Basho Matsuo, Shiki Masaoka, Issa Kobayashi (haikuists) are just a few of my favs. but lately i've been involved with an internet group that occasionally writs 'Renku' which is linked Haiku that many people write together. as for traditional poetry, i dig Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Charles Bukowski, Patti Smith et.al.

2 years ago my weight was 325+ pounds. at 5'8" tall i was a great big fat MF. tho i had been a powerlifter for many years, i was FAT. i felt crappy all of the time, had no energy, and had trouble keeping up with my then 2 year old daughter. i knew i had to change. so over the next year or so i read everything i could about weight loss, food, health and slowly began changing my diet. i cut out processed carbs (most bread, snack items) and cut out red meat and dairy. i lost some weight, and felt better. then i got serious. i started eating organic veggies and fruit. free range chicken (when it was available) or chicken that was antibiotic and hormone free. same for red meat (for the kids and wife). so, i'm down to 220 lbs, my cholesterol went from 265 to 145. my first goal was to get to 225 pounds. my new goal is 190. last time i weighed 190 pounds i had a 32 inch waist. the one big change was this: i no longer live to eat. i now eat to live. going out to eat brings challenges. i usually ask if they have some fresh veggies they could steam or saute in a little olive oil served on a bed of fresh spinach. or i'll have a spinach salad. there is usually something on the menue that i will eat. i make little comprimises, but very little. a typical day for me: breakfast-a little brown rice, pinto beans, veggies, sauted in olive oil. lunch-fruit, fresh spinach, carrots, broccoli with olive oil/balsamic vinegar dinner-fruit, almonds, sunflower seeds, hummus (home made). i eat my big meal for breakfast usually, sometimes i switch breakfast and lunch. dinner is always light. i snack on almonds, sunflower seeds and pistachios (trader joe's habanero ) or dried fruit. i don't count calories or watch my fat intake, but the fat i eat is mono or poly unsaturated and high in omega-3's and 6's. i hit the streets walking or use the treadmill. if i want ice cream i have either Soy Deams or Rice Dreams. i eat a little chicken, or fish occasionally. sometimes i'll eat a piece of beef jerky. i haven't eaten at a fast food joint on well over a year, but i have nicked a french fry or two from the kids. i refuse to eat: white bread, or bread that has had all the fiber destroyed. anything that contains 'Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil'. dairy soda my big vice: cigars.

i'll proly pass on this one, until it turns up at the used place i frequent. i'm waiting for the Let It Be DVD! i have a copy on VHS, but it's wearing out....fast.

i was never a fan until i saw him on a Joni Mitchell Tribute TV show a while ago. he did an amazing version of Woodstock.

my now 4 year old daughter never cared for classical. she's kind of iffy about jazz if there is no singing, so Anita O'Day gets lots of airplay. she's always liked Jerry Garcia/Dave Grisman duets, loves Santana and Marvin Gaye.

i didn't care for disco at the time (i was a hardcore punk rocker) but i had every Chic record. the first album of Bowie's that i ever liked or listened to was Let's Dance.

hmmm, never had cat. dog's pretty good tho. i chill out in the frozen food section of the grocery store.

one of my fav non-jazz drummers passed away from cancer, G*D Bless him. here's a cut and past from billboard dot com: Veteran Drummer Tony Thompson Dies Drummer Tony Thompson, who died in an Encino, Calif., hospital yesterday (Nov. 12), proved his freewheeling musical approach at his first audition for Chic, according to producer-guitarist Nile Rodgers, Thompson's longtime partner in the funk-disco group. "We were playing a simple R&B tune, but his approach was like the Mahavishnu Orchestra," Rodgers recalls to Billboard.com with a laugh. "He threw in everything but the kitchen sink." Thompson -- who distinguished himself as a top session drummer on numerous '70s and '80s R&B and rock hits -- had been suffering from renal cell cancer, and underwent surgery earlier this year. He died three days before his 49th birthday. Born in New York in 1954, Thompson got his start with the R&B group LaBelle. In 1977, he took the drum chair in Chic, which scored the No. 1 R&B hits "Le Freak" and "Good Times." The signature lick from the latter song became a rhythmic linchpin in Grandmaster Flash's groundbreaking 1981 rap single "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel." After Chic dissolved in 1981, Thompson often worked on producer Rodgers' sessions. One of the most memorable was for David Bowie's 1983 album "Let's Dance." Rodgers recalls that Thompson and former Chic bassist Bernard Edwards were called in to work on a couple of tracks, and nailed the takes within 15 minutes. "That kind of virtuosity and that kind of musicality was the essence of what Tony did," Rodgers says. Thompson also played behind artists as diverse as Madonna (on "Like a Virgin"), Mick Jagger (on the solo album "She's the Boss"), Debbie Harry, Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, Jody Watley, Duran Duran and Robert Palmer. In 1985, Thompson teamed up with Palmer and Duran Duran's John and Andy Taylor in the rock unit the Power Station. The group's self-titled album contained two top-10 hits, "Some Like It Hot" and the T. Rex cover "Get It On (Bang a Gong)." The same year, Thompson joined surviving Led Zeppelin members Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, along with second drummer Phil Collins, for a semi-Zeppelin reunion at the star-studded Live Aid concert. Says Rodgers, "How many people can fill [the late Zeppelin drummer] John Bonham's shoes?" There was talk that Thompson would take Bonham's seat in a reformed Led Zeppelin, but recording sessions came to a halt after the drummer was involved in a serious car accident in 1986. He worked with decreasing frequency in the '90s. Rodgers believes that Thompson, who he describes as "the loudest drummer I ever worked with," may have suffered severe hearing loss. Recalling a session for the 1993 Jimi Hendrix tribute "Stone Free," the producer says, "I remember playing with him and realizing, 'Oh my God, it's a different guy.'" FWIW-i only buy free-range poultry, and hormone/antibiotic free meats. as far as fruits/veggies, i buy organic. it is more expensive, but i feel it is well worth the extra cost. and IMO it tastes better.

i certainly hope he's being supported and sponsored with Gov't (taxpayers) $$$.
