  1. Highness -- thanks for that response. And wasn't Arthur Schnitzler Austrian as well. A big fan of Bernhard. For more on Uwe Johnson, see: http://www.suhrkamp.de/autoren/johnson/johnsonbio.htm Sadly, something of a forgotten writer here in "the West", but his novels -- I'm an especially big fan of THE THIRD BOOK ABOUT ACHIM -- are almost forbiddingly complex (ala Butor, Or McElroy).
  2. Seems like quite a few Germans/ Austrians have one the Nobel... Boll, Grass, Hesse. Is her German even more idiosyncratic than that of Uwe Johnson or Arno Schmidt?
  3. The latest laureate... http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/europe/10/07...ture/index.html
  4. Actually was lucky enough to see the Takács Quartet essay number 4 in performance earlier this year. Pretty astounding, but I though they did an even better job with Beethoven's 15th String Quartet (In A Minor, Opus 132).

    Ron Burton

The Burton - Michael Marcus date may be more up your alley... http://www.justin-time.com/works/JUST1562/
  6. AFAIK, THE COOL WORLD soundtrack is still available on CD. Worth picking up. Three OJCs that I think fit the mode of the original request... Gil Melle, GIL'S GUESTS (which include Art Farmer, Kenny Dorham, Julius Watkins, and Hal McKusick) Duane Tatro, JAZZ FOR MODERNS (includes the original "version" of "Maybe Next Year", one of the stand-out tracks from Art Pepper's SMACK-UP LP) Oliver Nelson, NOCTURNE
  7. Check the date again on this one. That must be Brookmeyer's Bicentennial shirt.
  8. There's a great version of "PLease Send Me Someone To Love" by Frank Lowe on VISION BLUE.
  9. "Made from REAL paint thinner!"
  10. Re: Zeppo... In GROUCHO, HARPO, CHICO, AND SOMETIMES ZEPPO : A HISTORY OF THE MARX BROTHERS AND A SATIRE ON THE REST OF THE WORLD -- still for my $$ the best book on Minnie's boys -- author Joe Adamson recounts that Zeppo could be relied upon to sub for Groucho on occasion during the looooong stage run of THE COCONUTS (I believe) and that audiences would be none the wiser.
  11. I see they are selling a DVD of SWEET LOVE BITTER. Been waiting to see that film for a looooooooooooong time...
  12. I voted for Walt. In my estimation, his music from the 60's captures the zeitgeist of that decade better than any of the other vibists' in this poll. In this respect, I consider Dickerson to be the "Trane of the vibes". If that does not sound too ridiculous.
  13. Oh yeah... splurge on some Roger Miller while you're at it...
  14. This is not pre-1960 (1962 to be exact), but it is a masterpiece of it's kind...
  15. Not to justify FF's actions, but I think we have to relaize that serious cultural differences may be a factor in this sorry episode. Great pic of slugger Jeff Burroughs up above, BTW.
  16. "1958: ANDY WARHOL'S MOTHER WINS A GRAPHIC DESIGN AWARD. Warhol's mother often did the lettering for his designs. Her lettering on the cover of a Louis Hardin album, The Story of Moondog, won an award from the American Institute of Graphic Arts as "Andy Warhol's mother". The writing had been rearranged graphically by Warhol for the cover. (AWM58)" (http://www.warholstars.org/chron/192862.html) This cover is reproduced in the booklet to the OJC CD MORE MOONDOG / THE STORY OF MOONDOG...
  17. Sad to hear it. Interesting player and composer of harmoncally dense stuff, though I never could quite warm to the one release of his I have heard -- THE GIFT on Naxos Jazz. I would certainly welcome other recommendations.
  18. On a related note... Has anyone seen the Wolf DVD? Opinions?

    Ron Burton

aka Rahn Burton. Has recently played organ with multi-reedman Michael Marcus, and has recorded at least one trio session under his own name for the DIW label...

  23. I wondered what George was up to these days...
  24. Didn't Caleb Carr -- the author of THE ALIENIST -- write the screenplay for this? Would love to see Schrader's film, given his interest in "transcendental film style". Worst news of all? Oh well.
  25. FWIW, I have had the same experience with this disc. Still not so keen on the bonus tracks, but the material with Mobley especially is superb.
