  1. There are sound samples here: http://www.propermusic.com/product-details/Larry-Young-Larry-Young-in-Paris-The-ORTF-Recordings-2CD-222699 and a review including this type of information here: http://www.rte.ie/ten/reviews/music/2016/0118/761086-larry-young-in-paris/ Apparently, Young plays organ on the first nine of the ten tracks, with Jack Dieval added on piano on the last two tracks of Disc 1...

    MPS

quite a few are available digitally by now, see the first link in this thread, or http://www.mps-music.com/releases/ while I am not fond of buying mp3s, I appreciate that these appear on spotify with some delay...
  3. I don't think Roth ever lived a working class life in any narrow sense of that word - and certainly not in 1932 when Radetzkymarsch came out... His behavior was self-destructive already in the early 20s, he was in constant need of money, but this was a high income, high cost life style... he was one of the best-paid journalists of his time ... after 1933 he remained highly productive in exile (another seven novels or so ...), but there were no longer any newspapers that could/would print his work... (in fact, this explains very well why so many of his novels were written so late in his short life...). I also like Hotel Savoy a lot, maybe the best of his early work... other favorites are Flight without End, The Emperor's Tomb (in a sense Vol 2 of Radetzkymarsch), and Weights and Measures ...
  4. His German wikipedia entry lists Warne Marsh, Art Pepper, June Christy and the Lighthouse Allstars as groups Westbrook played with... guess we just have to wait - I would expect that they again put a bigger name on the cover, and I guess chances are high that the next release will be more typical "West Coast Jazz" https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forrest_Westbrook concerning Castro, I just found this old review of the Sims/Castro CD which has an interesting comments section: http://www.bagatellen.com/archives/reviews/000497.html mentioned are the following Stan Getz-Zoot Sims-Gerry Mulligan-Oscar Pettiford (amazing) *Billy Higgins-Teddy Edwards-Lucky Thompson-Leroy Vinnegar- Teddy Wilson-Dexter Gordon-Anita O'Day-Chico Hamilton- *Zoot Sims w/ Teddy Wilson *Stan Getz w/ Teddy Wilson Buddy Colette-Red Mitchell-Jimmy Gourley-Chuck Wayne- Lou Levy-Ron Jefferson-Mel Lewis-Jack Sheldon-Buddy Jones- Allen Eager-Philly Joe Jones-Paul Chambers-Vernon Alley- Monte Budwig-Paul Motian-Sonny Truitt-Gary Frommer-George Handy. *Oscar Pettiford-Lucky Thompson-Zoot Sims- *A 50-minute ‘avant garde’ piece by Chico Hamilton that mixes classical & jazz. where I have added stars for stuff in the current box... (no idea how to properly interpret the middle portion of that list) and Castro Jr. informs us what the next Fantasy/Concord CD would have been a Stan Getz album which has some overlap with the present set: "Actually the Fantasy/Concord merger didn't effect any releasing of the other material. I decided not to sell anymore Masters at the current time. They wanted to Release the Stan Getz Teddy Wilson, Doris Duke, Joe Castro, and Beverly Getz (on one track) the only recording of Stan and his Wife and it's beautiful. It's Stan with Teddy on 3 tracks (They never played together or recorded except this date) It’s a very strange Mix of Old Stride meets Cool School quite interesting. One With Doris Duke and Stan (She played piano very well I might add), and was taught by Teddy Wilson before my Father began teaching her."
  5. I suppose it just means more Westbrook (since the Carmell Jones' CD is rather short?) (the info i have is what Westbrook's daughter posted six weeks ago on the FW facebook page "Jordi Pujol of Fresh Sound Records will be in the room soon! Arriving from Barcelona the day after Thanksgiving to discuss the next CD! Stay tuned! (and stay in tune...)")
  6. Started listening yesterday and am now in the middle of disc 6. I agree about the first disc - it sure is interesting and it must have been a fun evening for those involved, but it's not something I need to hear on a regular basis (the trio track worked a bit better though). Disc 2, Teddy Wilson with Getz and Sims, is fantastic, and so is Disc 4 with the classical Edwards/Castro/Vinegar/Higgins Quartet. The jams with Lucky Thompson and Oscar Pettiford on Disc 3 are great but I don't think they are better than my (very high) expectations... DIsc 5, the Joe Castro Big Band with Edwards is nice - although others (G. Wilson) have recorded (imho) recorded Big Band albums featuring Edwards that sound similarly (and a bit less smooth)... Disc 6 makes an excellent first impressions ... so: I'd say the middle discs are the highlight - but it's beyond doubt a marvellous set. Both the Westbrook and Castro estates have announced further releases (J. Pujol visited around Thanksgiving...) - let's hope that at least some of those materialize...
  7. Please keep us informed about the CD! Don't know how I could miss that link yesterday ... Concerning Hill's presence on Conflict: I believe this was the time when Hill briefly lived in Los Angeles - which doesn't explain everything but might be all the explanation there is...
  8. just reread this page: http://www.mtaonline.net/~midnight/abouttheband.htm and stumbled over the following sentence "All it takes is one listen to our live recording at the Organic Oasis to realize what a treasure this guy is." the CD is apparently available here: http://www.mtaonline.net/~midnight/cds.htm at some point, the page had more information on Woods... (but there's still a link to a review of Conflict etc, it's definitely him)... can't find any traces of gigs in the past 10 years, but I dimly remember he's a realtor in Anchorage, so possibly he's this guy: http://www.brokercloud.org/real-property-services-anchorage-ak/
  9. based on the one track I've heard, that is an excellent suggestion imho

    René Thomas

Alto, Flute and Soprano, actually... there's a long interview (in French) on youtube with Robert Jeanne, the tenor player in Thomas' Belgian working band from the 60s who proudly recalls everybody's day jobs - they were an educated bunch... Many of the best European musicians in that generation were proud not to be professional musicians, thus not having to play odd gigs. Jeanne was an architect, Jean Lerusse, the bass player in that band, was a medical doctor, only Felix Simtaine, the drummer, turned professional at some point around 1970 (hope I remember all this correctly)...
  11. here's the more comprehensive list by board member Holger Schrick... https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz-Nekrolog_2015
  12. apparently, another lineup is more likely for Ljubljana, at least, this is stated by people who possess the tape / the LP that contains one track of the gig. The alternative is Henderson / Waldron / Wayne Darling / Doug Hammond links: http://www.plosin.com/MilesAhead/Tapes.aspx?s=19790615 http://www.discogs.com/Various-Jazz-Na-Koncertnom-Podiju-Vol-4/release/3107244
  13. using the trick erwbol mentioned above, i.e. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=%22rat+race%22+site%3Aorganissimo.org
  14. pretty sure that this is the same disease with the search function we have had for the past few years... does anybody know how to find, say, this Mike Reed thread from 8 weeks ago: using the search function?
  15. here are some threads
  16. the band Joe Henderson (ts), Joanne Brackeen (p), John Lockwood (b), Danny Spencer (d) apparently evelved from Joe Henderson (ts), Steve Erquiaga (g), Ratzo Harris (b), Mike Hyman (d) via Joe Henderson (ts), Joanne Brackeen (p), Ratzo Harris (b), Danny Spencer (d) (that said: some details in the discography do not really make sense but we have some more people in there Lockwood, Spencer, Hyman... which are not exactly household names)
  17. Did you check this discography? http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Artists/Henderson/JoeHenderson.php There are two German concerts and a Dutch in late 1978 with the following band: Joe Henderson (ts), Joanne Brackeen (p), John Lockwood (b), Danny Spencer (d) no info on Velden 1979 but two weeks earlier and three days later (Ljubljana and Lugano), the band was Joe Henderson (ts), Mal Waldron (p), John Lockwood (b), Makaya Ntoshko in early 1981 in Vienna, the band was Joe Henderson (ts), Tete Montoliu (p), John Lockwood (b), Mike Hyman (d) while Velden 1981 had Joe Henderson (ts), Chick Corea (p), Gary Peacock (b), Roy Haynes (d)
  18. Bumping to test the search function
  19. hope you enjoy it! and i should have mentioned that on the label website the current price for this album (most albums) is 10 Euro including international shipping - which seems almost too cheap to me
  20. Slightly off topic, Simmons' Mixolydis which had been unavailable for a few years has been reissued (even with slightly improved artwork) by Futura/Marge... Heard it for the first two times yesterday and found that it exceeded my expectations... it's almost a classical Hard Bop album and Simmons fits in nicely (the rest of the band is Eddie Henderson, John Hicks, Curtis Lundy, Victor Lewis) http://futuramarge.free.fr/
  21. "[update: Apparently not white, sorry Mr. Herbert!] " guess he read this thread but wasn't really interested... (my first reaction to this correction was "herbert died before I was born so it sounds a bit disrespectful", but my english isn't good enough for this type of judgement after all)
  22. Ortega is the featured soloist on Sunset Eyes and that appears to be his only solo. Most solos are by Castro and Edwards, followed by Bob Cooper... on the Edwards Tentett album, there are also several Freddie Hill solos amazingly, they list soloists for all tunes where one might wonder (ie for the Zoot Sims/Lucky Thompson disc, the Big Band and the Teddy Edwards Tentett album): http://www.joecastrojazz.com/discography if the rightmost column is empty, it's not included in the set, second colum from right is soloists. For the big band album, this info is also here http://sunnysidezone.com/album/joe-castro-lush-life-a-musical-journey
  23. it's not a complete Castro discography actually (which would include his two Atlantic albums, as well as his album called "Lush Life" which appeared on Clover records but does not seem to have any overlap with this release) but rather a complete listing of the sessions related to this box - making clear what was left off, and what appeared earlier on Metrojazz and the Sims CD (ie making clear there is no overlap with the latter two releases - everything appears to be new except for two tracks from the Big Band album which appeared as a promo single at the time)
