I'm not much of a fan of rap/hip-hop, but I've always found the sampling=bad arguement coming from the jazz community really ironic given how jazz is all about improvisation, with artists often lifting quotes (or full on creating new comps) from popular songs and showtunes. Hell, how is Common or Kanye sampling riffs any worse than Sonny injecting numerous musical quotes in his solos?

I read the thread title as "Catesta... why?" and was wondering what Chris did this time!

Haven't heard enough of the CIMPs to comment with any authority, but most of the Mapleshades that I have leave me cold. I still find it interesting that Roy DuNann got it right (and without really trying) over 50 years ago and few have gotten it better since then.

If you're looking for something a bit more "audiophile" (though still fairly cheap), check out audioadvisor.com. Some of their sale items are very good. I'm especially fond of their Cambridge Audio gear. -
Excessive project perhaps, but Young has never struck me as egotistic.

Yes, as many as you want. Check out the emu message board for more info. -
Nothing new. That's been going on for decades, if not centuries (well, not specifically the CD part).

i have heard her version of "falling down" now and i have to agree: dull and unremarkable. her voice is sexy but she can't sing ... but her singing is still the best part of this track. Well it can't possibly be due to low lung capacity!

Stop by Circuit City - you can get a 65-song booster for just five bucks! -
CDs are going the way of the dodo, so it's hard to imagine Concord keeping low-selling albums in print. To their great credit, though, virtually all OJC are available as digital downloads. I've picked up hundreds over the years from places like emusic.com. Not saying it's good or bad - it's simply the way of the future.

Hmmm. Just went to my local Circuit City, they didn't have this. They had 65 track starter boxes for $14.95. That's it. The regular price is $14.95, but it should be on sale this week for $4.95. Did you check the price at the register? It's pictured in the weekly ad. Box says the card expires on 4/08, but all reports (including mine!) indicate it still works. Did you have to create a new account, or could you use a current one? You can use your account. Just go to your account page and type in the code as if it were a "gift card." -
Anchor Sue Simmons drops the F-bomb

Technically, FCC-wise, the time doesn't matter. Besides, who needs to get over what? All reports I've read/seen so far have been laughing at the gaff, not calling for her head. -

Given how often news reporters are live-on-air (several times a day on several different channels in just about every major and minor city in the nation) and given the frenzied, high-pressured environment of a tv studio... I'm surprised these open-mic slip-ups don't happen much more frequently. -
From what i've heard, most of the older tape stocks of the 50s and 60s are pretty damn hearty. It was only when they changed the formula in the 70s that things got messy, requiring "baking" and stuff like that. Hoffman works with old tapes all the time and has done a remarkable job over the years locating and using the original masters rather than copy tapes; I'd give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the structural integrity of the tapes.

So I guess we should just say "good enough" and send the shit off to Iron Mountain.

By "uncompressed" I'll assume you mean .wav files, but I'd seriously recommend you rip to Flac. Not just for the space-saving benefits but for Flac's ability to save metadata such as album and track info. You might also look into a Squeezebox, though I'm not sure if it supports Mac (I think it does).

I Know I'm Wrong, But Ikea Ain't Right
RDK replied to robviti's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've actually found Ikea customer service to be way above average. I've seen them take back partially-assembled and fucked-up items - with a receipt of course - and they've replaced damaged pieces for me without question. My wife used to work retail back in college (not Ikea!) and some of the stories she tells about the lengths some customers will go to to save a few bucks or skim merchandise are ridiculous - or, conversely, of stores taking back obviously used items that the customers bought but no longer have use for. I obviously don't mean this as any insult to the shrink - I'm sure he's smart enough to rip off the store in much bigger ways if he tried. -
Yes indeed. But with the caveat that unless you know some of the ins and outs of Marvel Comics you might not even "get" this little bonus scene. And there's a damn long list of credits to get through. Told ya!

I Know I'm Wrong, But Ikea Ain't Right
RDK replied to robviti's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Sorry, but I have to side with the store in this case. Yeah, they could probably cross-check a credit card transaction and see that, yes, you did buy the chairs, but their policy (like just about everyone these days) is no returns w/o a receipt. But not only don't you have the receipt, but you don't have the items to "return" either. I know, you don't have the items - that's the point - but from their point of view this could so easily be a scam. -
Sorry to hear this. I haven't heard much of his work, but I like what I have heard - especially an album he did with Sam Rivers back in the mid-70s.
