Nat King Cole Trio Mosaic CD box on Ebay
RDK replied to Shawn's topic in Offering and Looking For...
$500 isn't bad for the Cole set. I must have sold during a lull, though, as my spare set went for only around $300 a couple of years ago. I did, however, sell it to Bobby Darin's former manager, who picked it up in person leading to a very enjoyable chat at my home about Darin's old days at Capitol Records. It's amazing the people you meet on Ebay! -
Wow, that's not nearly as bad as I thought...

Man I'm dumb: I don't even know what a "puler" is. Should I?
-
Man, I go away for a few days and miss a lot! Don't much care for Deep's style, but at least he's an original. This Groper dude is just a derivative poser.

"Saxophone Vagina" reminds me of that flute joke from the end of the first American Pie film. You know, that one time, at band camp... But damn, *that's* gotta hurt!

finished happy now (you figure out the punctuation)

Or maybe it was Barbie who was "bumpin plastic"

I think they caught Ken getting it on with one of those hot-ass Bratz chicks...

Norah Jones album thread at BN site
RDK replied to jazzhound's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
So which of the "not yet on SACD" rants do you think is from Greg? Seriously, though, reading the reviews there is really disappointing to me - not because of the quality of the legit reviews but because so many people are blatantly using it as a forum to push their SACD or anti-copyguard agendas. It's not that i disagree with those agendas, either, but that the process undermines one of the true joys of the internet: the ability for anyone to post their opinions on a site like this or over at BN. But the benefit of such a free exchange of opinion is lost when it's essentially "spammed" in such a way. -
Then again, maybe you better not answer that...

How come when I go away for several weeks at a time no one notices?

Substitute Jimi Hendrix for Charlie Parker in the original post. B)

It's unfortunate, but this album is destined to have "sophomore jinx" all over it. No way will it sell as many copies as her first one and, because of her great and unexpected success, the critics will be gunning for her. Still, she should have a long career ahead of her...

I missed this thread the first time 'round, so this is really exciting news to me. Nice scoop, Dan! Looking forward to reading the interview wherever it may be published.

Oddly enough, I chose Adam's Apple - odd because it's the only one I don't yet have on CD. Yet it's my favorite. Go figure...

That's good for a couple hundred new pics in the Babes thread!

The really funny thing is, now that I'm reading the other posts in this thread, I have three browser windows opened: this one, the answers thread, and another permanently linked to AMG.

This one should link Pops with lot o' cats. It's also the closest you'll get to linking Armstrong with Pharoah Sanders (well, sort of)!

Okay, I admit it - I cheated and looked! -_- Events conspired against me and though I listened to each disc several times (maybe 3 or 4 times all the way through) I was never able to analyze (i.e. "guess") the tracks as I normally like to do. I did recognize a couple of the vocal tracks and commented on those earlier, and a few others I felt fairly sure about - but in skimming this thread it was mentioned that all tracks were sucessfully identified and with the "answers" thread already started temptation got the best of me. I swear it won't happen again (unless it does, of course). (It also didn't help that I misplaced disc 2 last week, but it was finally found in the jewel case of my daughters' Wiggles CD. Now, however, I can't figure out where I put disc 1. Yes, it's been that kind of week...) First, a few general observations. Randy, thanks for the very interesting discs. I liked almost everything here, though there were a couple of tracks that I could live the rest of my life without. At the same time, I'm not sure if anything was truly "revelatory" for me. In most of the previous tests, there were a couple of standout tracks for me - truly unique (to me) listening experiences - but I don't think anything moved me quite so much this go 'round. But that may have less to do with the music than with my frame of mind while listening. Truthfully, after reading the answers, I realized that I have more of the specific tracks from this BFT in my collection than from any other BFTs - and yet I didn't recognize them. And I'm at least familiar with most of the artists here. I know I have I/3, I/7, I/9, II/8 and I think a couple of others as well. I can't believe I didn't recognize the Jarrett track, but it's not my favorite track from that album. Missing the Hill I'll simply chalk up to a brain fart. Looking at my meager notes, I thought that II/1 was some Rodrigo piece, like Concierto de Aranjuez, though obviously not the Miles Davis version. Gil Evans was not far from my mind on that one. For II/2, I suspected Cassandra Wilson or Abbey Lincoln. Betty Carter falls into that same category for me: I like each of them in doses, but they're not my favorite female jazz singers. I'm more of an Ella, Dinah, or Blossom guy myself. Track 10 is Getz? Jeez, that's why I generally don't care for electronically enhanced instruments. What a way to ruin such a beautiful tone.

Though I think I prefer one disc, which eases discussion, I'd vote for no limits. I think it's important, though, for the compiler to realize the extra time it takes to listen and absorb two discs rather than one and I think we might need some extra time between tests in those cases. We also have to take this on a case-by-case basis. I think one disc with, say, 15 or so short tracks is great, but a 30-track "double" is pushing it. If a compiler is into, for example, more modern or a-g stuff that usually have longer running times, I wouldn't mind seeing a 2-disc BFT that had fewer numer of tracks. Does that make sense? (I haven't had my coffee yet.)

You've got mail! Hope I'm not too late...

Did you see the glorious tribute to Artie Shaw
RDK replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Really wished I had seen the Corea-Foo Fighters thing. I'm betting that the musicians involved dig each other and had a blast doing it - I often find that musicians are more open-minded to different types/styles of Music (with a capital M) that their fans. -
I usually watch the Grammys and try not to knock them too much since they are what they are, but I'm betting that I have one of the best jazz-related excuses for missing them last night... since I was instead seeing Sam Rivers' amazing trio performing in L.A. B)

Tom, in regards the Sheila Jordan-Harvie Scwartz: yep, it's one of those live ones. Just picked it up a week or two again, but it's a bit underwhelming. I love Sheila, but only in certain contexts -- the duo stuff can be very good, but a little goes a very long way. I really dig the ECM albums she did with Steve Kuhn and Steve Swallow.

The Mitsui golds are certainly fine CDRs, but for everyday use they're awfully expensive. Using a coupon, my wife just picked up 200 TDK blanks for me at Costco for $26. Frankly, I've never had any problems using any quality brand name blanks. The only ones that ever went bad were no-name Office Depot blanks that i bought several years ago, when i got my very first CD burner.
