There's really not enough volume of traffic to warrant a whole new sub-category and even if there were, there'd still be those who saw it as a great opportunity to get even more exposure by posting auctions in both categories anyway.
It's not that big of deal to me and just seems to me to be a minor inconvenience to those whom it does matter. I agree though that the distinction should be noted in the title of the post.
What's the connection between Lawrence Welk and Blue Oyster Cult?
Am I the only one who sometimes does not get the transitions some people make at all? If the connection is obscure or a non-obvious twist, posters should explain the connection.
I picked up Donald Byrd's "Royal Flush" and "Off To The Races". I dig all the Byrd/Pepper Adams collaborations and these two certainly didn't disappoint. I'm looking forward to "Cat Walk" which is supposedly coming out early next year.
I think I've only ever ordered items that they had in stock with the exception of once. They've come through every time on the in stock items. I had to cancel the other item because they were not able to get it.
Sometimes they have very good prices and I've had very good luck with them. When I'm in the market for something, I'll always check them out.
The Dizzy Gillespie box set gets my vote and will probably be my next purchase.
The Condon Mob box seems to keep calling my name. I have 4 discs of Condon already so I'm wondering if I need more but it keeps calling. Does anyone out there have a set they's let go at a nice price?
Better? It's hard to say because"better" is such a subjective and relative term. Most certainly his later work is as enjoyable as his earlier work. If you don't know his later work well and really love his earlier stuff then you really owe it to yourself to seek out some of the later works noted above. My ultimate favorites among those others and myself have listed are "Chat Baker In Tokyo" and the 3 Prestige Sessions releases (Chet on flugelhorn). There's some wonderful George Coleman in those as well.
On another board, Laurie Pepper talked about being in posession of the tapes for "Blues For The Fisherman" among others and planned on eventually releasing them. I think she's working on releasing Art's last recording at the 1982 Kool Jazz Festival right now which is supposedly slated for later this year. (?)
I've only made it through the first two discs of the Coltrane set and everything has been very enjoyable so far except for the occasional Paul Chambers bowed-bass solo. This one has been waiting for a while because I was still working my way through Dexter Gordon's Prestiges, Donald Byrd's Royal Flush and the Crusader's 2nd Crusade which came before or about the same time as the Coltane did. I haven't even had a chance to look through the book yet but I'm really looking forward to diving into that and the rest of the set over the next week or so.
Count me among the Chet Baker fans, he's one of my favorite trumpeters. I think that he is misjudged in the sense that his name often doesn't come up on the usual lists of trumpet greats although I feel he has well deserved it.
Some of my favorite Chet off the top of my head:
-The Last Great Concert: My Favorite Songs Vol. 1&2
-Chet Baker in Tokyo
-Lonely Star (The Prestige Sessions)
-Stairway To The Stars (The Prestige Sessions)
-On A Misty Night (The Prestige Sessions)
-The Italian Sessions
-Picture of Heath and The Route (with Art Pepper)
-Chet Baker and Crew
