CREPUSCULE W/ NELLIE
Joe replied to Joe's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Again, my thanks to everyone who has ordered or will be ordering a copy of this book. I am happy to answer any questions any reader may have. In fact, if there's sufficient interest in some sort of formal Q & A or book club-type discussion, do let me know; I'd be more than willing to participate. Best, JM -
I wish him all the happiness in the world. Lord knows he's given me more happiness with his music than I can ever exhaust.

How has this record STILL not been reissued?

Thanks. Vis-a-vis "novels about real people that are clearly novels," this book provided some encouragement, if not direct inspiration. http://www.amazon.com/Ingrid-Caven-Novel-Jean-Jacques-Schuhl/dp/0872864278/ I am hoping to have reviews to share with you all soon. -
William Roper. He's recorded several recitals of solo tuba, but my favorite of the work I've heard from him is to be found on a cooperative release, DOUBLE YELLOW. Rob Blakeslee, Michael Vlatkovich, Brad Dutz. http://www.thankyourecords.com/catalog-2.html Giancarlo Schiaffini's TUBA LIBRE on Random Acoustics is highly recommended. Finally, Don Butterfield...

Kind of Blue - Mostly Other People Do the Killing
Joe replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in New Releases
Some interesting points scored here, IMO. http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2014/10/when-is-a-miles-davis-record-not-jazz/381983/ -
I unaccountably forgot Gil Melle as well. One of my favorites, especially once he hooked up with the still mind-bogglingly Modern-with-a-capital-M Joe Cinderella. Also in the Sun Ra orbit, Pat Patrick. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax-gi9wvUdo Fred Ho arguably made more significant contributions as a bandleader, composer, arranger and activist in the music, but he was no slouch as a player by any means. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jonRiTLRlGs

Davis also made a fine date with Julian Priester for Jazzland. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67a9VODYdtc To call this collection of talent "interesting" strikes as something of an understatement.

Thanks for elaborating! I don't really know his playing all that well yet ... any particular recommendations? Time to dig up that last Mobley rekkid again, I think ... what else? Joe's recs of the KD Time & Jaro (did he hit both of those?) & Steve Lacy Candid are spot-on, and for later work, try Super 80 on Nilva. The Mobley album is great, imo, butnot in the manner of GREAT, if you know what I mean, more like, oh look mommy, that man is pissing on the wall, and it's ok baby, that man is a genius who's just had a hard time, but mommy, it' still piss, yes baby, it is, but it is GOD'S piss, gee mommy are you drunk, don't ask baby, lust keep walking, mommy's got to see this man over here, I'll be right back, mommy, are you having a hard time too, yes baby, Mommy's having a hard time, everybody has hard times, and when we do, we piss on walls sometimes sometimes we get out of room. So if you have an aversion to seeing geniuses piss on walls because they're peoples who are out of rooms, hey, this will NOT be the record for you, ok?. Me, I love it for the blood, which is kinda like piss when it comes out like this. You can also get him on a lot of early Ra things, and Elvin's Illumination! the cat was never "high profile" for whatever reasons, but he was there, and he could play. I forgot the Jaro date, somehow. And the Nilva, which I've never seen or heard. Got to remedy that. http://www.charlesdavis.biz/recordings.html

Ernie Caceres + Sidney Bechet = heaven. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cwDDFygY4Q The aforementioned Smith / Cooper "joint." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs-uRrhyW2A

Nick Brignola! Charles Davis records almost exclusively on tenor these days, but my favorite work by him is on the big horn. Best places t hear him, IMO, are on Kenny Dorham's JAZZ CONTEMPORARY and Steve Lacy's Candid date (THE STRAIGHT HORN OF). Claire Daly is a fine baritone player who can be heard on a couple of her own leader dates as well as records by Joe Forrester / People Like Us. In terms of sheer authoritative sound, there's Leroy "Hog" Cooper, the baritone player in those famous Ray Charles bands. Probably heard to best effect on early recordings by Fathead Newman, Hank Crawford, and that lone Buster Smith record on Atlantic.

3 come to mind; sorry, can't pick just one: Tina Brooks and Johnny Coles (only one recorded meeting, IIRC) - piquant! Steve Lacy and Charles Tyler (one date for Silkheart, right?) - so much tonal color... Monk and Rollins
-
Synchronicity! I just looked up Mark Elliott earlier this week (for other reasons)... looks like he currently lives in Houston, and is still involved in music production somehow.

I would prefer that they tried their hand (and failed) at NEFERTITI. -
I feel like May is almost channeling Wilbur Ware on that trio date... his playing not nearly as sublime as Ware (whose is?), but he shows off a really nice, dark tone, stays out of the way as needed, and holds down the grooves in a way that seems to inspire some of Trane best Prestige-era playing, IMO. But, no, May was never a consistently great or all-that interesting player on his own, at least as far as I have heard. But for this one date I find his playing essential to the succes of the performances. I don't think I've seen any mention of Barre Phillips yet. So, yeah, Barre Phillips. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFnzH5yGbws

Two guys who were consummate pros for their entire careers but both made at least one astonishing record that maybe you did not see coming: Earl May [thanks Paul!], for his contributions to the trio performances on Coltrane's LUSH LIFE, and the always-swinging Joe Comfort for being captured so beautifully by Roy DuNann of Contemporary Records on Gerald Wiggins' RELAX! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bz2eFW8yxJE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgHaSkK13nM Among the avant-free-etc. bassists, Marcello Melis made three great records for Black Saint and can be heard on important recordings made by Enrico Rava and Mario Schiano.

OMG, I was watching some DVD last night, saw the sofa, and said to myself, hey, wait a second....and here we have confirmation. We had a sofa reupholstered about a decade ago by Childress Fabrics in Frisco and were/have been well-pleased by the results. But the online reviews are terrible, and it was a decade ago. They've been in business since 1958)?, so maybe a new generation has taken over and is not handling their business. We've had other furniture repair done by our local Furniture Medic and have been extremely pleased. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Furniture+Medic/@33.063035,-96.792787,15z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0xd54fc9785c3fbb66 Oh yeah! He had a guy we liked but he "disappeared." (You know what I mean.) I trust open flame was not involved. -

I really, really, really want a European audience to have ready access to this book. Alas, Jaded Ibis has no European distributor of which I am aware. The book will be carried by Amazon (after November 1), and I believe that includes the co.uk, .fr etc. Amazon domains. I will coonfirm this, however, and report back. -

Greetings all. Jaded Ibis is now accepting pre-orders of this title. As with any direct purchase from the small (boutique?) record label of your choice, so too with small publishers. The price of the book has gone up a bit more than is ideal (long story there), and I will probably be selling copies myself in the near future. Either way, any support you choose to lend is greatly appreciated. http://bit.ly/1rT6Kxn Thanks; best, JM -
