  1. Absolutely! Although I'm not sure Mannix is culturally big enough to warrant its own musical genre!
  2. That is BRILLIANT! I immediately texted this to my wife, who agrees with me that we should start using these as genre categories! I would guess that "The Duke" by Dave Brubeck would be Peanuts Jazz, and "Stolen Moments" by Oliver Nelson would be Peter Gunn Jazz. Not sure about Batman jazz. Maybe some of the more steroid-infused Maynard Ferguson or Buddy Rich charts? Was this woman a musician? I find it infinitely more rewarding to discuss music with informed and passionate non-musicians. They tend to use very compelling, descriptive language and imagery.
  3. The Christmas album can't be any worse than his other stuff, with the exception that it may contain some songs by professional songwriters.
  4. So which track am I missing? Something he must have recorded elsewhere, I assume?
  5. I recognized it as jazz, but had pretty limited exposure to jazz at that point. I remember learning "Linus and Lucy" by ear when I was 10 or 11.
  6. Here is a question for the professional, semi-professional, and amateur musicians here: Assuming you are of the right age group and watched Peanuts cartoons as a kid, to what degree did Vince Guaraldi's music pique your interest in jazz?
  7. Thanks!
  8. I have an RCA Camden compilation called Modern Jazz Piano: Four Views (CAL 384). It has several Art Tatum solo tracks. I was not aware of any Art Tatum on RCA. Did he briefly record for them?
  9. Mary Lou Williams is an artist I have known about for decades but barely explored. I have an RCA Camden compilation called Modern Jazz Piano: Four Views (CAL 384). The MLW tracks feature all-female bands. The vibes player, Margie Hyams, also played with George Shearing. Did these all-female groups record very much?
  10. Did you guys break into my record room? This is my entire collection. If you're going to play Mannix, you may as well play the original by Lalo.
  11. Not nitpicking at all. This frequently happens when an "expert" in one area is clueless about all other areas. Thanks for pointing that out. The guy on the internet should have done his homework.
  12. That was interesting, thanks. I wish they had said what happened to the other music the guy had recorded at home. I imagine the other records he made have historical significance.
  13. I guess we hear different things, but Legrand's orchestrations sound "fuller" to me on Richard Rodgers album than Cinema (which is a very nice album, but the way). I am hearing more complex harmonies and interesting sectional interplay on RR.
  14. I kinda like the EZ/groovy version of "Easy to Be Hard" too.
  15. That's the one!
  16. I was reading Aznevour's obit this morning silently, and I quietly said aloud, "France's Frank Sinatra." My wife heard me and replied, "I thought it was Francis Albert Sinatra." RIP.
  17. Listened to Hair yesterday. I had high hopes for this album. This is money cut:
  18. Cannonball Adderley - Live - Capitol (yellow reissue label, stereo)
  19. Buddy Rich in London is in queue for a scrub on the Nitty Gritty!
  20. "Hair" was a disappointment. "Colored Spade" was by far the money cut, but there were a few others worth spinning. Leon Thomas with Oliver Nelson - Live in Berlin - Flying Dutchman
  21. Michel Legrand - Broadway is My Beat - Philips (mono) Oscar Peterson - A Jazz Portrait of Frank Sinatra - Verve (mono) Eddie Harris - Silver Cycles - Atlantic (stereo) Stan Kenton - Hair - Capitol (stereo, with amazing green and purple labels). If the whole album is as good as track one…Wow!
  22. Wow, I really disagree with this assessment. I think there are all sort of interesting colors and textures on this album, and what is remarkable to me, considering the size of the group, is that it never sounds cluttered.
  23. Has anyone studied this? Several famous (and semi-famous) musicians did, including George Gershwin, Vernon Duke, Tito Puente, and Leith Stevens. Others I'm not thinking of. I downloaded a giant pdf file years ago, and started to do some work, but I admit, the math was challenging. Curious to hear any opinions or experiences.
  24. I suppose that some day I should play side 2 of the 12" version of Afro Cuban. It's just so hard to listen to conservative straight-ahead jazz after 20 minutes of kick-ass Latin rhythms.
  25. My favorite is Afro Cuban, especially with the 10" album cover art.
