  1. That's my bet.
  2. Well, those things are exactly what Nina is to me. Also throw in Great American Songbook and oddball choices of pop tunes, all delivered with an air of mystery. Her seven LPs on Philips are stellar top to bottom. The earlier Colpix and later RCA are less consistent but all hit their heights. No one else did what Nina did. Maybe some jazz listeners have issues with her because she is so much bigger than jazz alone.
  3. Yes, I would like to know what everyone's idea is and exactly how the artist fell short of it in practice.
  4. It was her first love, and the fact that a career as a classical pianist did not happen for her seemed to haunt her through her life.
  5. I was obsessed with Bud Powell when I was in my late teens. I have all the Blue Note stuff and most of the Verve stuff, but the RCA stuff was hard to find at that time. A few years ago, I ran across the Bluebird CD of the RCA stuff - not sure how complete it is - and it left me cold. Not sure if it was the music itself, or if it was me. Maybe I'd hit a saturation point when I was younger and there was no space left. I dunno. On the other hand, I recently heard four or six of the Blue Note tracks that were collected on the Vogue Jazz from America box set, and it was nice to hear them again.
  6. Watched the film this evening. I am a huge fan of her music, but there are so many things about her that I did not know.
  7. Oh, noes...
  8. I love the later groovy stuff. The earlier straight ahead stuff is not as interesting to me, and harmonically, he does not seem as together on those earlier albums. But the later stuff is killer!
  9. Wait'll ya hear this:
  10. Seriously?!?!? So this means I can create a compilation with: "Heart Full of Soul" by the Johnny Mann Singers "Over Under Sideways Down" by Enoch Light "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" by Sandy Nelson and, now, "Still I'm Sad" by the Three Sounds. Anyone know of any covers of "For Your Love" or "Shapes of Things" by aging jazz or easy listening artists?
  11. Giorgio sings the low part on this Yardbirds classic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONVXNH7D4Qw
  12. Huge fan. His output from "Space Oddity" in 1969 to "Scary Monsters" in 1980 is absolutely breathtaking. Brilliant lyrics, music, production, and presentation throughout. Hard to find other examples of this level of consistency in almost any genre.
  13. Thanks for the reply. As I said, I write a variety of things, some of which are not melody-based at all (though they contain melodies) and these may go into directions more along the lines of what you are describing. I am talking about things that seem to naturally evolve into something more resembling a traditional "song," though without lyrics. I do not try to physically sing these things back, but as someone who once very serious about voice, I think I may be subconsciously pre-disposed to thinking along the lines of vocal phrases. I suppose I may also be thinking about phrases that a listener can grab onto. I have always had strong simultaneously leanings toward things that are challenging and things that are catchy. I don't know if I have partially answered your questions or just created more of them.
  14. I have a question for anyone here who writes instrumental melody-based compositions: To what degree do you consider the "singability" of the melody - even if it is an instrumental - in terms of phrase lengths, places to breathe, interval jumps, range of he melody, etc.? I write a variety of instrumental things, but whenever I write something that is primarily melody-based, I find myself thinking of the ability to sing it, for better or worse. I don't know if this is positive, in that it forces me to be economical or to think on a level that taps into something more primal, or if it is a needless limitation that I impose on myself. Just curious to know if anyone has thoughts on this topic.
  15. I finally picked up Trip to the Mars by Roland Kovac! So happy to have this! Jazzy big band with some spacey touches. The third track sounds like Peter Thomas!
  16. Thank you!
  17. I am intrigued. Where should I start?
  18. I'm still trying to complete my Blowfly collection.
  19. Has this ever been on CD? I see only vinyl and mp3 versions. I'm guessing there may have been a pricey Japanese release?
  20. There are "jazz critics" in 2015. That is pretty funny.
  21. Robert Drasnin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rN9HyY0ez3E
  22. Yes. I also like the album he did with Singers Unlimited.
  23. OK. I say this as someone who admires OP's abilities and technique, but I feel like he rarely makes a record that particularly engages me.
  24. Did you ever hear his solo album on MPS? Recorded int the home of the guy with amazing Bosendorfer grand?
  25. You would probably like OP's MPS album "Motions and Emotions," as well as his Limelight album "Soul Espanol," a poorly-titled album of Brazilian tunes.
