  2. Jazz Noise is great...THE 1988 band live album to get, though it does not even scratch the surface of what this band could do. Unfortunatly, FZ did not relaese some of the best things he ever recorded or performed. This is a shame and I have (or had) a lot of hope that the ZFT would take advantage of what is in the vaults and put out some of the REAL good stuff this particular ensemble played. Or any ensemble really. Still waiting on the Petit and Grand Wazoo recordings!
  3. The great thing for me about this reissue series is that I had never heard these albums before. Aside from All This Useless Beauty the only things I had before were the two greatest hits collections. So after that, everything so far has been a revelation. Eric, my answer to your question would be, get Brutal Youth, as it matches the drive, if not the psirit of his earliest works. It's raw unadulterated and passionate, not unlike When I was Cruel from last year...everything else can be hit or miss.
  4. How funny that you should ask! I just put on disc 3 to listen to the Bass On Top session again well as I don't think it garnered my full attention last time (and it wont this time either...lots to do around the house today). But thats not to say I am not enjoying it. It usually takes me a few weeks to fully digest ONE disk, so now I have to digest 3. In that respects, what I have listened to so far has been great to say the least. One dosen't really get a chance to listen to PC fully placed in the front of the mix, so I am not sure if thats just the Mastering or if he was just recorded that way. It is a good thing to not hear him fully in support, but to hear OTHERS supporting him, which is a nice little balance. Of course PC has surrounded himself with the best sidemen on these sides. As well he should be. For me, PC is the TOP...he's the Bass on Top!
  5. ...and even more importantly, he was also backed by members of the Meters!!! I will NEVER forget Warren Zevon.
  6. Yeah, I had to put on Sneaking Sally when I found out...Hey Julia is cranking right now! RIP
  7. Yeah, I have bordered ont he obsessive at points, but I will stand pat with my 60+ Zappa collection and my growing jazz shelf. I am picking up reissues as much as I can, and still getting rid of stuff slowly. Currently I have upwards around 700 cd's, a stack of vinyls and a huge (tape/cd) bootleg collection, which thankfully I basically stopped about a year ago. I can barely afford this obsession, but there it is. At least I am not a smoker. Packs of cigarettes cost almost FIVE bucks...Each!
  8. Yes, and I do think that the recent Blackhawk recordings show that to a degree that Miles may have started to question what he was seeing, Hearing Ornette and finding out what Trane was doing might have made him re-think his priorities a bit. Now, I love Hank, but it seems aparent that Miles' (real or not) frustrations with him had more to do with his own insecurites than anything Mobes was up to. I mean I love Wayne too, but look at what both men were doing around 61-64 and you see two completely different aproaches. Surrounding himself with youth and drive altered his outlook on his music a bit. Herbie and Tony may have found the music a bit stale, but Miles wasn't ready to completely abandon that music. It took Wayne's entrance (IMHO) to make Miles "See the light" or at least guide him closer to it.
  9. I got a three, and I think about 7 months ago (when I was single) I would have scored a zero About twice a week. I am starting to get complaints, but I always blame it ont he coffee) No. I think so. But that has nothing to do with being "Metrosexual".
  10. Now I know why I never rose above the ranks of the harried sales clerk. These guys had it TOUGH. ME? I have to tag and sticker 12 cartons of Multi-media product per day, 6 of those are dvd that need to be tagged, yet I only have keepers for 2 of those cartons and the space for only one. Somehow I can make all that shit fit...and everything is alpha'd on the shelves! But I do have it easy...I only have to do a minimum of customer service and I get first crack at all the promo copies that come in!
  11. It took me about two minutes to find it, but I finally did and took care of the problem. Thanks Hans. Anyways, I am still only listening to disk one, but this set will be the perfect soundtrack to this paper that I need to write tonight. Actually, the mood of the music fits perfectly with the weather outside today!
  12. Garsh...sorry about this guys! I kept getting an error message when I tried to send this, please ignore all but one of these posts.
  13. Literally...on my doorstep. I just got home for lunch, sat down and heard something hit the pavement outside my window. The Airborne Express guy just tossed the package on my doorstep and then left...didn't knock...nothin'! Lucky I was home or anyone could have grabbed it off my doorstep. Eat? I just wanna sit here and listen, sounds good so far!
  14. Woo-hoo...scored a TWO! Works for me...I think if I scored any less than that I wouldn't be able to look at myself in the mirror. My momma didn't rasie no SLOB!!!
  15. WAIT!!! Stop right there...don't want to read any further!
  16. Can I still be a Mobley completeist if I don't have, and never plan to get Reach Out?

  18. I believe it was a Proper relese from a few years back. It isn't a cutout but a bargain priced double disk set. Looks tasty, but who the hell knows what it sounds like? I haven't heard anything from the Proper label yet, but people seem generally pleased withthe quality of these releases.
  19. That scene spawned my favorite line fromt he show (as well as the Turkey line) "On the air? I AM the air" I also love the scene where the Big Guy uses the cocaine as foot powder! RIP Big Guy!
  20. Yipes!! Sounds like this forum I heard about where these strange people rant on and on about jazz and... HANG ON!!!
  21. Hoo boy, that was quite frightening. At first I thought I got hit with a virus but it wasn't that. Still very strange though, the shaking window thing was the worst of all...I thought I was going down for sure. Glad to see everyone back again and no info appears to be lost.
  22. Why do you have to make a choice? Enjoy both for the music they present. It's difficult to comprehend ones own shift in listening tastes, and while I still do enjoy the Coleman Atlantics, I am finding the Hank BN's are more my taste these days. Not necessarily all of that music, but the Classic BN style of Hard Bop that the Mobley Mosaic holds for me. That being said, Ornette was the person who helped foster my love of jazz, everything else was kind of built around that. So, its not as much a choice as a natural progression.
  23. I would like to fully echo this statement. It was also my first Mosaic, and it pulled my apreciation for Hank's music to the forefront. Previously my most prized was the Ornette Atlantic box, but over the years I am moving more towards the Hank camp, even though there are riches to be found on both sides! That being said, I don't feel a need to get everything Hank ever played on, as I am still on the fence about The Flip. I'll probably end up getting it, not right away but eventually.
  24. I recently picked up Glengarry GlenRoss. I watched the first 20 minutes of it or so the other night and there is as much dialouge in that space of time as some movies have in thier entirety. It got me kind of missing Jack Lemmon as his scenes with Kevin Spacey are pure movie magic!! It also got me thinking of all the good work Ed Harris has done over the years. Can anyone recomend his film Pollock? Anyways, I can't say enough good things about this film...and I haven't even gotten to the REAL good stuff yet.
  25. I hate it!! No, seriously, I will know more when and if I get a promo copy in my hands before next Tuesdays release date!
