  1. the compilation has a relatively high sentimental value for me, it was one of my first 10 or so cds, i got in when i was 14 as a soundtrack for reading Jack Kerouacs "Subterraneans" (which would remain my favorite book for the next three years or so); was surprised to see that of all my cds just this compilation had gained substantial value - though in the light of those other reissues i don't really know why... still it's not a bad collection as an introduction to lesser known Blakey bands, such as the Gordon/Gryce one, this one, or the band from S'Make It...
  2. Lockjaw Davis - Trane Whistle marginally off topic, but i love this record and it has great Nelson Big Band arrangements
  3. Wasn't that Frank Wright and not Frank Mitchell? (presumably this is referring to 'Bob Holland' - but based in Rotterdam I think). sorry, you're right (and it was Bob Holland )(just a Frank i was surprised to see in that context...)
  4. does it say a year? i vaguely remember, that Chet Baker's manager could not look after Chet in the days before his death so he brought him to some other guy in Amsterdam who had the right, uh, connections and was regularly hosting musicians with these problems; well and that guy was hosting Woody Shaw, too, at that time and iirc Frank Mitchell; will look it up in de Valk... (that would have been 1989(?))
  5. maybe you think of a different Mitchell? (Billy) http://jazzlabels.klacto.net/xanadu.html
  6. i've asked this before without success, but: was there a Frank Mitchell vs Frank Haynes thread some time in the last 6 months or so, or did i dream it? besides: i was suprised to see this Verve compilation Compact Jazz Art Blakey http://www.amazon.com/Compact-Jazz-Art-Bla...9216&sr=1-1 is so pricey by now, but in case you have it and haven't really looked in years: the last two tracks are from Buttercorn Lady
  7. Because Shaw could not make it to a 1958 record session with Langston Hugues and Mingus. Shaw had the flu and could not go, he tried to phone Mingus but could not reach him. Mingus called Shaw and threatened him. He later apologized to Shaw. Shaw refused to rejoin the Mingus band. This is described in the Gene Santoro book on Mingus 'Myself When I Am Real'. wonder who called the Andorreans and threatened them away from Gene Shaws Argo LPs...
  8. on "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" it only says Bill Evans featuring Scott LaFaro iirc...
  9. i am not good at explaining... Jo-a-chim the J in Jo is not pronounced like in Joe, may be you do the right thing if you think of "eo" like in Cleopatra (but probably you prononce the o from Cleopatra like the oe in Joe? it's rather a "plain" o as in professional...) the middle "a" is like in "bath" chim: a first approximation is "kim" like in "next of kin" but the "ch" is the same non-english sound as the "j" from spanish baja (iirc)... nobody will be offended if you simply say "Kim" Kuhn (or rather Kühn with two dots on the u) the "h" is not spoken, it simply indicates that the "ü" is long. The ü is the same as the french u, so if you know french and pronounce the imaginary french word "kun" you will probably do the right thing... but again as there is no ü in English, so if you say Kuhn as you would say Steve Kuhn, or like "Cool" with an "n" instead of the "l" that would be fine with me
  10. Thank you Late for the link! according to the Prince Lasha page at Sonny Simmons homepage http://www.sonnysimmons.org/lasha.htm there were two Hamburg radio broadcasts...

  15. using the same worn-out trick again and again, i suppose; i love those stories of Getz and Chet Baker's European tour from Jeroen de Valks Chet Baker book...
  16. found 10 Euro on the street and decided to fill one of the more obvious gaps, still no Kind of Blue but Hank Mobley - Soul Station (second Mobley after Workout which was my graduation present from the high school big band, never really got into it - my fault i suppose)
  17. day by day the picture of Stan Getz becomes more and more complete
