Refusion: Juniper Bear & Turning Point Reunion
Werf replied to randissimo's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Wonderful night. Great bands, a great, enthusiastic audience. There was a lot of love in that theater. Turning Point sounded just as I remembered and Juniper Bear lived up to the raves I had heard. As Lazaro said, loved the Mach/Randy duo to open the music up, with a bit of outre-avantedness. I hope this can happen again! -
I want this, but first I need to spring for the Braxton.

Does anyone recall this science fiction story?
Werf replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Larry: I queried at the Asimov's magazine forum, putting up your post and received a reply from anthology editor Rich Horton: "Konrad Gaertner identifies it (on rec.arts.sf.written). It is an Isaac Asimov story, "Ideas Die Hard". First appeared in Galaxy, October 1957. pages: 1" So it was Isaac! -
Not sure how serious you are (and it doesn't really matter, as this is subjective, and I have no strong position on the matter), but coincidentally I happened to watch some of the Beatles Anthology documentary on Youtube last night, and was really struck by how UNswinging the Stones' performance was on "I wanna be your man", as compared to the Beatles. Nothing to base broad judgements upon, but I couldn't help noticing the stark difference with the clips played one after the other. I was kind of serious, based on recent listens to the early Stones catalog on Abko...I think why is because of Charlie Watts, as opposed to Ringo Starr.

The Stones swing, but the Beatles SING!

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Werf replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Art Pepper Select, beautiful stuff. Louis Armstrong Complete Deccas 35-46, man this stuff just keeps getting better. -
Dammit, I wanted that Art Pepper. Move it or lose it I guess.

Please offer 2X shirts for us fat fans.

I voted other because I'm hear to learn about jazz, talk about music in general, support Organissimo, and look at boobies on old record jackets.

Louis Armstrong Mosaic planned with his 1935-1946 Decca sides
Werf replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I've been loving this set. Disc 1 is in perpetual rotation. The first weekend I sat and listened to the entire box three nights in a row. Since then I've been spinning at least one disc per night. My intro to the Decca material, wonderful stuff. -
I did the Buy Early Get Now and have been enjoying the two advance download tracks. Sounds like another great lp, just like the last three. Mark Ibold on bass! SY still sound fresh to my ears after all these years.

Happy Birfday, man! Drink a beer!

Disk two this morning. This is really good stuff. It's either this or the Braxton for my next purchase. -

Got word that mine shipped today. Last Mosaic made to me in three days, so Saturday night will be ringing with that trumpet and growling with that voice. Can't wait. On the recommendation from this thread I picked up Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man and have been digging the hell out of it. I've had the Hot 5s/7s for years, but none of the other Columbias. It's going to be a summer of Satchel Mouth for me. -

Man, it would be beautiful if it ships early enough so those who pre-ordered get it by the 12th. I'm ready for this box now. -
Happy Birfday, man! Thanks for the Ella last night...

Tomorrow morning I'm buying records at Vertigo Music at 11am. I'm eager to snag special Record Store Day releases Pavement LIVE lp and Guided by Voices HOLD ON HOPE ep, and I've already got a stack of jazz CDs on hold, including WAY OUT WEST, some Art Tatum, Nat Adderly, Horace Silver, and Louis Armstrong. http://www.recordstoreday.com/Home

Gene Ammons tonight on Jazz From Blue Lake, 4-14-09
Werf replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
I missed the Rudolph/Jones broadcast but was at Hugo's, where they tranced me out. Loved all that Ammons last night, man, especially the Stitt related stuff, and the tracks with daddy Albert. -

I drink beer tonight and listen. Nice Herbie last night. -
Should be cool. Show was great last night at Mexicains sans Frontiers. Two sets that displayed some tightly controlled, but loosely conveyed musical conversation between Rudolf and Jones. Plenty of a telepathic interplay. Idiomatically non-jazz, yet improvisationally in the spirit. The audience loved it, including me.

I usually prefer the lineups at the Chicago fest, for their variety and the inclusion of the so-called avante-garde. Plus, the plethora of after hours jam sessions at the clubs is the real strong meat.

I got my copy of Groovadelphia!
Werf replied to Dan Gould's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Groovadelphia will played in its entirety during the 9pm hour of jazz on WGVU tonight... tasty, grooovy, soul stirrin', slinky, wiggy, right on. -
10:98 approximate list price, at least at CD Universe. I'll be picking up several of these, staring with Gnu High.

After one spin + drinking, I greatly enjoyed. I'm going to listen to this drunk, high, and even sober.
