    Three Sounds

    But Andrew Hill!
  2. Bet it goes well with Turducken®!
  3. Exactly. Which is why, while I personally wasn't offended by the whole Janet Jackson fiasco, I could understand the ire of some parents who weren't expecting to see some tittie. At the same time, from what I've seen of this MNF skit, while perhaps misguided in hindsite, it seems pretty darn tame. I mean, I've seen more skin in shampoo commercials. Some people seem to go out of their way to be offended.
  4. Okay - bad example. Even the dudes at Downbeat think she's hot.
  5. Anyone other than rock/pop critic musicians in there? Didn't think so. Well, it's a rock/pop music magazine. Do you expect Downbeat to review the latest Britney Spears album?
  6. As a Dylan fan, I can't argue with "Like a Rolling Stone" being voted #1. Rolling Stone (the magazine) has never been only about the music. I'm not sure why you reject their right to poll 172 "critics and musicians" for their opinion on this.
  7. Saw this CD today in the bins and did a double take. Didn't pick it up since it seemed so odd and I couldn't listen to it first, but the first thing I did was check out the review on AMG. Interesting to say the least... This encounter is a disaster. Mary Lou Williams, who always prided herself on being open-minded, arranged to perform a duo piano concert with the avant-garde master Cecil Taylor. She wanted them to go through her usual history-of-jazz program but neglected to gain Taylor's consent and, since he never compromises his atonal music, the lack of communication between the two players is laughable. While Williams tries to demonstrate blues, ragtime, stride and swing, Taylor plays in his usual dense and dissonant style on top of her. The result is a complete mess that is almost impossible to listen to. Anybody have this one? And what are your thoughts? Sounds like it might be interesting to hear... once.
  8. Nah, It was actually taken from a review on the Blue Note site of "Birth of the Cool". The review immediately below it was MUCH better though! Anyone remember that one? Cheers, Shane Found it! But it's actual more vulgar and less funny than I remember... http://web.archive.org/web/20030121110037/...electionID=9529
  9. A recent discussion of my old "stupid ass-donkey moron" signature line led me to try to find both it and another, highly vulgar review of "Birth of the Cool" that briefly appeared some years ago on the ol' Blue Note board. I was surprised that it did show up, courtesy of the Wayback Machine. Since the other "review" is so, well, explicit, it's probably best to just post a link to it rather than quote it here. Enjoy... B-) http://web.archive.org/web/20030121110037/...electionID=9529
  10. Do to popular demand () I'm returning "donkey ass" to my sig line. Shane has it right: it came from a "review" on the ol' BN board. The other one was much, well, funnier, but there's a sweet naivete about this one that I've always found more appealing. That, and the hilarious broken english.
  11. For sheer quantity of reviews there's no choice but allmusic. It has its faults, but it's still the best review site out there.
  12. AMG sells their database to various other music sites as well as, iirc, various music retailers and distributors. In fact, their on-line presense is supposedly for them something of an afterthought - it's not their "primary" purpose.
  13. Glad you liked that one, Mike!
  14. Seriously, to the question, yes. Most recently, Zawinul's "Third Stream" disc. More often for me, though, it leads me to sample an artist whom I'd never heard of previously.
  15. Hmmmm. Does it count to search through one's collection to find the numerous tracks/discs that one has but didn't recognize when they did pop up on a BFT? If so, then yes!
  16. It's "You stupid-ass donkey moron who no like jazz!"
  17. For anyone interested in downloading this (legally!), this and many other Leo albums are available at emusic.com.
  18. I was at one of the Bakery shows as well. It's a good disc (even great perhaps), but for me the disc suffers from my having experienced the show live. The recording simply doesn't capture the live experience for me.
  19. Those sites are for children. This is where it's at... www.easytree.org
  20. I could never think of him as ODB ever since he appeared on the old Larry Sanders show and Hank Kingsley mistakenly called "Dirty Old Bitch." Completely ruined that nickname for me. Still, not a fan but R.I.P.
  21. Was he from a red state?
  22. "You'll take an eye out, kid!"
  23. Ah, the classic Ebay battle over "caveat emptor" and "the customer's always right." Yeah, the buyer's an idiot, but dealing with idiot buyers, like office supplies, falls under "cost of doing business" to me.
  24. I asked her to marry me and she just shrugged. Oh well...
  25. Much better than that dancing chicken!
