  1. There are two, related, answers to that, as far as I'm concerned. The first is that everyone should, and does, as far as I know, decide what risks, personal and third party, they're prepared to put up with in their life. There is no such thing as risk free living. Indeed, one might as well be concerned with the increased risk of getting into an auto accident while traveling to a jazz concert or CD store more often than the average person.
  2. My right brain just cock-punched my left brain and now that dancing chick is moving counter-clockwise.
  3. This is really mind-fucking me. I know the numbers add up, but it's so counterintuitive to me that it's giving me a headache.
  4. Hell, you're already wearing a Bozo costume or something - how much more of a dumbass could you feel?
  5. I haven't a clue as to most of these, but this is a killer compilation. The two that stand out for me are the first two on the disc... 1. Dig this so much! Is this Venuti/Lang? If so, I’m really starting to regret not getting that Mosaic box. 2. Love that growling sound - what the hell is it anyway? Great jungle rhythm. Don’t think it’s Ellington’s band, but it’s someone I’d definitely like to check out more of.
  6. Wow, love this outpouring of liberal compassion. Maybe next we can all take a field trip to spit on his grave. You have got to be kidding me.

  8. you got me curious... I remember seeing that when it first aired. But damn if that isn't an awkward and uncomfotrable interview. Looks like Tom's still getting over the DTs.
  9. Great song. Love that last line about Carlos. Always wondered if this was the same Frank Tom's writing about... What's he building in there? What the hell is he building In there? He has subscriptions to those Magazines... He never Waves when he goes by He's hiding something from The rest of us... He's all To himself... I think I know Why... He took down the Tire swing from the Peppertree He has no children of his Own you see... He has no dog And he has no friends and His lawn is dying... and What about all those packages He sends. What's he building in there? With that hook light On the stairs. What's he building In there... I'll tell you one thing He's not building a playhouse for The children what's he building In there? Now what's that sound from under the door? He's pounding nails into a Hardwood floor... and I Swear to god I heard someone Moaning low... and I keep Seeing the blue light of a T.V. show... He has a router And a table saw... and you Won't believe what Mr. Sticha saw There's poison underneath the sink Of course... But there's also Enough formaldehyde to choke A horse... What's he building In there. What the hell is he Building in there? I heard he Has an ex-wife in some place Called Mayors Income, Tennessee And he used to have a consulting business in Indonesia... but what is he building in there? What the hell is building in there? He has no friends But he gets a lot of mail I'll bet he spent a little Time in jail... I heard he was up on the Roof last night Signaling with a flashlight And what's that tune he's Always whistling... What's he building in there? What's he building in there? We have a right to know...
  10. Will get to more specific comments later, but just wanted to drop in and say how much I'm enjoying thee discs. Not really my "era" of jazz - so my comments will probably be dumb - but together this is one entertaining compilation!
  11. I finally cracked it a week or so ago and have been going through it as well. Highly recommended!
  12. All/most of those are already available digitally at emusic, and for much less.
  13. I only recently found a cheap copy of Sizzle and I really dig that one. Obviously have all the Blue Notes and many/most of his ECM sides. I was in the audience for the "80th Birthday" recording he did at the Jazz Bakery. I love his recent trio, as well as his "old" one with Barry A. and Dave H. Right now I'm listening a rather obscure disc: NOJO's "City of Neighborhoods," with Sam guesting all over it. Still, my enjoyment of Rivers' records is real hit-or-miss. I think I like him more now that he's mellowed a bit and my ears are more open. He's also one of those guys who I prefer seeing live than listening to on the stereo.
  14. No, but I saw him last week backing Herbie. Hard to tell in the mostly-Headhunters-like ensemble he was in, but he has chops and seemed to be having a blast on stage.
  15. Agree with the above. I was considering "splurging" on a few of my favorite titles, but this latest debacle has made me even more cautious. I'm truly shocked that some of these examples left RTI. I've toured their facilities and seen first-hand the care they (seem to) take with their product. I understood that they even examined each disc by hand, but they obviously don't.
  16. There's a reason for that: we are hard-wired to like salt since it's essential to human survival. Not on a Hungry Man meals level, perhaps, but still...
  17. While I obviously appreciate the greatness of the 9s and 10s, I will cop to the occassional enjoyment of many of the 4s and 6s on that list as well. But what does the Russian judge think?
  18. And it's an opinion shared by many of us. Good post, Jim.
  19. Perhaps this might be part of the "problem"? Yes, perhaps. Perspective can be a "problem," but somebody's always going to have it (hopefully). But doesn't perspective have little to do with the "industry" as we're talking about it here? Perspective is all well and good - I like to think I've attained at least some of it myself - but where does it leave the jazz community - hell, the entire musical genre - if all of our "giants" (save, perhaps, Rollins) are all dead and gone? Yeah, one can complain that Josh is "good enough," "the best of the rest," backhand dismiss him as a "very good player," whatever, but I'll be damned if I limit myself to only the greats. In that case, why move beyond Armstrong, Bird, Parker, Monk, Mingus, Coltrane, etc.? Heck, even Mabern is a hack in that company.
  20. Disc 1 downloaded and extracted w/o a hitch! Might add that .wma isn't my favorite file format, but it'll do.
  21. RDK

    Cables

The only Cables that matters is George.
  22. No need for jokes. That Aretha's a mighty fine box!
  23. Sonya Kitchell is indeed correct; I think she also sang "River" on Herbie's recent appearance on Leno. I'll take your word on Lionel Loueke - but the way Herbie said it, it sounded like it had more syllables than that.
  24. Hey, I was there too! As for the thread, I recently picked up the second volume, sans box, for $25, and I'm digging the hell out of it. I can't say it's "better" than the first box - which is chock full of stone classics - but in some ways I'm liking it even more, if only because I'm less familiar with the later Stax tunes and thus so many of the cuts are coming at me as the most wonderful surprises. I hear these tracks and I'm thinking, "Damn, why haven't I heard this before?!"
