I see it this way: It was Gus who gave the order to warn Hank. This gives Hank a better chance against the twins which is ultimately good for Gus any way you look at it. A)Hank and the twins kill each other. Win-win. B)Hank manages to kill the twins and get out unscathed. Unlikely, but then the twins are gone and Hank can be dealt with later. C)Both are heavily injured and easier to deal with down the road. As it happened, one twin dead, the other in ICU and easy to stealth-murder, Hank hanging by a thread. Gus is feeling good. Also, clearly Gus banked on the unprecedented attempt on a DEA-agent's life on American soil to cause a ton of shit to rain down on his Mexican contact, who had become troublesome. My questing is, what if Walter becomes perceived by Gus as a liability? Not good for Walt. Your theory about how things went down is probably a good one. However things were to shake out, it was going to be beneficial to Gus and he'd deal with whatever was left over from the situation after the fact. Re: Walt being seen as a liability. Gus isn't stupid and I think he already sees Walt as a calculated risk. Walt reinforced that when he rejected Gale and replaced him with Jesse and when he was caught being less than forthcoming about his brother-in-law being a DEA agent and had to apologize when Gus shows up at the hospital. The balance between Walt being a liability and him being too profitable to give up for the time being is already precarious.

Re: earlier posts. Why would anyone criticize any kind of effort to break up a no-hitter? It shouldn't matter whether it's a 1-run game or a 10-run game. What's a team supposed to do, just lay down and let it happen? Make the pitcher earn it and preserve what a great accomplishment it is without cheapening it. What team wants to say that they couldn't get a hit off a pitcher? If I were coaching, I would want my players to get a hit no matter how it came about or no matter how far behind we might be. I'd be ticked off if they didn't do everything within their power to get at least 1 hit.

The latest episode of "Breaking Bad" was another excellent one. It looks like Gus is making the power grab. That would seem to signal that Walt's deal to work for "only" 3 months is probably going to turn into something lasting much longer. They're not going to want to give up that revenue source. I still can't figure out who might have warned Hank that the two brothers were about to kill him. If it came from Gus' camp, why would they want Hank alive? Were they banking on him killing the brothers? Could they possibly be banking on Hank not turning in Walt if/when he finds out about Walt's cooking and possibly getting a hold on someone who's in law enforcement? I thought it might have been his former partner but he hasn't been acting like it might have been him.

The Twins are off to a great start and just swept the Tigers in our last series. I'm looking forward to see how they match up against the Yankees in the weekend series. They always seem to have our number so it will be interesting to see how it shakes out this season with what (so far) appears to be a strong Twins team.

A lot of people seem to think it was Mike, the PI/fixer guy. On orders from either Gus or Saul. But why would Gus sic the twins on Hank, then warn Hank at the last minute? He wants Hank and the twins to kill each other? I'm not sure. I like the theory that whoever made the call that it came as a result of orders from Gus. The brothers were a definite threat to his interests and were a thorn in his side. Hank was a threat as well and if he and the brothers were to kill each other, it would take care of those threats quite nicely.

Missed it Sunday but watched the latest "Breaking Bad" on On Demand. It was another good one. Who was it who called Hank warning him there were two men coming to kill him?

Newbury bargain thread (and bargains in general)
mikelz777 replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I think the shipping charges are built into the Amazon "front-end"/store. half.com is different in that the multi-item, discounted shipping is built-in. I s'pose that keeps some sellers away. I agree with you. I think that Amazon was being less than truthful or at least being a bit evasive when they replied to the earlier poster's query regarding shipping discounts. It's not built in as an option with their selling format. -
Newbury bargain thread (and bargains in general)
mikelz777 replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
It's up to the seller to establish a shipping discount policy? I've purchased hundreds of CDs from Marketplace sellers over the years and not once have I ever encountered one who offered a combined shipping discount. You'd think I'd see one or two over the years who were trying to get come kind of competitive edge. -
You can say that again! More than once during this series I found myself asking, "How long are they going to be able to keep this thread of the story going?" and then they throw in a new spin. Now the cat unknowingly becomes a mouse. Great series!

Add Bert Blyleven. He was talking about it during a recent Twins game.

Do you know what your collection is worth?
mikelz777 replied to mikelz777's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I guess it would be more accurate for me to say that I have over 1100 titles which would translate to many more actual discs. I can't say I purchased any discs for their collectability, it's always been for the music but many become collectables as they go OOP. In that sense, some of these discs are appreciating assets while others probably never will be. If I had to replace my whole collection I'd have a heck of a time finding some titles and if I ever did, they certainly wouldn't come cheap. Of my jazz titles, I'd probably want to replace at least 90% of them. I guess I'd like to know that if some household tragedy ever happened that I'd be getting close to the collections value rather than just a couple of thousand dollars. I guess I'd better check with the insurance guy. -
Do you know what your collection is worth? Determining the worth by scouring the internet for the prevailing price for each disc in a collection would be quite the task and not one that I’d want to undertake. Is there some kind of standard that insurance companies would use in determining the replacement value if one were to lose their collection in a fire or something? I’ve looked for other discussions on this board and the little I did find didn’t reveal much. Just looking at my own collection, I have over 1100 CDs. Even if I were to assign a $10.00 per disc replacement cost (which I think is pretty conservative considering there are box sets and a lot of OOP stuff) we’re looking at at least $11,000.00 in replacement costs! Does anyone have experience with this or know if this is covered under homeowners insurance or know if they place a limit on something like this?

It appears the Mosaic Select recreates the whole of Blue Note's three 1988 editions of The Complete Art Pepper Aladdin Recordings [vols. 1-3]. (The Return Of Art Pepper, Modern Art, and The Art Of Pepper) There appears to be 5 songs in the Select that do not appear in the 3 volumes above, a 2nd version of "What Is This Thing Called Love?", "A Foggy Day", Diane-A-Flow", "Zenobia", and "Angel Eyes". As mentioned above, 4 of these songs appear on "The Artistry Of Pepper". The latter 4 of these songs also appear on a Bill Perkins (w/Richie Kamuca) 2-fer titled, "Just Friends/Tenors Head On". Oddly enough, the left out song, "What Is This Thing Called Love", appears on the Bill Perkins single title release of "Just Friends" with 3 of the mentioned songs but leaves out "Angel Eyes".

Yours is certainly one point of view. Another point of view is that I was providing a service to those who might think that a.) since the set is out-of-print and hard-to-find, that the music is no longer available when it actually is, and b.) believing that the only way to obtain said music was at a premium price when it is also available at a much more managable price for those who want the music but can't afford to spend that kind of money. I won't begrudge anyone for spending whatever they want to on their music. I'm a huge Art Pepper fan and I think everyone should own this music because it's excellent but I wouldn't have been able to spend $150.00 (or $120.00) for a 3-CD set. (I was fortunate to get his brand-new, 16-CD Galaxy box set for less than that.) Then again, people should also be aware that they can still own the music without having to lament over bending or breaking their budget to do so. Good luck to you, I hope you sell it. All you need is one buyer who thinks that that price is right.

Wow! $41+ per disc! What's in this set that's not in the still-easy-to-find "The Return Of Art Pepper", "Modern Art" and "The Art Of Pepper"? 4-5 alternate takes?

I saw my first game at the new Twins Target Field. What a beautiful ball park! They did a fantastic job given it's size and it's small footprint. We had great seats and the Twins thumped the Red Sox 8-0! The Twins are off to a great start. I hope they can carry that momentum late into the season. Regarding the discussion above, I hate the Yankees. I guess it doesn't help that they seem to have our number and beat us regularly. I'll take the Twins' "develop-the-players" two World Series over the entire championship record of the Yankees' "buy-the-best-team-possible" any day. You can't buy heart and soul. (Though given what they just paid Mauer, which is well-deserved by a could-hardly-be nicer-guy, you might wonder.)

Big Sale at Mosaic--3/17/10 through 3/31/10
mikelz777 replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Nicely put. I heard a track on the cable tv jazz station about a week ago.....decided to track down a copy of the cd ....then discovered that a sealed one's been sitting here for about 3+ yrs. How does that Almond Joy/Mounds song go again? 'Sometime's you feel like a...' I've done the same thing. Sometimes I'll spend weeks listening to samples and searching for CDs but not actually buy for a couple of months and by that time, I've forgotten whether I was just looking at a CD or whether I actually bought it. That's how I ended up with 2 copies of Jackie McLean's "Destination Out" as well as 2 or 3 others I already owned. :blush2: -

Isn't that the truth? It seems like it's much more exciting for me to explore for new music, find a good deal on the ones I want and then eagerly anticipate receiving them in the mail. Thankfully, I've been hitting the wall on new music. I've been finding it difficult to find new things I like enough to bother spending money on them. Of the last 3 bargain buys I've made, I liked one a lot, was so-so on on the second and the third I didn't really like at all. Maybe I'm finally to the point where I can stop buying and start rediscovering things I already own. Ready to sell those three $24 Bill Evans box sets already? I haven't even finished listening to them yet! I'm only through the 4th or 5th disc of the Fantasy set. I was eye-balling that Consecration set when I saw it at a decent price and then I realized I already have 39 discs worth of Bill Evans which represents even more than that in individual releases. That's when I decided I didn't really need any more of his stuff and would have a hard enough time to listen to all that I do have. Using this approach has helped me stave off a lot of buys lately. -

Problem with advanced functions when posting

I have internet explorer as well. Do I need an updated version or have to tool around with it a bit? Another weird thing that has been happening is like Jim A., the admin's post above. I see the post and then there is black space that takes up about 3/4ths of the entire page. I think it just happens with the admin's posts but I have to scroll through about 3/4ths of blank page to get to the next post. -

Since the site was updated, it's been jenk for me too. I don't have problems with posting images or using emoticons but I have other issues. The box where you type text or post images is split horizontally across the middle by the tool bar. If the post is more than 6 or 7 lines worth of space, the cursor moves into the tool bar area and you can't see if or what you are typing. If you have a post of 6 to 7 lines worth of space and you need to edit it, you can't see any of the post that extends into the tool bar area and there seems to be no way to move the tool bar, scroll so you can see the whole post or expand the text area so you can see the entire post at once. It's a real pain. It's almost easier to type the post on Word, copy it and then paste it into the text box for the post. This is by no means an "improvement" for me. (I went back to try and edit the post and the top 2 lines are cut off and there is no way to scroll. When I hit the "use full editor" button, the tool bar appears through the middle and the bottom half of the post is hidden by the tool bar.) -
