  1. I'm really tempted to go down for the Roy Dunann tribute, but the rest of it's way too pricey for me. Wish they sold daily passes.
  2. The Onion's obit... http://www.onionsportsnetwork.com/articles/al-davis-dies-alone-surrounded-by-closest-friends,26294/
  3. A visionary who changed the world. Not many of them around. RIP.
  4. thank you!
  5. I guess I'm what one might call a "die hard" fan as I enjoy even their later albums, though "reveal" is, imo, by far their weakest. Hell, I even like most of "Around the Sun," which many despise. I'm not sure what the timing of the announcement has to do with Mr. Davis' case; given their history (at least compared to most popular rock bands), I'd be more inclined to think that they'd hoped to bury their break-up in other, more noteworthy news. As others have noted, it seems that a good number of people believed that R.E.M. already broke up some time ago.
  6. Yep, I discovered them very early on and they were the first band that I truly considered "my own." I'm sad, and yet I'm also glad that they're calling it quits before they turn into rock and roll dinosaurs (and some consider that they already have!). I have no doubt that they'll continue to happily make music, alone or together, and my chances of seeing them again in a small club have just increased considerably.
  7. Sounds like a misheard Velvet Underground lyric!
  8. What? Again? Seems like we do the same thing every year. Oh well, Happy Birthday, Dan!
  9. Now that's tossing the baby out with the bathwater! Speaking of New Yawk, one of my favorite eps of Throwdown is when Flay goes up against that NYC-based designer donut maker. I've rarely seen a bigger prick on a reality-based TV show - the donut guy, that is, not Bobby Flay. Flay's a cool cat - even though he beat the folks at L.A.'s Pink's.
  10. If you search under "Capitol Vaults Jazz" it lists the Elvin at $27.09
  11. Yeah- but the outro to Layla is still magic to my ears.
  12. You guys are too damn cynical. Me, I can't wait to hear Wynton's trumpet solo on Layla!
  13. I'm assuming that NF (and all services really) will have more and more films available for streaming in the future - that's the direction everyone is heading. I have no interest in getting discs by mail. I've been pleased with the picture quality on my 56" set, and some of the streaming NF content is in HD.
  14. Awesome photo! Some of the comments following it, though, are... interesting.
  15. I'm going through the same thing right now. Just started the free trial of Netflix's streaming service last week and i really love it - though, if one digs deeper into the catalog you can find that many films are not yet available for streaming. Still, I already have about 50 items in my instant queue. I figure that when my Netflix trial is done then I can give the Amazon trial a try.
  16. I showed the clip to my wife who, while finding it funny, responded with this: "Like everything Jazz, it's too long."
  17. I, at least, am very glad that this news was posted. It's not good news, certainly, but I think it's important that we know about this since Bill was a member of our jazz community.
  18. Frankly, I'm much less concerned about who owns the rights to popular recordings than I am with so-called orphan works that fall between the cracks.
  19. Jazz music is so unpopular/under-appreciated these days that I have a hard time believing that, "sucks" or not, jazz musicians aren't at least playing 'cause they're passionate about it.
  20. I was only half-joking up above when I asked KR to name names. I seriously don't understand where he's coming from or what he's getting at. Does he really mean that many of the jazz cats out there are bad/sucky at what they do - and even then I don't know if he's referring to new recordings or some guy tickling the ivories in a super club - or is this another sweeping condemnation of Kenny G and his smooth jazz ilk who clutter up some radio stations' "jazz charts?" If he's referring to Dave Koz or Boney James - two guys that my brother-in-law, for example, would name if asked to name some modern jazz musicians - then yeah, I might agree with him.
  21. I want names, dammit, names! Who are these sucky jazz musicians so I can avoid them? And don't go giving me Kenny G. We already know about him.
  22. Still cracks me up that they spelled "chronological" wrong. But I love the fact that they never corrected it.
  23. Storm was dead on target. Thank goodness by the time it reached New York it was no more than a Cat 1. It could have been much worse.
