  1. You'll need at least the 4-disc Hitsville box.
  2. You're not rich because you haven't read The Secret!
  3. I've got a few of the sets - actually like vol. 1 the best, which surprised me because i wasn't very familiar with the earliest stuff and they hadn't yet developed their classic Motown sound. The problem is that a lot of the singles really aren't that great - or good even. It may be a document of the era, but Hitsville makes for much better listening imo.
  4. Hey Jim - how's that Clem-to-English Babelfish plug-in coming along?
  5. What's the big deal? Concord does more than just jazz and Hear Music has a distribution deal with Starbucks. Don't worry. I don't think this means we'll be seeing a "Macca Does Monk" disc anytime soon.
  6. Celebrities are real people too you know. They take dumps and listen to jazz just like the rest of us...

That makes no sense!
  8. Well I'm sick to death of movies that look like b&w photographs!
  9. I'm not a big fan of Best Buy either, but there's one down the street from me and the last few years I've gotten $500 gift certificates for them from work... so I shop there fairly often. But i usually buy only deeply discounted new items the first week they go on sale and/or their weekly sale items. Rarely have a problem with things being out of stock and I've never had a problem receiving rebates (when, that is, I remember to mail them in).
  10. I don't understand this . What possible cachet could the Mosaic brand have for someone interested in Earl Klugh or Alex Bugnon ?? I mean , if Mosaic was a purveyor of bottled water or organic food or some other 'lifestyle' product then maybe , but this branding strategy makes no sense whatsoever . Mosaic's press release states that their mission is , " to fill a vacuum where the established recording industry is lax " . An Amazon search for Earl Klugh yields 96 results , including a two-volume 'best-of' compilation . Also notable is that the resale value of some of these titles is in the one or two dollar range ! So in the case of Klugh at least , we have a market that is already well-served , and with a secondary market exerting extreme downward pressure on new-issue price points . Seems to me like a poorly thought-out venture born of financial necessity . Maybe instead of Klugh/Bugnon (on the labels) the music will actually be Braxton Aristas or Strata East sides - Mosaic's way of slipping the good stuff out there under the guise of smooth jazz.
  11. Ironically, Ms. Cattrall has ended up on a few desert island lists herself.
  12. Well I for one won't buy a damn thing if Cuscuna shaves off his beard...
  13. Quite faithful to Frank's GN, but I didn't like it.
  14. I'd still recommend that you would invest slightly more on a Playstation 2, since you can play old PS1 games on it as well... Bump. Any new advice? The kids have recently become hooked on playing Super Mario Sunshine on the ol' Gamecube, but before I invest in more games for them/me, I've been thinking with picking up a cheap PS2 instead (which can be had new for only $129 now). Not sure I want to spend as much on a PS3, X360, or even Wii - but there are a bunch of PS2 and Xbox games that I'm interested in. How's the video output quality of the PS2 - at least compared to the Gamecube? I know it's not HD, but that's not so important to me even though we have a HD set. It looks like the PS2 is at least DVD quality, so is that 480p - and what's the coresponding vid quality of the Cube? Some dumb questions, I'm sure, but I really don't want to drop $4-500 bucks on the newest systems - and besides the wife would nix that anywa.
  15. I agree. It's a needlessly alarmist thread. But since we're here - what do we think the future of Mosaic might be, at least to the larger box sets? I mean, their bread and butter seems to have been, over the years, the BN/Capitol, EMI catalog, but that's pretty we ll mined by this point and Mosaic can't/refuses to re-release/repeat their earlier sets. In other words - and I think we've discussed this before - haven't most of the "big guns" available to them already been released? It helps, of course, that Mosaic has recently been releasing more Verve sets, but as much as we want to see a Braxton Arista box (for example), it's hardly comparable, commercially, to another Duke collection or the BN recordings of Lee Morgan.
  16. And Kelly is really, really good!
  17. Heh. Rewind is playing in the background as I'm browsing the forum. Ryan just sang and now Christina Christian is on. Now she's one hella babe I gotta say. Probably the most beautiful contestant ever. And she can sing!
  18. There is a school of thought among many film composers that the most effective film scoring goes unnoticed. I understand the logic but don't entirely agree, because some people inherently have a greater ability or desire to pay attention to the music, regardless of the composer's intention. Likely because a film score is meant to compliment whatever's on the screen - not compete with it. It's meant to evoke feeling and emotion, not to draw attention to itself per se.
  19. Unless you're watching on a very small set, my experience is just the opposite - it's a dramatic difference to me and most. Hate to say it, but are you set up correctly?
  20. Heck, even the bootleggers make the effort to cut these out.
  21. Sadly, most Americans are simply not educated these days, despite near record levels of people going to college. But I do think we have to take these death of culture essays with a grain of salt. Adorno and others wrote long books about how horrible middlebrow and popular culture were, and this was in the late 1940s and 1950s, which is an era many of us consider to have produced some of the best movies and music of all times. I think plenty of people are educated....just not culturally educated! I work with a ton of people that have many degrees and are very smart (some brilliant) that haven't set foot in a museum, listened to jazz or read books since college....seems strange to me but that's what I'm seeing. Mark~ What bothers me about some of these sentiments (and others) is the suggestion that one needs to be "educated" to like and appreciate jazz. That sort of elitist attitude toward the music is one of the reasons it's been ghettoized and become increasingly unpopular over the years. I think Jim comes closest to hitting the mark in his statement that jazz has turned into music for musicians, not music for the people. It's really no big deal to me that jazz is so relatively unpopular. It's simply not a "pop" music genre. I mean, I don't like much country music (especially modern country) or opera, and there are vast types of Classical that I can take or leave. It has nothing to do with education, whether general or musical.
  22. When the time comes, I'll loan you the ten bucks...
  23. No, only a set top box (less than $100) will be necessary in order to receive digital TV. A new TV set is only necessary if you want to benefit from HDTV quality. They're estimating now that the digital converters will cost from $30-50 and the gov't has pledged 2 $40 rebate coupons to each family in the U.S. So the cost outlay to consumers should be minimal. As for the tech itself, I haven't met a single person who hasn't been impressed by the quality of high def.
