  1. They are a few long pieces, so in the time department, can't really say that we're getting screwed up, made a small check on a few cds, they are mostly around the 50 minutes mark.
  2. Here's the track list. http://www.alapage.c...es/pdf/nova.pdf A while back I mentionned buying this set and MG showing an interest for it asking me to report back, unfortunately I completely forgot about it. however, I found a deal to get the older set plus a new set done this year, just prior to Christmas, how convenient ! Of course if I'm buying the other sets of this series it is because I enjoyed the one showcased but you have to be careful and know a few things before hand. The great positive is the music by itself, especially if you have eclectic tastes like mine and don't mind listening to different styles in the same period of time, you'll listen to people you never bother buying a whole cds of them but that you might enjoy Yma Sumac comes to mind, you'll hear stuff you didn't remember and (at least in my case ) hear stuff you never heard before. At the same time, the set is still what it is a bunch miscellaneous pieces bunched together and in a MP3 world, you have to wonder whether it still is relevant. The other negatives about the set is like MG mentionned when we discussed the set back then, is that they took creative liberties about the years the songs have been made. Each Cd is suppposed to represent a year in a few cases the selection gets away from that without any explanations. Also there is no putting into context the songs chosen nor they are liner notes about the artists themselves, so all you are ending up is a great bunch of soing you might enjoy, depending on your tastes. I was lucky besides the few jazz that weren't that original, I had very little of the rest of this collection but this not may be your case, my take on it is check out the song selection and decide whether it is worth it. It sure makes for an original jukebox.

  9. I read that book when I was still living in Brookline, MA. I remember really liking it. Yep the writer did a fine job of putting Berlin back to life and he did it in a straightforward and accessible way , a little like Berlin's composition,
  10. One of my favourite local artist is the man in the title of my thread, he's a fine musician with a good voice for that style of music, no gimmicks , just pure music. His latest cd is a slight detour from what he generally offers, arrangements are a little more ambitious and all the music is his own You can find some of his previous recordings here and some samples http://www.michaeljeromebrowne.com/en/index_e.html although i would also suggest the work he did with the Stephen Barry blues band
  11. I've noticed that when we start a thread about contemporary musicians, the only way we get a multi page thread it is because it becomes a bash fest à la Joshua Redman, There was recently a thread about Sylvie Courvoisier that went nowhere fast, can't say that the one about David Binney lasted long either and a recommendation thread i start about Sakoto Fujii as i was trying to buy recordings of her never got answered. I can understand people being more interested into the classic years but still ...

  13. Can we add to the list of people who deserve a long painful death the motherfucker who decided that cds should be sold with tight paper wrap around them.
  14. Finished this... IRVING BERLIN - As Thousands Cheer - By Laurence Bergreen Very interesting book that talk about an era and a style of music that i knew next to nothing about. Currently reading this Fascinating trilogy , your typical pageturner of a thriller that you can't leave it without knowing what is going to happen next
  15. According to Wikipedia they got that nickname for the 1995 season, they had no official names in 1994 they were unofficially called CFlers. Gotta say i did not remember that.
