I got it from eMusic and as a huge Andrew Hill fan I gotta say it's great!
-
Just saw that Universal will be releasing this in Germany (and probably most of Europe) on January 26. Cool!
-
The jewelcase edition of the Japanese import is available at a very low price these days.
-
How does the set compare to Asia Minor, the only Dizzy Reece I have so far?
-
Argh, don't even get me started... All those nice Art Pepper Contemporary albums... Those CDs by people I didn't even know about back then... It really was a great time. I got pretty much everything on Fantasy from the likes of Cannonball, Lockjaw, Bill Evans, Bobby Timmons, Blue Mitchell, Booker Ervin, Shelly Manne (four of the five Blackhawk discs!), McCoy Tyner (his Milestone albums were a revelation to me!), Sonny Rollins (all except three of his Milestone CDs!), Eric Alexander... all for €2.99 each - or even less in some cases! It was insane!

No, the four tracks with strings from February 28 1955 are missing from that one. Probably just a matter of not having enough space in those early days of CD mastering. I'd buy a remastered edition with all the material from EMI if they bothered to release one. Yeah, it's good that you brought that up. The copy protection idiocy would be another reason for me to go for the unofficial releases in some cases. At least they've finally stopped that recently, but you still have to be careful when buying EMI discs from between 2003 and 2006. Really annoying!

I'm interested in those three as well. I got the Gambit Records compilation of the early Chet Baker Sings sessions not long ago. All the studio stuff fits on one disc. But EMI keeps milking that cow and still won't offer a complete set of this, only countless incomplete compilations. I'll probably get the "Complete One and Two Feet in the Gutter" Dave Bailey compilation from Lone Hill soon. It seems one of the three albums included still isn't available on CD individually and there's one bonus track that was only available on some sampler LP previously. Once again I can only wonder why the original company behind these recordings doesn't offer this material this way. Let me add that on the other hand I'm quite disgusted at their recent Mosaic rip-off (Carmell Jones/Harold Land) and will definitely be buying the Mosaic Select instead.

I'm quickly becoming a big fan of Patton's music. After being very impressed with Boogaloo last week, I got Accent on the Blues today and Memphis to New York Spirit is already in the mail to me, too. Also I will definitely be ordering the Mosaic Select along with the Hutcherson and Tyner sets pretty soon.

I must have bought at least 150 of those Fantasy CDs last summer, so at least my wallet is happy to see this end. I really wish they'd offer the Joe Henderson Milestone Years boxset for a decent price, though.
-
Yeah, this bugs me as well. I got Kwanza cheap, but still... Why couldn't they just release For Losers with the missing tracks from Kwanza added? I don't even think this was a deliberate decision to annoy CD buyers, seems more like pure stupidity and lack of a larger reissue concept these days. Too bad!
-
That's not true, for example right now they're offering selected new Prestige and Blue Note RVGs for €6,99 - that's a pretty good price. Same goes for some Verve discs (I picked up Archie Shepp's Kwanza last week). Anyway, their programme changes all the time, so I'm sure we'll see more bargains with the arrival of the new "Merkheft" in late February.

So was I - thanks. Dito! I'll be picking this one up next month.

John Patton Mosaic Select: What's in, What's Out?
Kyo replied to Matthew's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Got my copy of Boogaloo today and after four consecutive listens I am definitely ready to order the Select set, lol! -
Have any of the Three Sounds sessions received the RVG treatment?
Kyo replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Re-issues
At least the complete sessions with Stanley Turrentine have been released as a 2CD RVG set. -
Sounds like the CD-R was burned with "CD Text" information. Quite a few major label discs feature this, too (especially those from Sony).
-
Add that unreleased Blue Note session from October 13 1970 I just read about and I'd buy it without thinking twice. Was that the one that Wayne didn't want released? I say it'd be fine put into historical perspective as an add-in to a box set like that.

John Patton Mosaic Select: What's in, What's Out?
Kyo replied to Matthew's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm not quite ready to order the whole Select set yet, but I just ordered Boogaloo after checking out the short samples over at amazon.com. My second Patton disc after Let 'em Roll (which I like quite a bit). Can't wait to hear the whole thing! -
Seems like the online discography info is simply wrong, that would explain why those tracks aren't part of the box set. Anyway, thanks for the information!
-
I need to get this. Good thing my self-imposed CD buying hiatus ends in one week!

The Bill Evans discography over at jazzdisco.org lists these titles from the concert: Bill Evans Trio Bill Evans (p) Eddie Gomez (b) Eliot Zigmund (d) Paris, France, November 5, 1976 T.T.T. Fantasy (J) VDJ 25035 Sugar Plum Fantasy 9FCD 1012-2, (J) VDJ 25035 Turn Out the Stars - Someday My Prince Will Come - All Mine (aka Minha) - All of You - Time Remembered - 34 Skidoo - Quiet Now Fantasy (J) VDJ 25035 T.T.T.T. Fantasy 9FCD 1012-2, (J) VDJ 25035 Waltz for Debby Fantasy 9FCD 1012-2 * Bill Evans - The Paris Concert (Fantasy (J) VDJ 25035) * Bill Evans - The Complete Fantasy Recordings (Fantasy 9FCD 1012-2) I don't have the box set (got most of the sessions on individual discs and the rest from eMusic). Can someone tell me why T.T.T. and Quiet Now haven't been included in the "Complete Fantasy Recordings" set? Are they available on CD in some way?
-
I have to agree with this. I'm glad I got it for my collection but if you can't find it for a decent price, just wait for it to be reissued. It's not worth spending $55 for.
-
I'll definitely get both the Tyner and the Hutcherson. Possibly also the Don Pullen set while I'm at it.
-
I bought it when they offered that discount for a few big Mosaic sets. I'll play it today, haven't really had the time to listen to it so far.
-
All I can say is "Power to the People at Concord"! It's about time that CD came out.

Couldn't help but notice this revived old thread. I'd just like to say that while I'm a bass player and not a drummer, Virgil Donati's approach to music and his total dedication to the craft are a huge inspiration for me. I saw him at a clinic a month and a half ago and was in awe for the whole time. He started off with a 30 minute drum solo and then explained many of the ideas he had improvised upon during that solo in detail later on - he has a really amazing polyrhythmic conception that will not sound "groovy" to the "usual" listener, but personally I can't get enough of those 5:4 polyrhythmic patterns. In their own way I think they groove like hell (very much like Meshuggah's music).
