  1. you should check that re: he was initially showing up to play....
  2. Christmas Cookin' = or > than "Accent on the Blues"? NULL SET! NULL SET!
  3. inspired by the recent in depth report on chicago era le sun'r ra, chewy wishes to understand...: i think he got busted once in the late 50s, but it wasn't as trumped up a charge and others got (gene ammons, et al), and then in the 60s as we have read he was in jail circa the time he wrote a slice of the top, one of his most accomplished statements as an artist anyways when did hank finally get off the junk? and don't tell me none of that "hank was doping up even in the early 80s" BS, thats not the case im pretty sure has anyone ever did a public records search for mobleys court records etc?? can u do that kind of stuff?
  4. anyone who thinks JOS is better than BJP or Little Miss Cott, or Larry Young, you are sadly, sadly mistaken sadly mistaken
  5. if i have the set (lost the booklet)- do i need BIG FUN? i specfiiclly am talking about GREAT EXPECTATIONS and GO AHEAD JOHN///are these songs in the box, and if so which ones are they? all this fusion miles blends together for me....
  6. kent, thats a w.c.j. label, right? the lp contains to personel or location info....? is this early eddie?
  7. yea, who did finally knock JOS off the top?
  8. to further that point: how do you explain the clare fisher????
  9. who cares, jazz polls are completely phony. the inflated #'s between the #1 and 2 spot- look at that. jimmy smith is not nearly as good as 1/2 of that list
  10. what other label are you referring to? would of it been more of a funk/commerical record the likes of which blue note got into w/ blackbyrd, etc....
  11. okay you guys, i guess ill fight fire with fire over here: if someone just CALLS me this weekend and plays me 3 min clips of just the blue mitchell solos, from his last to BNs over the phone, if someone steps up, to bring balence to the sun-equation, then all you aging middle aged men can revel in the awesomeness that is this myspace pic i found of my hottest friend, standing next to, oh? who now? who is she standing next to, at her waistlength there, who's that now? Does anyone know who that is chillin' with her right there? Is that someone we should know about? and BTW i have NO idea where this pic is from that is certainly not my copies of those covers, but whoever it is its prob. someone i preached the word of bjp to initially anyways
  12. listen guys, i love u guys, but you guys shouldn't just listen to every "classic jazz artist" that made albums just because they were in the era:: i like the 70s but i dont listen to Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show. I ** have** to listen to c.c because, as u pointed out, is on some Blue Mitchell albums. I still respect B.M or duke pearson or whomever selected C.C. for this record date, but :::: you guys would highly criticize B.m's post BN career but you guys would just eat up all the chick corea you can get your hands on (elektric band notwithstanding) here are some chewy-approved artists that you can listen to as a replacement for c.c.: -James Spaulding -Gene Harris post 3-sounds solo albums -Yma Sumac -Dave Pell Octet + their diverse humongus lp catalogue some which is on RCA victor but most which is on private pressing dave pell labels covereing many different aspects of music, applied in the w.c.j. style. -The Power Station -Earl Hines (and u guys listen to chick corea! =lol) -The Music of Amhed Abdul Malik -Rimsky-Korsakov -Cameo and Master Higgins and Phil Collins
  13. the most fucked up thing of all is BJP was contracted to Bluenote thru 1976 but never recorded for em after 69 cause he was totally pissed off at them. let us discuss this point, shall we?
  14. corea was worse BEFORE he sold out-- at least after he sold out you could snap your fingers to it......
  15. chick corea: a complete fraud. the fact he was on a donald byrd record sickens me
  16. i just got Funcktion junction from 1976 (RCA) for .99 cents, now although you guys would say the tunes are lame, and i somewhat can agree, HAROLD LAND FUNKS HIS ASS OFF ON IT. his solos are full of the soul he always put into his work through the years. i was listening to his solo on the 1st track last night, and i was just all: oh my god. yes, the overall funk isn't as fusion-ey as most of you guys like, but harold land rules on it PS: chewy REALLY REALLY REALLY wants copies of the last to Blue Mitchell Blue Notes-- I mean really really bad. please contact chewy i will pay or mail blank cds or whatever you want
  17. i have 1 lp of material wher ethey no klacktockcovosustruse- i didnt know there was more stuff? is it the exact same perosnel. no dave pike? i have this lp and its neighbour lp in my wcj pile is a paul bley on GNP
  18. ive seen a chess 2fer w/ i think signif. + an oliver nelson date-- i want the double lou 2fer too--- NOW I ALWAYS PERCEIVED THESE LPS AS SCREWING BJP OVER w/ LITTLE SPACE FOR ORGAN SOLOS--- is this truly the case or does he get to take short solos-- on what % of the songs?
  19. wait the book isnt out till october???
  20. thanks ill look for the hayes::: hey you guys hey you guys i saw this one: gary bartz and eddie jefferson in 1987, live, + some singer, and they did a coltrane song and they did some blues and also bebop songs: gary bartz was KILLIN on it but i didnt get it cause it had all these stupid vocals, a la al jaraeu. all i can take of a.j. is about seventy-two seconds worth (aka: the intro to "moonlighting") and thats about it. he also ruined a jr montrose cd i wanted once-- live on fresh sound records
  21. i havent heard any of those- ive heard music is my sancturary and nu ju ju street songs and like 1 other or so--- i wanna hear some crazy modern gary bartz bebop from the 90s or something?> does anyone have any bootlegs of him with the "SPHERE" group or stuff like that? thats what i want is some modern bebop gary
  22. chuck chuck chuck chuck chuck chuck chuck::::::: you mean to tell me El Satrurns were PRESSED BY CHESS manuf.?!??!?!?!?!?!???!??!?!?!??!!?!??!?? i always thought sunny had his own pressing machine in his compund and they would just press records all night and stuff. you mean to tell me all those el saturns were printed out of CHESS??!?!?!? is that really so??!??!?!?!??
  23. the few times ive heard gary bartz play bebop, all i can think is, here is a man who knows his music and the saxophone on such a deep level, that it is just awe inspiring--i have heard a lot of the prestiges and all but i want you guys to give me some reccomendations along the more straight ahead lines-- what albums can i get w/ gary bartz on them? i NEVER see any in the store and i really dont know where to start w/ him. i might be able to get my hands on a copy of ODE TO SUPER but besides that, even including newer more modern albums-- what gary bartz would be easy for me to locate down. also if anyone wished to let me hear some live gary bartz i would be much interested... please assist any way shape or form, i REALLY want to hear some crazy gary bartz!
  24. i would like to see that book, but seattle has no bookstore zoned in my frequented neighborhoods and theres no way im busting my balls going into downton to Borders or barnes/noble. does the book talk about how they made lee do the UA songs cause BN was owned by them or sometjing? also really want to see the 2 new sun ra poetry books- havent got a chance on those yet too
