but somehow, one factor is mssing, which i really liked about the siamese children (and still find in the VeeJay stuff to a lesser extent), can't really put it in words, some sort of introvertedness which i found pretty unique is not so much here, instead there is something what i would naively call "post bop feel" (and a clear Coltrane influence) (not surprisingly it is much more similar to Little Red's Fantasy but I like that one better...) don't know, just a very first impression i have not yet heard all of it..., the cd reissue which seems to be available cheaply right now has alternate takes of all tunes (67 minutes)... how is the Chet Baker with Strozier?
  2. love this sentence thanks for the link!
  3. just took a short trip to the coffee machine, will now put on... Legends of Acid Jazz Don Patterson / Booker Ervin and am back in the game
  4. Eddy Louiss - Bohemia after dark (partial response to the Louiss thread) Walt Dickerson - To my queen
  5. unfortunately, our feelings are like this...
  6. weird, seems like he really did both, or am I seeing something wrong (or did they mirror all those images...)
  7. thank you; wonder whether Johnny Griffin had a lot of influence on the production process (the sound samples on amazon.de sound like him btw)
  8. WTF??? Who the Hell is that, Paul Whiteman? Not Whiteman. It's Johnny Richards! Did they mix up their Johnnys? What's with the bathrobe, I wonder. the remarkable photograph draws the attention first... but: (Question to the native English speakers) Does the album title make any sense?
  9. and i didn't even know about the fifty year rule for cars
  10. wonder how ebay will get around this problem (which keeps prices down)
  11. cool story! (btw as the link slightly mislead me: it's post 60)
  12. link to that recommendations thread http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...c=34704&hl=
  13. sounds "insanely good" to these ears... that those who regretted that Wayne Shorter didn't play more like Albert Ayler didn't enjoy it back then, ok... that not everyone loves the cover art as much as i do, ok (same with little red's fantasy btw) but it is insanely good, Shaw is great on it, Jack DeJohnette is great, and LaMont Johnson was a really nice surprise...
  14. i got jackie mcleans demon's dance for christmas and liked shaw so much on it that i got several of his leader cds since then, Blackstone Legacy, Little Red's Fantasy, Rosewood and Dr Chi... none of these I regret buying, but for me only Little Red's Fantasy comes close to Demon's Dance (followed by Blackstone Legacy, then Dr Chi and then Rosewood...) ( so my recommendation: get Demon's Dance)
  15. it isn't actually i see i almost spoilt the story by not mentioning that he actually was looking for "straight ahead jazz" (= anything that will never be recommended in a free jazz thread) but didn't buy anything earlier than 1990 because of the poor recording quality, he said, like he was on the watch for the latest Scott Hamilton record or so (and from all this you could tell that most likely he was not completely together allthough i am still not certain)
  16. out of curiosity: does that have some jazz aspect to it? (all i know by Korngold is an opera i once saw, liked it a lot but it sure wasn't "jazzy")
  17. happy birthday!
  18. i was standing at the cut out bin (so there is only one copy of most cds ) at zweitausedeins and some fat 60 year old guy who was looking through the CDs in the next box turned around and without a word took all the 4 or 5 CDs i currently had in my hand (if this type of thing happened more often I'd have been less puzzled... luckily it doesn't) he looks through them, apparently they don't tell him anything (hatology or so) except the last one which was the Barney Wilen / Philip Petit Duo Album... he looks at it, says "Wilen, he was pretty good, like the French Doldinger" (?! sounded very competitive, the way he said that) "but, i do not buy any music that was recorded before 1990" (the Wilen is from the 80s) and handed it back to me with a disappointed look
  19. with which Tapscott Big Band Album would you start? it seems http://www.nimbuswest.com/ has Live At IUCC, Flight 19 and (LP only) The Call...?
