  1. Ray Charles - Pure Genius: Complete Atlantic Recordings 52-59 (7-CD/1 DVD) Ordered it today and I'm really looking forward to giving it a listen. It was a great deal n/s for $39.99 on Amazon Marketplace.
  2. I'm digging The Killing as well and have no qualms at all over the pace of the show. It's so layered and more than once they had me convinced that they were on to the killer only to have the story take yet another twist. As I mentioned before, Mireille Enos as Sarah Linden is excellent in her role and really carries the show. I also really like Joel Kinnaman as her assigned partner, Stephen Holder.
  3. I just finished the last episode of season 1 of The Killing. Wow! A very nice cliff-hanger! This show is nicely layered and has me hooked. I'm really looking forward to the 2-hour season 2 opener. I really like the actress playing Sarah Linden, the lead detective. I think she's really embraced her character described as a, "silent watcher, taking everything in without ever revealing her hand. Outside of work, she's a distance runner, an emotional "lone wolf," and a single mom to whom motherhood doesn't come naturally." The actor playing her shady partner does a very nice job as well.
  4. I'll have to keep Rome and Damages in mind. I'm going to have a go with The Wire first because I have heard a lot of good things about it. I hope the library copy isn't too hacked up. I hate it when they are so scratched up they start to freeze, pixilate and skip. I guess I don't understand how people can be so careless. I have CDs/DVDs I've listened/watched dozens of times that still carry a spotless mirror finish.
  5. I'm one of those "back then" guys. I lost interest in him with "The River". Give me the early, raw and hungry Bruce.
  6. I agree with you on the show's approach on greiving. Very well done. I love being able to watch the episodes of a series back to back over the course of several days rather than over the course of months with the regular broadcast. That's how I had to watch The Sopranos. I don't have HBO and watched it for the first time when the show was already into the 4th or 5th season. I couldn't get those DVD sets from the library fast enough!! I just devoured those shows! There was a lot of demand for the series so sometimes I had to wait a month or more for the next season to become available. The wait was always well worth it. I had to do it the same way with Boardwalk Empire. I can't wait for the 2nd season of that show to come out on DVD so I can request that one from the library and watch the entire season in a couple of days. I'll have to try and find another series I've never seen and get hooked on it. Maybe The Wire? Rome?
  7. I'll watch Community if it is on but I didn't miss it at all when it was on hiatus. I can't stand Chevy Chase. Annie is indeed one of the highlights. I'm watching the first season of The Killing on On Demand. It was one of those shows I was curious about when it first started but I never ended up watching it for whatever reason. I'm enjoying it a lot and really like being able to watch the entire season over the course of several days. This is one show I'm definitely going to keep following. I only have 2-3 shows of the first season left so I'll be caught up when the new season starts in April.
  8. HAL MCKUSICK - Now's The Time (1957-58) - 1995 MCA/GRP release - $4 PM sent.
  9. Are there any fans of the old Dark Shadows series? I remember literally running home from school so I could catch the latest goings-on at Collinwood. I just discovered the trailer for Tim Burton's Dark Shadows movie starring Johnny Depp as Barnabas. Is this for real? It doesn't appear to be in the spirit or tone of the original series at all. From the looks of it, apparently it wasn't intended to be. This looks like a smoking turd to me. YMMV. Dark Shadows trailer.
  10. If I had to choose between the two, I'd choose Pink Floyd with little to no deliberation.
  11. There's a lot of sad country songs out there but this one in pretty dark!
  12. I was saddened to hear the news. I would have been part of their target audience and remember enjoying their show back in the day. I'll echo GA Russell's sentiments, it makes me feel old. I wouldn't be considered Jones' peer age-wise, (I'm younger) but it really hits you when people you've grown up with and those who are within 10-15 years of your age start passing away.
  13. I guess I'm sorry that you feel your life has been so diminished for having watched all or part of the series. I honestly can't understand how anyone who is willing to be honest and objective about the series can come away from it thinking it is such an abomination.
  14. MG, there are two volumes of The Wright Feeling, but you have to contact Wright directly to purchase them. I emailed an associate of his to get Wright's email address, but I never got around to emailing him and the albums have languished on my wishlist. Re: The Wright Feeling, more information please. What's on it? How does it compare with South Side Soul and Mr. Soul? How many discs? Cost? Still available?
  15. I'm a fan of the series and, in my opinion, think it is a tremendous asset to the world of jazz. I never really understood all the vitriol aimed at Marsalis and Crouch. Even though they may have been presented as authorities on the subject by virtue of both being featured as talking heads, I never considered what they had to say as anything more than their particular opinion coming from someone who has had a lot of experience in the field and who had a passion for the subject matter. I can take or leave their opinions and it's as simple as that. I'm not going to condemn the series for it if I happen to disagree with a few things. If there's something else out there that covers jazz on this scope as well or better then I'm not aware of it. I honestly don't think it will ever be equaled or bettered. Of course, that's just my opinion.
  16. Speaking of Keith Jarrett, when is someone going to release Keith Jarrett: The Non-Grunting And Groaning Recordings? I'd buy that no matter who released it.
  17. Getting back to the original question, I think the sound on them is just fine. I own two of them, am pleased with both and would buy more of them if I lacked whatever was contained in them and was interested in the music/artist. In most cases with these sets, I already own most if not all the original releases for those artists I'd be interested in. For the two I own, much of what's in the sets are OOP, hard to find, or only available at a prohibitive cost. For me, it came down to not having the music because it was unobtainable/too expensive or having the music (albeit, no frills) at a very attractive price. Apparently, I'm part of their target audience.
  18. It appears that South Side Soul and Mr. Soul were the only releases on CD of his '60s work. I'm a big fan of both and was wondering if there was anything else "in the can" from the 60's that wasn't released and will we ever see that or any of his other official '60s releases on CD? (Nice 'n' Tasty, Makin' Out, or The Last Amen)
  19. Re: Alcatraz, I like the concept and thought it held promise. For me, it was too formulaic with the "criminal of the week" thing. Maybe I should have given it more time to see what was going on with the disappearance/time travel thing but it just wasn't holding my interest. Maybe I'll have a go with catching up with Fringe if I can find the time. I too am concerned about Breaking Bad fearing its last season will be kind of anti-climactic. Mike is still alive and I'm interested to see how that plays out. I'm not feeling the Jesse/girlfriend/her son story line at all but see it will probably be a catalyst for serious issues between him and Walt. Hank won't stop his pursuit so Jesse and Walt aren't out of the woods yet. I'll stay hopeful and keep my fingers crossed that it will be a great final season.
  20. Funny that you would post this. I was just about to ask if Fringe was worth catching up on. I saw the first 1 or 2 episodes this season and then lost track of it. I was wondering if it would be worth the effort to try and catch up with the rest of the season. I wasn't very impressed with what I saw so far and from the sound of it, maybe I should just let it go. I had high hopes for Alcatraz but abandoned that show about 3 episodes in.
