This great Capitol LP starts out with purports to be musicians playing on acid. This album is an absolute gem.

I did not mean to imply this in my recent post. I was told, though, that the vinyl resurgence among youngish hipsters has further boosted business, as has been the case at a number of B&M stores I frequent. Correct me if I'm mistaken.

Brother Cleve reports that Stereo Jack's is doing better than ever, now that bearded 20-somethings are paying $10 for Simon and Garfunkel and other records that used to be in the dollar bin!

One thing if it's BYOB - I've been to plenty of venues like that.. It's another entirely if they don't permit drinks in the space. Funny that jazz is taking this approach while innovative "classical" programming is trying to tear down the wall of stuffiness by permitting drinking at concerts. At any rate, it's good to know which spaces to avoid when I'm in town.

Well of course, but you could also flip that statement and say that you can never read an article about Miles without it mentioning all of major, major artists that got their starts in his combos over the years. That is certainly an essential aspect of Miles' oeuvre that has propelled him to such legendary stature. For what it's worth, I have never thought of Herbie or any of those guys simply as Miles' sidemen, and I really haven't at all gotten that impression over the years. I realize that your experience may be different.

Seriously? I've never gotten that impression over the decades, either from print or conversations.

I love the idea that anyone would even entertain "selling out" as a remotely valid concept in 2014.

If so, this speaks to the flexibility and functionality of music, which is a good thing in my opinion. I love art on its own terms, but I also embrace the concept of functional art. That is why I have Eames chairs and a Saarinen pedestal table in my kitchen. While the leftist/singalong thing may be perceived as creepy or corny by some - including me, admittedly - I would love to live in a world in which music offered a form of cultural currency with some value. Music offered this back then, but it is virtually worthless now.

Does anyone have the Swedish Modern Jazz album on RCA Camden (US) from the late 50s or early 60s? Really nice cover art. I have to spin this record again.

Listening to the "In a Silent Way" box set recently, I wondered about the following: If Teo had edited the sessions into a double LP, and it was released as such with trippy cover art like Bitches Brew, do you think "In a Silent Way" would have made the mark that Bitches Brew made?

Yes, but Mercury was ahead of the curve, and many of their early stereo records sound amazing. Some do not.

Thanks for the replies. I wonder if the CD releases use the stereo or mono masters. I'm glad I have the mono version, based on Stereo Jack's post.

Most of these sessions were done in 1957. I know that Mercury was doing at least some stereo recording by this point. Were any of these Sarah Vaughan Gershwin sessions recorded in stereo? I have them only in mono.

Perhaps it is paradoxical to discuss a vacuum of recordings in the discography sub-forum. Are there any key recordings from this period from radio, V-discs, or jam sessions that help to document the development of bebop and fill gaps in the canon?

He is one of only a few artists whose LPs I will always buy when I stumble across them. RIP.
