  1. And on their slate: Philly Joe Jones - The Zildjian Collection
  2. boy, what a skeptic you are! perhaps a skeptic, or maybe a narcissist to think that jazz fans are even considered a demographic. i think more people dislike jazz than like it, so putting Miles et al on the list could backfire and cost him the election. Right, as if McCain has anything beyond "Sing Along with Mitch" on his iPod. Assuming he even HAS an iPod. Yeah, but McCain did hear Buddy Bolden play live - that's gotta count for something!
  3. Yeah, that Bahiana cover is horrible. Looks like Dizzy got punched in the mouth by Jake LaMotta.
  4. What's wrong w/ the Ella sides? She's in consistently fine form throughout, at least based on the Pablo concert comp in this thread. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=44796 Hell, I can't remember why I said something last week let alone almost five years ago! lol Probably just with all the Ella material out there - and I'm a big fan - I find most of her Pablo sides to be among her weakest. There's some fine stuff, but not on par with most of her Verve albums.
  5. I Can’t Stop Loving You - Ray Charles

    Johnny Lytle

    Yep, very good one!
  7. Yeah, but, Kenny G really is the Devil.
  8. Holy **** Let's just be careful about spreading these unsubstantiated rumors though.
  9. I'd suggest that most forms of music sound better with a stripper dancing alongside.
  10. Where's Clem when you really need him?
  11. Agree completely. Can't say I listen to Benson much these days, but as a jazz cat the guy can play and as a pop singer he's mostly entertaining as well. Can't fault a guy for doing what he (presumably) likes to do - and do well. Saying he sucks is also insulting to his many, many fans. I'm not a musician, but I strongly suspect that one of the joys of being a musician (an artist of any kind actually) is not just the satisfaction one gets from producing/performing one's own art but also from the reciprocation (and not just adulation) one gets from a receptive audience. If that makes him a "sell out" then I guess he's a sell out - and I guess most of the rest of us are as well.
  12. One of them is, yes, but there are three girls and I can never keep them straight. One used to work at Rhino Records in Westwood, where my friend tried to hit on her one day. Ironically, I met her when I was buying a copy of Charlie's latest album and she said something like, "that's my dad."
  13. You probably just advertised to more people than would have seen it on the blog. I bought it last week from emusic.
  14. Haven't seen Wall-E yet. Was gonna take the girls last weekend, but they said they wanted to wait for the DVD instead. Will try to convince them otherwise. Did see Hancock, though, which i thought had promise but was an absolute mess as rendered.
  15. I'm having trouble interpreting this whole thread right about now. A thread about a large layoff at EMI has somehow gotten off into a discussion of music business ethics. Music biz ethics? As Hunter Thompson once said... "The music industry is a cruel and shallow money-trench. A long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs. There is also a negative side.”
  16. I'm suddenly having flashbacks to my "Interpreting Dylan" class from college.
  17. I have a hard time reconciling your being an animator and animation fan with not wanting to see what most people consider to be the pinnacle of contemporary feature animation.
  18. Strange. By choice or circumstance?
  19. First heard some of this material on a mid-80s Verve cassette called, iirc, "Dale's Wail." It was one of those transcendant jazz listening experiences for me, and I wore out that tape before my roommate at the time borrowed it forever.
  20. Go see Wanted instead. It's much better, R-rated, and you get to see Anjie's naked backside. And though I don't have points, I did work on it.
  21. This is the first I've heard that Will is into Scientology.
  22. So he's paid big bucks to say shocking things and then people get upset when he says things that shock them. And so it goes.
  23. Don't know if it's been posted before (and I ain't about to go back and check), but for those looking to save youtube vids or convert them to adio files, this is a nifty site my wife wised me to... youconvertit .com
  24. God damn, that's embarrassing!
  25. When an irresistible force such as you Meets and old immovable object like me You can bet as sure as you live Something's gotta give, something's gotta give, Something's gotta give. This is like the first act of some bad romantic comedy. I'm heading to the lobby for some popcorn, but let me know when you guys start dating...
