  1. Here are 11 and 12 year old kids playing Billy Cobham's "Red Baron". The 12 year old on drums looks and sounds like he's been drumming for 20 years, he's so relaxed, loose and natural. I wish they had turned up the volume on the other kid's bass, it's difficult to hear him clearly but what I could hear shows he knows what he's doing. It's pretty impressive that they would show such musical maturity at this age. https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=697993350279332&fref=nf
  2. Here's one of the latest sensations on sax. You're welcome.... https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=355729281262610&fref=nf
  3. I'm sure having the starting QB for the Rams being taken out of the game for an injury was a contributing factor to the outcome but I don't want to take that away from the Vikings, their defense had an "A" game yesterday.
  4. The Vikes showed some nice defense in a dominating win against the Rams. I'm certain the Pats will be putting them to the test next week.
  5. I'm interested in recommendations for albums or compilations that have a noir-ish or midnight jazz vibe. Something that has the same vibe as Kind Of Blue or like Concierto De Aranjuez from Jim Hall's Concierto album. I'd like it if the entire album or compilation held that low key vibe rather than just appear in a couple of songs mixed in with more upbeat songs. Cool, moody, dreamy, rainy day mellow... Do you have any recommendations?

  7. I have the following box sets for sale. All are in excellent to like new condition except where noted. Prices include delivery CONUS. John Coltrane - Impulse Albums 1 (5-CD) $18.00 John Coltrane - Impulse Albums 2 (5-CD) $26.00 Bud Powell - Tempus Fugue-It (4-CD) $10.00 Ray Charles: The Complete Country & Western Recordings 1959-1986 (4-CD) $63.00 SOLD Hank Mobley - The Complete Blue Note Hank Mobley Fifties Sessions (6-CD) $75.00 SOLD The Mobley discs and booklet are excellent/like new. The box is solid but the edge where the box hinged (a terrible design decision) was damaged when the black outer covering tore away from the edge of the box. The box no longer hinges, it works like a conventional box and the black outer covering was glued back onto the edge of the box. It's not unsightly, but it is visible upon examination. I can try and send pics if you are interested but concerned. Please PM me with any questions.
  8. Just for comparisons sake, you can buy 100 good double-edge blades (just a cursory look and I found at least 4 brands) in the $10-$12 range. I change blades each week so 100 blades would last me just about 2 years.
  9. I've been a wet shaver (i.e. brush, cream/soap, double-edged razor) for close to 2 years now. If you are strong willed and stick with one blade, one brush, one razor and one soap or cream, you can indeed save money by going the "old fashioned way" but once you're in, it's hard to stop. You'll want to try different razors and different blades to find a combo that works well for you. Then there's so many soaps and creams you'll want to try both performance and scent-wise. (I just ordered a sampler of 7 shaving soaps of various interesting scents, some with cooling menthol) Wet shaving will also take up more of your time. I could go on and on so if you're interested or curious, I'd be happy to answer any questions. The difference for me between shaving with disposables and wet shaving is that what used to be nuisance and burden to me is now something that I enjoy and actually look forward to. It's kind of a hobby. It's "me time" and pampering yourself a little. I also really like the idea of shaving old-school and keeping the tradition going. My favorite razors are vintage, one from the late 30s and another from the early 60s. I like shaving with a double-edge a lot and don't ever see myself going back to disposables of any kind.
  10. If your heart isn't set on all the extras, the 3 individual original releases are cheap and easy to find.
  11. The original song came out when I was a teenager but I've kept an appreciation for some good funk/soul/rock over the many years. I was reading a book and not really paying attention when the song came on. Once it started up, it made me put my book down!
  12. This is pretty hot! On The Tonight Show last night, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Roots performing a cover of Funkadelic's "Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On." I hope they keep this link alive for a while. Turn the volume way up and check it out! http://www.nbc.com/the-tonight-show/segments/6501
  13. Perhaps it is too simplistic a view but there's just too much there to dismiss the claim as not having substance. Opportunistic and money driven? For certain, but the bands played together at the time, the guitar sounds the same as if it was recorded the same way, the feel and mood are the same and the solo is the same in large part. If or when this goes to court, I don't like Led Zep's chances.
  14. I think they did. Even the sonics of the solo guitar sound similar. It's probably one of those incidents where they heard it, thought it was a nice little bit and said to themselves, "That's a nice bit there but here's what I would have done with it." and it went from there. Had I heard the Spirit song not knowing it preceded Stairway To Heaven, I would have thought they were ripping off Led Zep.
  15. I've always dug this but i couldn't find other releases that really rang my bell.
  16. It looks like a lot of us are on Laurie's mailing list. I'm glad I got my order in before the discount code was pulled. I should have a copy early next week and I'm looking forward to reading it. are there links to these excerpts? Were the excerpts what appears in the left column here? http://lauriepepper.net/
  17. I'm a big Art Pepper fan. I read "Straight Life" a couple of times and think it's one of the best jazz biographies I've read. I own the "Notes From A Jazz Survivor" DVD and Art's CDs dominate my collection as far as the number of discs I own by a particular artist (52), 12 more than the next closest artist. He's my favorite alto player and I'd even put him on the Mt. Rushmore of greatest alto saxophone players of all time. Having said that, I'm still not a fan of the name given to Laurie's label or the title of her latest book though I look forward to reading it. The title of the new book is intentionally provocative so no one should be surprised that it's going to elicit a wide range of responses and a lot of them are probably going to be negative given that title. Laurie herself said that she knew this was going to happen so I'm a bit puzzled by the degree of offense that seems to have been taken. Were I in her circle of influence I would have advised against both label name and book title but she shouldn't assume that a little blow-back is a rejection of the work. I really don't like the name of her label but I like what the label has put out. i don't like the title of the new book but I look forward to reading it and anticipate liking it.
  18. mandatory purchase - another worthy effort from the "best widow in jazz" !! I'll be buying a copy but.......I just wish she could have found a better title for it. I think there was a similar sentiment expressed by some over her choice of "Widow's Taste" as the name of her label. I'm looking forward to reading it, "Straight Life" was one of the best jazz bios I ever read.
  19. Wayne Shorter - Adam's Apple John Wright - South Side Soul Donald Byrd - At The Half Note Café Vols. 1 & 2 John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman
  20. I was pondering the same thing but not to such an extreme degree. I just purchased a couple of the Tasman/Pacific Rim 2 and 3-drawer cabinets and I will continue to store all my discs in their cases. What I'm not sure about is what to do with all of my box sets. Prior to getting the cabinets, I found that I rarely went into my box sets to listen to their contents after the initial listen. I was thinking that maybe they would get more listening time if I were to remove the cases from their boxes and file the discs/cases in the drawers. I have about 15 album-sized box sets, 11 of the "tombstone" sized sets and a handful of slightly over-sized sleeve boxes. If I end up putting the contents of the box sets into the drawers I would have to find a method to store the various sized empty boxes because I wouldn't be able to throw them away. I'd want them for their booklets and want to keep the option open of being able to have the complete box set if I ever wanted to sell them.
