  1. Chet Baker - In Paris: The Complete 1955-1956 Barclay Sessions (8-CD) This box set had always piqued my interest but not at the prices sellers were asking for it. I wasn't even thinking about the box set or actively looking for it when I happened to come across an Amazon marketplace seller offering a brand new/sealed set for $42.00 delivered!! At that price, I couldn't pass it up! Now I just have to sit tight and wait to see if it's the real deal and ships or if it was a mis-listing of some kind and get a cancellation notice.
  2. The Cannonball Adderley Sextet In New York
  3. I guess you have to decide how far out Earth's atmosphere extends and whether it appears that that is what's represented in the video. (The impact is the big thing.) I didn't question that so much as I did the final bit of information that "evidence" shows this has happened six times before in Earth's history. Regardless, it's a sobering but visually cool video.
  4. Have I posted this before? I seem to remember sending it to a bunch of people. This is a simulation of a huge asteroid hitting the Earth set to the music of Pink Floyd. It's a pretty impressive job but pretty scary to think about. Simulation of huge asteroid hitting Earth.
  5. That little girl "drifting" her little bicycle with training wheels into that parking spot made me laugh out loud.
  6. I don't know why but I think I've gotten more sensitive to heights as I've gotten older. Some of those segments involving heights literally made me a little woozy.
  7. Paps, congratulations on the weight loss. Your's is the path I need to go down. At 6' and 240 lbs, I'd like to lose 40-50 lbs. I've got broad shoulders and fairly muscular arms so looking at me straight on isn't bad but if I turn sideways or take my shirt off it's YIKES! time. A good diet/calorie intake is at least 80% of the battle. My weaknesses are Chinese food/buffets, beef burritos with rice and beans, pizza, salty snacks. I really like spicy and flavorful foods so eating the "right stuff" is kind of boring to me and my biggest challenge in trying to make changes. I've been thinking about making another go at it. Perfect time huh? Right around the holidays. I'd be interested in hearing what a typical day of food would be for you. Are you eating 3 times a day or do you work snacks in there as well? I know that only 1500 calories a day adds up pretty fast.
  8. Well, we’re several weeks into the new TV season and like any other, there’s the good, the bad and the ugly. Here’s my early season report card for the shows that I have been watching. Shows I don’t want to miss: Detroit 1-8-7 I like the characters (though I have some reservations about the new father/rookie cop) and I think this show is well done. I look forward to seeing this show when the newness wears off and the actors settle more into their characters. My wife’s a CSI fan (all incarnations) so I watch them because she does but I like Detroit 1-8-7 better than them all. Fringe Parallel universes with characters moving between and/or stuck in one or the other keeps me looking forward to where they are going with this story. Crime, science fiction, humor, action, this show has a little bit of everything. Breaking Bad We have to wait until March to see what’s going on with our wayward friends Jesse and Walt. They both won well-deserved Emmys for their roles this last season. (Cranston making it a three-peat!) What a season ending show they left us with!! This show is very well acted and engrossing from the start. I’m really looking forward to the new season. Shows I’ll try and catch each week but won’t set the recorder if I have to miss it: Hawaii 5-O I find it to be a bit too cowboy at times and it can be clichéd at times but what cop show isn’t? I find the show to be entertaining and have enjoyed what I’ve seen so far. From what I’ve read, it’s one of the most popular new shows. I enjoy what Scott Caan brings to the show. I was a bit surprised at how short he is. It took me a while to figure out where I saw the actress who plays Kono before. (Battlestar Galactica) Big Bang Theory Another show my wife likes to watch but I’ve come to enjoy it as well. It’s usually pretty funny. Shows where I can take them or leave them: Glee Another show favored by my wife so I watch as well. Is there a plot or story line to this show or is it (becoming) a vehicle for musical performances which generate a lot of revenue through tours, CDs and downloads? Performances run the whole spectrum from cringe-worthy to quite excellent. The most recent episode where the characters did duets had a couple of good performances. (The fake band/musicians notwithstanding.) The two girls who did “River Deep, Mountain High” just killed. I really dug the harmonies and they sounded great together in unison. The mixed duet of “Come On Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again” was very nice channeling the performance by Judy Garland and Barbara Streisand. (Both are on YouTube) That Lea Michelle has a fantastic voice. (based on this and other performances I've seen) She’s not so much a pop singer but she should be able to make a fine career for herself on Broadway if she chooses. Sue, the Jane Lynch character is intolerable with her constant spewing of bile. It gets old very quickly. River Deep, Mountain High Come On Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again Community I only watch it because my wife watches it. To me, it’s OK at best. I seem to have some sort of negative biological/chemical reaction to Chevy Chase. I don’t think he is funny at all and I just can’t stand him. It's kind of odd because it goes beyond just not caring for him. I confess that I get these feelings of anger and hatred that seem to rise up involuntarily whenever I see him. The Office Very disappointing so far, I think it’s going off the rails. If it’s getting this bad with Steve Carrell still on board I can’t imagine how it’s possibly going to fare any better without him if they continue the show. Pam and Jim aren’t nearly as interesting now that they are married and have a child. I think this show is circling the drain. 30-Rock I’m not yet disappointed in the season but I’m not especially impressed either. I hated the gimmick “live” show, it throws off the whole rhythm and feel of the show. I give it a “meh”.
  9. Don Friedman - Flashback $2.99 at Newbury on Amazon.
  10. Though it wasn't death that ended their recording careers, I would have liked to have heard more from Tina Brooks and Jimmy Woods.
  11. I saw Secretariat today and really enjoyed it. Even though I knew what was going to happen, it was still exciting to watch. It's an inspiring, uplifting movie that's worth checking out.
  12. At that price, I'd definitely recommend Don Sleet - Members Only. Also worth checking out, Phil Woods - Pairing Off, Don wilkerson - Texas Tornado.
  13. I love Scrubs too. The first 4 seasons, that is. I purchased the first 4 seasons on DVD but I couldn't bring myself to purchase the 5th. Some of the 5th season was OK but that was the season the show quickly went off the rails for me. I don't know if they ran out of ideas, lost key writers or maybe it was just the characters starting to come into their own, becoming doctors, getting married, having babies, etc. The show became painfully unfunny and unwatchable. The 5th season is where they jumped the shark and they should have let it pass away peacefully rather than put it on life support for 4 more years. I'll enjoy the first 4 seasons and pretend that the rest didn't happen.
  14. Branford Marsalis - Eternal Roy Hargrove - With The Tenors Of Our Time
  15. I'd agree with you given what I've seen so far. Hawaii 5-O was entertaining and worth watching.I saw The Office last night and was disappointed. I found it to be pretty forced, contrived and out of sync with its usual vibe. I enjoy the show so I hope it doesn't go off the rails. I have serious doubts that it will be worth watching without Steve Carell.
  16. It was mine. I revisited this thread to find that my post and what I'm guessing was a colorful and barbed response were deleted. Mr. Nessa opened a door and I merely pointed out a hard truth. I'm sorry if I offended the sensitivities of those who might have read it but I thought it was a fair observation though apparently not well received.
  17. I watched Detroit 1-8-7 as well and thought that it looked promising enough to make me want to follow it for a while to see how it develops. I thought it was done pretty well, especially for a pilot show which often requires a certain amount of grace and forgiveness. I like that it's gritty and not populated with a bunch of people who look and dress like models. (i.e. it has "real" people) The rookie cop stuff was bordering on annoying but I thought it was hilarious when the guy he chased and hand-cuffed to the children's play gym went running off with a slide cuffed to his wrist when the rookie cop wasn't paying enough attention. I thought Michael Imperioli was pretty strong in his role.
  18. So in all honesty, what best serves the jazz community? That the documentary was done or that it had never been done?
  19. Hey, just like the Fresh Sound and Lone Hill (etc.) buyers will be paying "royalties" to them rather than the original artist.
  20. I just finished watching Happy Town on Hulu before it disappeared. I'm really disappointed that this show was cancelled. It only lasted 8 episodes. It wasn't exactly a "can't miss" show but it deserved a better following than what it got before it was cancelled. I want to know what was going on and what happened in Haplan, MN! Now all I can do is hang there and wonder. (RIP Happy Town, Flash Forward, Journeyman, Firefly and the many others who had such short lives.)
  21. Art Pepper - The Complete Galaxy Recordings Outstanding stuff!
  22. It absolutely infuriates me that the Leonardo da Vinci estate won't be making any money off of this!!
  23. Thanks for that little piece of information. Now I'm perturbed as well.
