BMG Music Service Stops Taking New Members December 23, 2008 - Retail By Lou Hau, N.Y. BMG Music Service stopped accepting new members this week, marking the end of the once-ubiquitous "12 for the price of one" offers that the mail-order CD club was known for. A spokesperson for BMG Music Service parent Direct Brands confirmed Tuesday that the music club is no longer accepting new members, although she declined to comment on whether the company plans to shut down the club completely. "We are still very actively engaged with our existing member base and will be making more changes to serve them...more effectively later in 2009," the spokesperson said. The club's former home page bmgmusic.com now greets visitors with an invitation to join Direct Brands' other music service Yourmusic.com, which sells all CDs in its catalog for $6.99 each, but requires members to purchase at least one CD a month. BMG Music Service informed its members earlier in December that it will discontinue its Music Points Program at the end of January. The frequent-buyer program awarded points for each purchase that could be applied toward a free CD. The club said members can continue to redeem existing music points through April 30. In a deal announced in July, Bertelsmann AG sold Direct Group North America, which included BMG Music Service, Columbia House, Book-of-the-Month Club and other direct marketing clubs, to private-investment firm Najafi Companies of Phoenix. Najafi renamed the business Direct Brands. In Bertelsmann's 2007 annual report, which was released in March before the sale of the direct marketing business, the German media conglomerate said it planned to discontinue its CD clubs in 2010 "on account of the slump in the physical music market." The happiest of holidays to all - 2008!
mikelz777 replied to Christiern's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: “ Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” Luke 2:8-14 May Christ bless you and yours this holiday season and the new year to come. Merry Christmas! -
I used the D8E1 code 4 times. I'd try it again but there aren't really any more titles that have enough interest for me even to spend the $2.79 on them. Aggie, I really appreciate your listing of the new titles of interest as they come in. The updates have lead to several excellent buys. It looks like the BMG days are numbered so I hope to keep apprised of any new titles that come in until the very end.

musicians you usually like better on OTHER people's dates...
mikelz777 replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Oscar Peterson - I love OP comping behind another artist and find that I like him more in a supportive role rather than a leadership role. Maybe it's because he's a bit more restrained in a supportive role and doesn't feel the need to go through the piano gymnastics we often hear when he's in the spotlight. To my ears he sounds more relaxed as a sideman and sounds just as impressive as when he's playing hard to show off his chops. -
The new "Pay-It-Forward" Music Giveaway Thread!!!
mikelz777 replied to Parkertown's topic in Offering and Looking For...
This CD is still up for grabs. (USA addresses only please.) (To be paid forward by me, free of charge. PM me if interested.) Bob Scobey's Frisco Band - Direct from San Francisco Review by Scott Yanow This is an enjoyable date of Dixieland, emphasizing familiar warhorses. Trumpeter Bob Scobey is in his usual consistent form and is assisted in the frontline by trombonist Jack Buck and clarinetist Bill Napier. Banjoist Clancy Hayes has six excellent vocals (particularly "Curse of an Aching Heart" and "Travelin' Shoes"), and the spirit and high musicianship overcome the familiar repertoire. AMG rating = 4 out of 5 stars. -

No worries, I can totally understand the disappointment and the frustration. It was an oversight on my part and the mailing restriction should have been noted in my original post. I regret that people may think I'm being unreasonable but once I start shipping overseas, the postage costs double or worse and I have to fill out customs forms which ends up to be a lot more work and expense than it's worth just to rid myself of a CD. Anyway, that's where I'm coming from and I'm sorry that I made anyone unhappy about it. They're certainly within their rights to be unhappy about it and disagree with me. -
The siren song of BMG's "3 free for the price of shipping" code has proven to be too irresistable yet again. At $2.79 per disc I couldn't resist: Enrico Rava / Stefano Bollani - The Third Man Stanley Turrentine - Dearly Beloved Sadao Watanabe - Basie's At Night (2-CD)
-
I think it was an excellent date and it was very refreshing for me to hear Evans in a different context when I had been listening to so much of his trio material. I'd recommend it.

Overspending, yet again. (It's a sickness! ) Ordered or in the mail: On sale at J & R before it goes out of print: Lee Morgan - Live at the Lighthouse (3-CD) To use up a store credit I had: Booker Little - Booker Little 4 and Max Roach (before it goes OOP) Freddie Hubbard - Here To Stay Via BMG's 3 for free (pay shipping) code. I'm to the point where it's difficult to find picks I'm interested in to take advantage of these offers: Maynard Ferguson - Maynard Ferguson Octet Joe Lovano - I'm All For You John Faddis - Teranga Andrés Segovia - Icon: Andrés Segovia (3-CD) Bill Monroe - Anthology (2-CD)
-
Currently in the mail: Charlie Rouse - Yeah! / We Paid Our Dues! I had my eyes on Rouse's "Unsung Hero" for some time when I found this 2-fer which covered the same material and then some for about half the price. I'm glad I discovered it. Mose Allison - Swingin' Machine I dig Mose Allison and was intrigued to hear him in a setting that included horns, a departure from his usual trio. John Lewis & Sacha Distel - Afternoon In Paris This recording includes 3/4ths of the Modern Jazz Quartet. (Lewis, Connie Kay and Percy Heath) Barney Wilen was also a draw for me. Don Wilkerson - The Texas Twister I saw this one mentioned in another discussion. It looks like a pretty interesting lineup with Nat Adderley, Leroy Vinnegar, Sam Jones, Barry Harris and Billy Higgins.
-
I'm going to have to pick up the Lee Morgan Lighthouse set (currently $20.00 at J&R) and the Booker Little 4 and Max Roach which I didn't see on the list but was among those listed in the link from the email I got. I'm trying to keep the buying down so I'll have to limit myself to these for now.

More Sonny Rollins - The Freelance Years madness!

PM sent. -
Just thinking about how to answer this question made me realize I need to get into my Mosaics a bit more. Off the top of my head: Horace Parlan Hank Mobley The Jazz Crusaders Of the Selects: Curtis Amy Carmell Jones Dizzy Reece Some more listening could easily change my picks. The Basie's are outstanding. The Jazztet and the Jazz Messengers are right up there and there's some from West Coasters that I've only heard once.

Cream - Gold Several months ago, I popped into a record store that was totally new to me (somewhat dark, burning insense, eclectic staff dressed in street clothes of their choosing) and they were playing Cream over the sound system while I was there. (Shortly before that I went through a phase of listening to British blues like Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers) Ever since, Cream's sound has been haunting me. One disc in this set contains 21 songs and the 2nd disc contains 8 live performances. Bluesy, British, psychedelic, cheap, in great shape and 3 guys laying down some awesome rock. I couldn't resist.

The new "Pay-It-Forward" Music Giveaway Thread!!!
mikelz777 replied to Parkertown's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I was interested in the Bob Scobey album offered by Mikelz777. Mikelz777 just informed me, that he will not ship outside the US. I was not aware that this thread is for US residents only. Meanwhile I got a PM from someone who is interested in my Ellington set. I will ship the Ellington twofer anyway, so I have one future cd free. I'll take the hit for not being as magnanimous as others here regarding shipping and I've already personally apologized via PM. Just because I am not willing to ship overseas by no means should infer that this thread is for US residents only. I'm certainly not the spokesman or representative for the other members of this board. It was my intent to ship a free CD cheaply via domestic mail and I failed to take into account that the membership of this board is international and that it was possible that one of our international friends might respond and request the CD. It was my oversight, I should have noted the shipping restriction in the origional post and I am sorry. -
I'm defining "kid" as pre-school through about 5th grade. Of course, Dr. Suess was a favorite and I'm certain I've read almost every single one several times. I enjoyed Beverly Cleary's Henry Huggins (and related characters) books as well as several others of hers. I have fond memories of and enjoyed several of Robert McCloskey's books.' ("Make Way For Ducklings", "Homer Price", "Blueberries For Sal") Jean Craighead George's "My Side Of The Mountain" made a huge impression on me and totally captured my imagination. I enjoyed the mystery/thriller series "The Three Investigators" written by various authors. I also really enjoyed John Christopher's science-fiction trilogy, "The City of Gold and Lead", "The White Mountains", and "The Pool of Fire". I've been a life-long reader and just can't fathom when someone doesn't enjoy reading. (It's as unfathomable as a co-worker I once knew who didn't enjoy music. She and her husband drove form Minnesota to Montana and back without listening to music on the radio.) I think giving a child the joy of reading is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. My wife and I read our children books from the time they were tiny infants and both are avid readers today.

The new "Pay-It-Forward" Music Giveaway Thread!!!

No takers? There's no tradional/dixieland fans who'll take a free disc? (Many apologies to our foreign friends but U.S. addresses only please.) Maybe I'll have to choose another to try and inject some life into this thread. Speaking of injecting life into this thread, I just checked posts since the beginning of the year and it looks like there are some who haven't paid forward since claiming a CD. Trane fanatic owes two and cliff englewood and felser each owe one. Apologies to you if you've already put in more than you've claimed.
