SFTNL is my favorite Lee Morgan date. When Billy Higgins died, I played the tittle tune about 5x back to back! The lineup is the virtual Who's Who of Blue Note Jazz IN 1964, that in itself should easily recommend it.
-
To each his own I guess. Personally I think it was his best record in a long time. Trust me. Of course, it is under my considered opinion that anyone who dosen't like Ragged Glory should not be trusted!!!
-
Why these fools didn't backup theese recordings to zip disks or tape drive is beyond me!!
-
Okay then, you may as well call me an asshole too, cuz thats exactly how I feel about these bands! That dosen't mean I won't listen to them of course!!!
-
I don't really think there is a need to call this guy an "asshole" it's just an opinion. You may not like it, but there is a ring of truth to it. Those three bands (I love them still...well Yes not as much as I used to, and ELP not at all...except Karn Evil 9) are the definitive of the overblown 70's rock Dinosaurs. I prefer Krimso over any of them these days. They are still innovative and interesting not to mention long lasting of all the Prog groups. I count myself today as a bigger fan of bands like Can, Brand X, old PG, Beefheart, Roxy, Hammill/VDGG and Henry Cow/Fred Frith/Art Bears then any of the less esoteric 70's pop artists. Sorry I left out Tull, maybe many dont really consider them Prog as such, but I love them as well!!

Yeah, I was hoping for a good review on this..from the outside it looks promising. Hell it's Joe Chambers...wish he'd get some more credit, but hey, thats life, eh?
-
Presumably Cuscuna means that it sucks and will NEVER see the light of day...over his dead body. Any other sessions out there the MC has roundly rejected in such a manner?
-
I don't buy any of the RVG's or any other recent re-issues for the liner notes, I buy them for the music. Most liner notes are hit or miss affairs anyways. Now for the Mosaics, the notes are all part and parcell, commensurate with the the packaging in its entirety. Blumenthal basically keeps his notes hyperbole free, as he is supposed to be championing these releases imho. It just dosen't matter to me, I'll take the music and leave the "new" notes out of it.

It's so rare that anyone knows what the hell I am talking about. Of course I got a chance to see Mr. Hammill in '94 at the QEH in LOndon. I am still bothered by the fact that my roomate wouldn't let me bring along his cassette recorder to the gig. I like the post retirement stuff the most (Godbluff/Still Life/World Record) the most. Guy Evans is a monster drummer!

Wow, I cannot believe everyone dissing the Wilkerson, certainly not among the upper sphere, but it's quality nonetheless. anyways, I had these Conn's in the past but sold them away...they didn't really connect with me: Shorter - Etectera, All Seeing Eye Cherry - Symphnoy For Improvisors Hill- Judgement Sonny Red- Out of the Blue I really want to give the Shorters another chance, and I picked up the Spanish Out of the Blue and am happy with it! It's a good thing there are more Conns that I've owned and have liked. I am staying away from the Braith and the Corea!

I just like the cover for Brown Sugar...I don't know why, it's just a cool cover!!

Looking for some good humorous novels
Jazzdog replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Sorry to sound pedantic here, but I believe Neon Bible was published whilst he was still alive (as opposed to the posthumous Dunces). I might have reworded that, but it seemed to make sense! Also, up for another humorous novel... A series actually, Fletch by Gregory McDonald You may know this from the film starring Chevy Chase but the novels are seriously fun and well written. The books arent as wacky as the film but they just get better and better as the series progresses!!! -
WHOA...I meant no disrespect to Sir John, I love his work, but look at all the Patton titles that have been in print domestically in the US compared to Freddie Roach's. Good Move is about it...at last afaik. We need more! I know you won't disagree with me there!
-
Bach me, Amadeus!!
-
It's better. Guy I totally concur. It's a shitload FONKier and the telepathy between Paul Jackson and Mike Clark is just...well, they invented that style so you make the call on that one!
-
Where's the Mother F&#$%#ing Freddie Roach Mosaic Select!!! I'd get that above the Patton in a heartbeat!!!
-
Wow, I've had this for years and thoughly enjoy it. Shame that recently Palermo decided to retire his Zappa band and start performing his own music. Good thing he captured some songs on tape.
-
I go thru pahses myself. There was one point in time where I listneed to nothing but Zappa, 2 years of that and enough is enough!! Then it was Phish for a year or so...collected a ton of bootlegs!! After that it's a mishmash, I'll listen to nothing but a certain thing for a whole day, the other day I listened to Rush all day, I just got the Herbie Blue Note box and listened to that all day and once not long ago I listened to Dylan for two days straight. Over the last 10 years or so I've logged many hours buried in the music of Peter Hammill. He's kind of obscure, but he writes the kind of lyrics that beg for deeper examination, so I'd probably say that I listen to him more than any one particualr person or artist...after that Zappa and then probably Coltrane!
-
WEll, after listening to each release exactly once (not the Trane though) I have to say that the Blakey date is the most impressive thus far. It just explods out of the starting gate and never relents. The Dex is VERY nice, I would say that it's at least as good as GO. Bud sounds great!
-
Matt, the organ sound DOES sound a bit rough at the very begining of that track. I have't heard the previous version(s) so can't help you thee, but I did notice it sounds a little bit wacky there.
-
Grant Green Hoooooo doggie, where to start. Or perhaps more importantly, where to stop (though conventional wisdom would surely say, "About 1969")! I fluctuate between Solid and Idle Moments as my favs so far. Anything he did with John Patton or Larry Young is also strong!!!! Not to mention the Sonny Clark sides...aww hell!!! Beautiful stuff.
-
Yeah, the Virgin double LP is the way to go, I either still own that or I traded it away, can't remember. I also agree that most of Slyvian's best work came after he left (broke up) the band. Still though, the album Rain Tree Crow contains all of the original members and is a might fine release. You can hardly go wrong with David Sylvian though...that voice is golden!!!
-
That's because I already bought em all!! Sorry!

Basically that is exactly how the Coens saw the whole film. It is as much a send up of Marlowe as much as it is an homage. If you check out the interview on the dvd version of the film they discuss a few details for comparisons sake! "You mean, coitus?"
